Economy & Vendors
While Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (RPG) isn't a traditional open-world RPG with a sprawling economy, understanding the flow of resources and the limited vendor interactions is crucial for optimizing your loadouts and ensuring mission success. Unlike games with dedicated shops on every corner, CoD4's "economy" is more about strategic acquisition and efficient use of what's available, supplemented by specific vendor opportunities.
Currency: Supply Points (SP)
Your primary form of currency in CoD4 RPG is Supply Points (SP). These are earned through various in-game actions:
- Mission Completion: Successfully finishing main story missions and side objectives awards a significant amount of SP. Higher difficulty settings often yield bonus SP.
- Enemy Elimination: Each enemy killed contributes a small amount of SP. Headshots and multi-kills can provide slight bonuses.
- Intel Collection: Locating and securing Intel Laptops throughout missions often grants a substantial SP bonus upon mission completion. Prioritize these!
- Challenge Completion: Fulfilling specific in-game challenges (e.g., "50 Headshots with an AK-47," "Complete a mission without taking damage") often unlocks SP rewards.
SP is automatically added to your total and can be viewed in your Loadout Menu or Mission Briefing screen.
Vendor Types & Locations
Unlike a traditional RPG, dedicated "shops" are rare. Instead, vendor interactions are contextual and often tied to specific mission hubs or safe houses.
1. Quartermaster (Mission Hubs)
The primary vendor you'll encounter is the Quartermaster. These individuals are typically found at your main operational bases between missions. Their inventory is limited but crucial.
- Location:
- Act I - Training Camp, Hereford, UK: After completing the "F.N.G." training, the Quartermaster is accessible in the armory tent.
- Act II - Safe House, Middle East: Following missions like "Crew Expendable" and "Blackout," you'll return to a safe house where a Quartermaster is present.
- Act III - Forward Operating Base (FOB), Russia: During the later stages, particularly before missions like "All Ghillied Up" and "One Shot, One Kill," a Quartermaster will be available at the FOB.
- Inventory & Services:
- Weapon Procurement: Purchase new primary and secondary weapons. Initial offerings are basic (e.g., AK-47, M4 Carbine, USP .45), but more advanced weapons (e.g., M16A4, MP5, M21 Sniper Rifle) become available as you progress through the story.
- Attachment Acquisition: Buy attachments like Red Dot Sights, ACOG Scopes, Silencers, and Grenade Launchers. These significantly impact weapon performance.
- Equipment Resupply: Replenish grenades (Frag, Smoke, Flashbang) and C4. This is essential before difficult missions.
- Armor Upgrades: Purchase light armor plating or tactical vests that increase your damage resistance. These are often expensive but worth the investment for harder difficulties.
- Ammunition: While most ammo is scavenged, the Quartermaster can top up specific, rarer ammunition types (e.g., .50 Cal for the Barret .50cal).
- Strategy: Always check the Quartermaster's inventory before a mission. Prioritize attachments that complement your playstyle. A Silencer for stealth missions or an ACOG for long-range engagements can be game-changers. Don't overspend on weapons you won't use; focus on upgrading your preferred loadout.
2. Field Caches (In-Mission)
While not traditional vendors, Field Caches act as crucial supply points during active missions. These are often marked on your HUD or indicated by a distinctive green crate.
- Location: Scattered throughout various missions, often before major engagements or after clearing a significant area. Examples include:
- The armory room on the cargo ship in "Crew Expendable."
- Supply crates found in the village during "Charlie Don't Surf."
- Weapon stashes in the Chernobyl exclusion zone during "All Ghillied Up."
- Inventory & Services:
- Ammunition Resupply: The primary function. Interact to fully replenish ammo for your current weapons.
- Weapon Swaps: Occasionally, Field Caches will contain specific, powerful weapons (e.g., a Javelin launcher, a scoped M40A3) that you can swap for your current primary. These are often mission-specific.
- Grenade & Equipment Replenishment: Sometimes offer a limited resupply of grenades or C4.
- Strategy: Always use Field Caches when you find them, even if your ammo isn't critically low. You never know when the next opportunity will arise. Be mindful of swapping weapons; sometimes the mission-specific weapon is vital for an upcoming objective.
Selling Items & Scavenging
CoD4 RPG does not feature a "selling" mechanic for weapons or equipment. Once acquired, items are either used or discarded. However, scavenging is a vital part of the economy:
- Enemy Weapons: Picking up weapons from fallen enemies is your primary source of ammunition during missions. Always check enemy drops for ammo for your current weapon or a suitable replacement if you're running low.
- Grenade Pick-ups: Enemies occasionally drop grenades. These are free resupplies and should always be picked up.
- Intel Laptops: As mentioned, collecting these provides SP. They are the closest thing to a "valuable item" you can find and exchange for currency.
Optimizing Your Spending
Given the limited SP and vendor interactions, smart spending is paramount:
- Prioritize Attachments: A well-equipped base weapon is often more effective than a new, unmodded weapon. A Red Dot Sight on an AK-47 can be more impactful than buying an M4 without any attachments.
- Invest in Armor: For harder difficulties, the increased survivability from armor upgrades can save you numerous restarts.
- Strategic Weapon Purchases: Don't buy every weapon. Identify your preferred playstyle (e.g., assault, stealth, sniping) and invest in weapons and attachments that support it. The M16A4 with an ACOG for long-range precision or an MP5 with a Silencer for close-quarters stealth are excellent examples.
- Save for Key Upgrades: Some of the best attachments (e.g., Thermal Scope, Grenade Launcher) are expensive. Save your SP for these impactful purchases.
- use Scavenging: Rely on scavenging for ammunition during missions to save your SP for more permanent upgrades.
By understanding these economic principles and vendor interactions, you'll be better equipped to tackle the challenges of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (RPG) and ensure your loadout is always optimized for the mission ahead.
