Mission 2: The Island
In "The Island," you transition to the American perspective as Private Nichols of the 29th Infantry Division. Set in the flooded marshes and dense brush near the town of Saint-Lô, this mission shifts the pace from the urban ruins of Saint-Lô to a grueling amphibious and woodland assault. Your primary goal is to cross the river and clear out German fortified positions to secure a foothold for the Allied advance.
Primary Objectives
- Reach the River: Navigate through the woods while fending off German patrols. Watch for enemies hiding behind fallen logs and thick foliage.
- Cross the River: Board the assault boat. You will be vulnerable to MG42 fire; stay low and wait for the boat to dock before engaging.
- Clear the Bunkers: Use smoke grenades to obscure the vision of the MG42 nests. Flank the bunkers to the right to clear them out with fragmentation grenades and close-quarters fire.
- Secure the Outpost: Fight through the ruins of a small stone farmhouse at the top of the hill to eliminate the final German resistance.
Enemy Encounters & Strategy
The German forces here use MG42 machine gun nests and Gewehr 43 rifles, making open-field movement suicidal. You will face heavy resistance near the riverbank where entrenched Wehrmacht soldiers have high-ground advantage. Use your smoke grenades—they are vital for surviving the initial beach landing.
Expert Tip: When moving through the wooded areas, keep your ears open for the sound of "potato masher" grenades hitting the ground. The dense brush often hides the visual indicator until it's too late. Always look for the flanking path; the central road is a bottleneck designed to trap your squad in a crossfire.
While the flooded marshes of The Island prioritize slow-paced, linear tactical movement, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III emphasizes verticality and player agency through its Open Combat Missions.
