Campaign Characters & Roles
In Call of Duty 2, you'll experience the brutal realities of World War II through the eyes of three distinct soldiers across three different Allied campaigns. Each character provides a unique perspective and set of challenges, requiring different tactical approaches.
Private Vasili Ivanovich Koslov (Red Army)
As Private Koslov, you'll be thrust into the desperate defense of Stalingrad and the subsequent Soviet counter-offensives. Your missions often involve urban warfare, close-quarters combat, and holding defensive lines against overwhelming odds.
- Key Missions:
- "The Winter War": Your first taste of combat. Follow Sergeant Volsky's orders closely. You'll primarily use the Mosin-Nagant rifle. Focus on conserving ammunition and utilizing cover behind destroyed vehicles and rubble. Look for opportunities to flank German machine gun nests.
- "Comrade Sniper": This mission highlights the importance of precision. After acquiring the Mosin-Nagant with scope from a fallen comrade near the central fountain, you'll be tasked with eliminating German officers and snipers. Position yourself on the upper floors of ruined buildings for clear sightlines. Remember to hold your breath (default 'Shift' key) for a steadier shot.
- "Downtown Assault": Expect intense street fighting. The PPSh-41 submachine gun is your best friend here for its high rate of fire in close quarters. Prioritize taking out enemies on rooftops and in windows before advancing. Utilize smoke grenades (default 'G' key) to cross open areas safely.
- Strategic Advice:
- Cover is King: Soviet missions often involve heavy enemy fire. Always move from cover to cover.
- Conserve Ammo: Mosin-Nagant rounds can be scarce. Make every shot count. Scavenge weapons from fallen enemies, especially the MP40 for close-range engagements.
- Follow Your Squad: Your AI teammates are generally effective at drawing fire and identifying enemy positions. Use them as a shield and support.
Sergeant John Davis (British Army)
Sergeant Davis's campaign takes you through the North African desert and into the heart of France. These missions often feature open-field engagements, tank battles, and coordinated assaults.
- Key Missions:
- "The Desert Rats": Your introduction to desert combat. You'll primarily use the Lee-Enfield rifle. Learn to use the binoculars (default 'B' key) to spot distant enemies and plan your approach. Watch for enemy snipers on elevated positions.
- "Tank Hunter": This mission requires you to destroy German Panzer tanks. You'll be equipped with sticky bombs (Gammon Bombs). Approach tanks from the rear or sides where their armor is weakest. Use smoke grenades to obscure your approach and retreat. Look for opportunities to commandeer a PzKpfw IV if available, though this is rare.
- "Operation Overlord": As part of the D-Day landings, you'll face heavily fortified German positions. The Sten submachine gun is excellent for clearing bunkers. Pay attention to your officer's commands for coordinated pushes and breaching enemy defenses.
- Strategic Advice:
- Utilize Terrain: The desert offers limited cover. Use sand dunes, rocks, and destroyed vehicles to your advantage.
- Anti-Tank Tactics: Always prioritize destroying enemy tanks. Gammon Bombs are powerful but require careful placement.
- Teamwork: British missions often emphasize coordinated squad movements. Stick with your squad and support their advances.
Corporal Bill Taylor (U.S. Army)
Corporal Taylor's journey begins with the D-Day landings and continues through the intense battles of the European theater. His missions are characterized by fierce infantry combat, house-to-house fighting, and objective-based assaults.
- Key Missions:
- "The Battle of Pointe du Hoc": A brutal beach assault. Immediately seek cover behind obstacles like the concrete barriers and craters. The M1 Garand is your primary weapon; its powerful shots are crucial for taking down enemies quickly. Prioritize throwing grenades (default '4' key) into enemy bunkers before advancing.
- "The Crossroads": This mission involves clearing a fortified crossroads. You'll encounter numerous German machine gun nests. Use the M1A1 Thompson submachine gun for close-quarters clearing of buildings. Look for opportunities to use mounted machine guns (MG42s) against enemy infantry.
- "The Bridge": A challenging mission to secure a vital bridge. Expect heavy resistance. The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) is invaluable for suppressing enemy positions and providing covering fire for your squad. Utilize cover provided by the bridge's structure and destroyed vehicles.
- Strategic Advice:
- Grenade Usage: American missions often provide ample grenades. Use them liberally to clear bunkers, flush out enemies from cover, and soften up fortified positions.
- Aggressive Play: While caution is always advised, American missions often reward a more aggressive, objective-focused approach. Push forward with your squad.
- Weapon Variety: Experiment with the M1 Garand, Thompson, and BAR. Each has its strengths for different combat scenarios.
