Mission 3: The Black Baron
Welcome to "The Black Baron," a mission that will test your tactical prowess and patience. This guide focuses on navigating the challenges, especially on Veteran difficulty, by providing actionable steps and strategic insights. Remember, adaptability is key; if one approach isn't working, try another!
Initial Advance and Flanking
The mission begins with an immediate push. Your primary objective is to clear the initial German resistance and secure the area. Expect heavy fire from multiple directions.
- Starting Position: You'll start near a ruined building. Immediately take cover behind the low wall to your front.
- First Engagement: Two German soldiers will be directly ahead, often peeking from behind a destroyed vehicle. Eliminate them quickly with your M1 Garand.
- Flanking Left: Your squad will likely suggest moving left. Follow this path carefully. There's a small alleyway between two buildings. Use this for cover.
- Grenade Opportunity: As you advance through the alley, a group of 3-4 Germans will emerge from a doorway on your right. Toss a Mk 2 Fragmentation Grenade into their position to thin their numbers before engaging with your rifle.
- Checkpoint (CP): After clearing this initial cluster, you should hit your first checkpoint. Take a moment to reload and assess your surroundings.
Securing the Courtyard
The next major engagement takes place in a small, debris-strewn courtyard. This area is often heavily defended with multiple enemy positions.
- Entry Point: You'll enter the courtyard from the north. Immediately look for cover behind the overturned cart or the rubble pile to your left.
- Machine Gun Nest: There's often a German MG42 position in the building directly across the courtyard, providing suppressive fire. Prioritize eliminating this threat. A well-placed Mk 2 Fragmentation Grenade can often flush out or eliminate the gunner.
- Flanking Right (Recommended): Instead of a direct assault, consider flanking right. There's a damaged wall section that offers a path around the main enemy concentration. This path often leads to a staircase or a broken window into the building where the MG42 was located.
- Inside the Building: Once inside, clear any remaining German soldiers. Be wary of enemies hiding behind crates or furniture. You might find additional M1 Garand ammo or a Thompson SMG on fallen enemies here.
- Second Checkpoint (CP): Clearing the courtyard and the adjacent building will trigger another checkpoint.
The Street Push and Sniper Threat
Exiting the courtyard, you'll find yourself on a street with more German resistance, including a dangerous sniper.
- Street Engagement: Germans will be positioned behind cars and debris along the street. Use your squad's fire to draw attention while you advance from cover to cover.
- Sniper Location: A German sniper is typically positioned in the second-story window of the building at the far end of the street, often marked by a glint from their scope. They use a Kar98k Sniper Rifle and can be deadly.
- Counter-Sniper Strategy:
- Option A (Aggressive): If you have a Springfield '03 Sniper Rifle (sometimes found on fallen allies or specific weapon caches), use it to directly engage the sniper.
- Option B (Flanking): Advance cautiously along the left side of the street, using the buildings for cover. There's often a side alley or a breachable wall that allows you to enter the building directly below the sniper's position. Clear the ground floor, then move upstairs to eliminate the sniper.
- Ammo Cache: After eliminating the sniper and clearing the street, check the sniper's nest. You might find a small ammo cache with Kar98k rounds and potentially a Springfield '03 Sniper Rifle if you don't already have one.
- Final Checkpoint (CP): Securing the street and neutralizing the sniper will mark the end of this section and grant you a checkpoint. Prepare for the final assault on the "Black Baron's" stronghold.
