Campaign Difficulty Specifics
Welcome, soldier! This section of the guide is dedicated to helping you conquer the Call of Duty 3 campaign, especially on the more challenging difficulties like Veteran. While the core objectives remain consistent across all settings, the enemy AI, damage output, and your own resilience change drastically. Forget what you know from Regular; Veteran demands precision, tactical thinking, and a deep understanding of each mission's flow. We'll focus on actionable strategies, key item locations, and how to leverage your environment to survive.
General Veteran Strategies
- Cover is King: On Veteran, exposure is a death sentence. Always move from cover to cover. Peeking out for even a second too long can result in instant incapacitation. Utilize low walls, overturned vehicles, and building interiors religiously.
- Prioritize Targets: Heavily armed enemies (MG42 gunners, enemies with Panzerfausts) and those in advantageous positions (snipers on rooftops) should be your first priority. Eliminate threats that can suppress you or deal high burst damage immediately.
- Headshots are Essential: Body shots often aren't enough, especially against later-game German forces. Aim for the head to conserve ammunition and take down enemies efficiently.
- Grenade Management: German soldiers are fond of grenades. When you hear the distinct "clink" or see the grenade indicator, react immediately. Either sprint away from the blast radius or, if possible, throw it back. Conversely, use your own grenades to flush out entrenched enemies or clear rooms before entry.
- Weapon Familiarity: Understand the strengths and weaknesses of each weapon. The M1 Garand is excellent for medium-to-long range precision, while the Thompson is a close-quarters beast. The BAR offers good suppressive fire. Always carry a primary weapon suited for the immediate engagement and a reliable secondary (like the M1911) for emergencies.
- Patience and Observation: Don't rush. Observe enemy patrol patterns, identify choke points, and plan your approach. Sometimes waiting for your AI teammates to draw fire can be a viable tactic.
Mission-Specific Tips (Example: Saint-Lô)
Let's take the "Saint-Lô" mission as a prime example of how difficulty impacts gameplay. On Veteran, the initial street fighting is brutal.
Objective: Clear the Street
- Initial Push: As you advance down the main street, immediately take cover behind the overturned truck on your left. German soldiers will be positioned in the windows of the building directly ahead and behind sandbags to the right.
- Eliminate Window Threats: Use your M1 Garand to pick off the enemies in the windows. These are high-priority targets as they have clear lines of sight.
- Flank Right: Once the immediate window threats are down, move cautiously to the right, utilizing the destroyed vehicles as cover. There's often a German soldier with an MP40 behind the sandbags near the alleyway. A well-placed frag grenade (Frag Grenade, found in your inventory from the start) can clear this position.
- Building Entry: After clearing the street, your objective will be to enter the building on the left. Before breaching, throw a second Frag Grenade into the doorway or through a broken window to soften up any resistance inside.
Objective: Secure the Upper Floor
- Stairwell Ambush: As you ascend the stairs, expect an enemy waiting at the top. Pre-aim your weapon (e.g., Thompson for close quarters) and be ready to fire as soon as you see them.
- Room Clearing: The upper floor has multiple rooms. Use the "slice the pie" technique when entering doorways – peek around the corner slowly to identify threats before fully exposing yourself. Look for weapon caches; you can often find a fresh MP40 or Kar98k with ammunition in these rooms, useful for varying your loadout.
- MG42 Nest: A critical threat on the upper floor is an MG42 nest overlooking the street. This is usually located in the largest room with multiple windows. Do NOT engage this head-on. Look for a side entrance or a window from an adjacent room that offers a clear shot at the gunner's head. Alternatively, a well-aimed Frag Grenade can dislodge them.
Remember, every mission on Veteran will present similar challenges. Adapt these strategies, learn the enemy spawn points, and you'll be well on your way to completing the Call of Duty 3 campaign on its toughest setting.
