Cover & Movement Tactics
Mastering cover and movement is paramount to survival and success in Call of Duty 3, especially on higher difficulties. Blindly rushing into firefights will quickly lead to your demise. This section will equip you with the knowledge to effectively use the environment and your own mobility to outmaneuver and eliminate the enemy.
Understanding Cover Types
Not all cover is created equal. Recognizing the different types and their effectiveness is crucial:
- Hard Cover: These are solid, impenetrable objects like concrete barriers, stone walls, and overturned vehicles. They offer complete protection from incoming fire. Always prioritize hard cover during intense engagements.
- Soft Cover: Less durable options such as wooden crates, thin metal sheets, or even some furniture. While they can block initial shots, sustained fire will often penetrate or destroy them, leaving you exposed. Use soft cover for temporary protection or when hard cover is unavailable.
- Environmental Cover: Natural elements like dense foliage, bushes, or even shadows can break enemy line of sight, making you harder to target. While not offering ballistic protection, they are excellent for stealth and flanking maneuvers.
Effective Movement Techniques
Your movement should be deliberate and tactical, not frantic. Consider these techniques:
- Sprinting (Hold L3/Left Stick): Use sprinting to quickly move between cover points or to close the distance on unsuspecting enemies. However, avoid sprinting in open areas where you are vulnerable. Remember, sprinting makes your footsteps louder, potentially alerting nearby enemies.
- Crouching (Press L3/Left Stick): Crouching reduces your profile, making you a smaller target and improving accuracy. It's ideal for moving cautiously through dangerous areas or when peeking around corners.
- Prone (Hold L3/Left Stick while crouched): Going prone offers the lowest profile, making you extremely difficult to hit. It's excellent for ambushes, long-range engagements, or when under heavy fire in an open area. Be aware that your movement speed is severely limited while prone.
- Peeking & Leaning: While not a dedicated mechanic in Call of Duty 3, you can effectively "peek" by positioning yourself at the edge of cover and only exposing a small portion of your body to return fire. This minimizes your vulnerability.
Strategic Cover Utilization
Applying cover effectively requires foresight and awareness:
- Advance Methodically: Never rush into an unknown area. Always move from one piece of cover to the next, assessing the situation before exposing yourself.
- Flanking Maneuvers: Use cover to your advantage to outflank entrenched enemies. For example, in the "Black Tuesday" mission, when clearing the streets of New York, use the numerous abandoned vehicles and rubble piles to move around enemy positions and attack from the side or rear.
- Suppressing Fire & Relocation: If you're pinned down, lay down suppressing fire with your primary weapon (e.g., an M1 Garand or Thompson) to keep enemies' heads down, then quickly relocate to a more advantageous cover position.
- Grenade Usage: When enemies are dug in behind hard cover, use your Frag Grenades to flush them out. Cook grenades briefly before throwing to ensure they detonate quickly, denying enemies time to react.
- Observational Periods: Before engaging, take a moment behind cover to observe enemy patrol patterns, potential choke points, and the types of weapons they are carrying. This information will inform your attack plan.
- Environmental Awareness: Look for explosive barrels or weak structures that can be destroyed to eliminate enemies or create new pathways. For instance, during the "Mind the Gap" mission, shooting the propane tanks near enemy positions can clear out multiple hostiles simultaneously.
By integrating these cover and movement tactics into your gameplay, you'll significantly improve your survivability and effectiveness across all missions, from the chaotic urban warfare of "Black Tuesday" to the intense close-quarters combat of "Goalpost."
