Exploration & Secrets
While Call of Duty 2 is primarily a linear, action-packed shooter, keen-eyed players and those willing to deviate slightly from the direct path can uncover valuable resources, strategic positions, and even some fun Easter eggs. Mastering exploration can give you an edge in combat, especially on higher difficulties, by providing extra grenades, better weapons, or flanking opportunities.
Weapon & Ammunition Caches
Throughout the campaigns, you'll often find hidden stashes of weapons and ammunition. These are crucial for maintaining your combat effectiveness, especially when your primary weapon runs low on ammo or you need a specific tool for an upcoming encounter.
- Stalingrad - Downtown (Soviet Campaign):
- PPSH-41 Cache: After clearing the initial street fighting and entering the first multi-story building, ascend to the second floor. Look for a partially barricaded room to your left. Inside, you'll find a crate containing a fresh PPSH-41 and several drum magazines. This is excellent for close-quarters combat in the subsequent building clearings.
- Grenade Stockpile: Before assaulting the final objective building (the one with the German flag), check the small, ruined shop on the right side of the street. Behind the counter, there are usually 2-3 additional Frag Grenades, invaluable for clearing entrenched enemies.
- El Alamein - The End of the Beginning (British Campaign):
- Lee-Enfield & Medkit: During the initial push across the open desert, stick to the left flank near the rocky outcrops. There's a small, overturned British supply truck. Beside it, you can often find a full-ammo Lee-Enfield rifle and a Medkit, which can be a lifesaver if you've taken heavy damage.
- Bren Gun Position: After securing the first German trench line, instead of immediately pushing forward, explore the deeper sections of the trench. In a small, dug-out alcove, you might discover a Bren Gun with a full magazine, offering superior suppressive fire for the next advance.
- Normandy - Pointe du Hoc (American Campaign):
- M1 Garand & Ammo: Upon reaching the top of the cliffs, before entering the first bunker, look for a small, collapsed trench section to your right. Often, a fully loaded M1 Garand and several clips will be lying next to a fallen comrade.
- Bazooka Rocket Stash: When clearing the second bunker complex, after disabling the first artillery gun, proceed cautiously. In a side room off the main corridor, usually marked by a broken wooden door, you can find 2-3 extra Bazooka rockets. Essential for dealing with the upcoming Panzer IV.
Strategic Vantage Points & Flanking Routes
Identifying and using alternative paths can often bypass heavily fortified enemy positions or provide superior firing angles, turning a difficult encounter into a manageable one.
- Toujane - The Battle of Toujane (British Campaign):
- Rooftop Sniper Nest: When advancing through the narrow streets towards the main plaza, look for buildings with accessible stairwells or ladders. One particular building on the left side, about halfway to the plaza, offers a climbable ladder to its rooftop. From here, you can pick off German machine gunners and riflemen in the plaza with relative ease, significantly softening the objective.
- Alleyway Bypass: Before the final push to secure the town hall, a small, debris-filled alleyway often runs parallel to the main street on the right. This path, while sometimes containing a few enemies, can allow you to flank the entrenched Germans guarding the town hall entrance, catching them by surprise.
- Bergstein - The Crossroads (American Campaign):
- Barn Loft Position: During the defense of the crossroads, the large barn on the left side of the road (when facing the German advance) has an accessible loft. Climb the ladder inside. This elevated position provides excellent cover and a wide field of fire over the main road, making it ideal for picking off approaching infantry and even damaging light vehicles with well-placed rifle shots.
- Flanking Trench: As you move towards the final objective of clearing the German positions beyond the crossroads, a shallow, overgrown trench often runs along the right side of the field. This trench offers good concealment and allows you to approach the enemy's flank, avoiding direct engagement with their front-facing machine gun nests.
Easter Eggs & Environmental Details
While not directly impacting gameplay, these hidden gems add to the game's atmosphere and reward thorough exploration.
- Soviet Campaign - Moscow Outskirts:
- "Potato" Grenade: In the very first mission, during the training sequence, if you carefully observe the snow-covered fields, you might spot a single, unusually large potato lying in the snow near a destroyed fence post. This is a subtle nod to the harsh conditions and limited resources of the Soviet front.
- British Campaign - Matmata:
- Hidden Well: In one of the cave systems, after a particularly intense firefight, look for a small, almost hidden alcove off the main path. Inside, you'll find a surprisingly intact ancient well, complete with a bucket and rope. While you can't interact with it, it's a neat piece of environmental storytelling.
- American Campaign - Carentan:
- "Kilroy Was Here" Graffiti: Keep an eye on the walls of ruined buildings and bunkers. In several locations, particularly on the second floor of a partially destroyed building near the town square, you can find the iconic "Kilroy Was Here" graffiti scribbled on the plaster. A classic WWII soldier's tag.
