Environmental Hazards & Opportunities
In Call of Duty 3, the battlefields of World War II are not just backdrops; they are dynamic elements that can either hinder your progress or provide crucial tactical advantages. Mastering the environment is key to surviving on Veteran difficulty. This section will detail common environmental hazards to avoid and opportunities to exploit.
Explosive Barrels & Vehicles
Throughout various missions, you'll encounter red explosive barrels and derelict vehicles (cars, trucks, even some half-tracks) that can be detonated. These are double-edged swords:
- Hazard: Standing too close when an enemy bullet or your own stray shot hits them will result in instant death or severe damage. Always maintain a safe distance, especially during intense firefights.
- Opportunity: Use these to your advantage. A well-placed shot from your M1 Garand or Thompson SMG can trigger a chain reaction, eliminating multiple clustered enemies. In missions like The Crossroads, when advancing through the village, look for barrels near enemy machine gun nests. Detonating them can clear the path and suppress enemy fire, allowing your squad to push forward.
- Strategy: Prioritize enemies near these explosives. For instance, during the defense of the church in The Black Baron, if German soldiers are swarming the entrance, a shot to a nearby fuel drum can thin their ranks significantly.
Destructible Cover
Many seemingly solid objects in the environment are actually destructible, offering both risk and reward.
- Wooden Fences & Crates: These provide minimal cover and will quickly splinter under sustained enemy fire. Relying on them for too long is a recipe for disaster. In Foy, when crossing open fields, use stone walls or larger debris for cover, not the flimsy wooden fences.
- Thin Walls & Doors: In urban combat scenarios, such as the streets of Saint-Lô, enemies can shoot through thin wooden doors and some plaster walls. Assume that if you can see a shadow or hear movement, they can shoot you.
- Opportunity: Conversely, you can also shoot through these materials. If you know an enemy is behind a wooden door, a burst from your BAR can often eliminate them without exposing yourself. This is particularly useful in tight indoor engagements.
Water & Deep Mud
While not directly damaging, these elements significantly impact movement and visibility.
- Deep Mud: Missions like The Island often feature areas with deep mud, especially around riverbanks. Moving through these areas will drastically slow your character, making you an easy target. Avoid open mud patches if possible. If you must cross, sprint through quickly or use it as a last resort for cover if you can prone.
- Water: Shallow water is generally safe, but deep water can be a hazard. Falling into deep water in certain areas will result in drowning and mission failure. Always stick to designated paths or bridges. In The Crossing, when navigating the river, ensure you stay with your squad and don't stray into deeper currents.
Elevation & Vantage Points
using the verticality of the environment can turn the tide of a battle.
- High Ground: Always seek the high ground. It provides a superior firing position, better visibility of enemy movements, and often makes you harder to hit. In The Flank, when assaulting enemy positions, look for hills or ruined buildings to gain an advantage. A sniper rifle like the Springfield is devastating from a good vantage point.
- Rooftops & Second Stories: In urban maps, ascending to a second story or a rooftop can provide excellent opportunities to flank enemies or clear streets below. Be wary of enemy snipers or soldiers who may also be using these positions. Before entering a building, always check for stairwells or ladders that lead to higher floors.
- Trenches & Ditches: While low ground, trenches offer excellent protection from direct fire and allow for stealthy movement. Use them to advance unseen or to regroup under heavy fire. In The Crossroads, the network of trenches around the objective can be used to outmaneuver German forces.
Environmental Obstacles & Chokepoints
Understanding the flow of the map and identifying natural chokepoints is crucial for both offense and defense.
- Narrow Passages & Doorways: These are prime locations for ambushes. Always approach them cautiously, using grenades (Mk 2 Fragmentation Grenade) to clear rooms before entering. On defense, these are perfect spots to set up an MG42 or a well-placed BAR to mow down advancing enemies.
- Barricades & Rubble: These can block direct paths, forcing you into alternative routes. Pay attention to your compass for objective markers, but also look for less obvious paths that might offer a tactical advantage, such as a flank route around a heavily defended barricade. In The Forest, fallen trees and dense undergrowth create natural chokepoints that can be used to funnel enemies.
