Multiplayer Modes Explained
Welcome, recruit! The multiplayer battlegrounds of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare are where legends are forged. Understanding the distinct objectives and strategies for each game mode is paramount to your success. This guide will break down the core multiplayer experiences, offering actionable advice to dominate the competition.
Team Deathmatch (TDM)
The quintessential Call of Duty experience. Two teams clash in a race to achieve a set number of kills. The team that reaches the kill limit first, or has the most kills when the timer expires, wins.
- Objective: Accumulate the most team kills.
- Strategy:
- Stick Together: While lone wolf tactics can sometimes pay off, a coordinated push with teammates often yields better results. Move in pairs or small groups to cover flanks and revive fallen comrades (though direct revives aren't a mechanic, mutual support is key).
- Map Awareness: Learn common enemy routes and power positions. On maps like Crash, controlling the central market area and its rooftops can provide excellent sightlines. On Crossfire, the main street is a killzone; utilize the flanking alleys and buildings.
- Killstreaks: Focus on staying alive to earn your killstreaks. A well-placed UAV can turn the tide, revealing enemy positions. A Airstrike can clear out entrenched enemies, and a Helicopter can rack up kills quickly if protected.
- Weapon Choice: Assault Rifles (e.g., M16A4, AK-47) and SMGs (e.g., MP5, AK-74u) are generally excellent choices for their versatility in most engagements. Consider a shotgun (e.g., W1200) for close-quarters maps like Shipment.
Free-For-All (FFA)
Every soldier for themselves! In FFA, you're pitted against all other players with the sole objective of getting the most kills. The first player to reach the kill limit or have the most kills when time runs out wins.
- Objective: Be the individual with the most kills.
- Strategy:
- Situational Awareness: Always be aware of your surroundings. Enemies can come from any direction. Use your mini-map religiously, especially when a UAV is active.
- Flanking Routes: Avoid direct confrontations in open areas. Utilize the intricate map design to flank opponents. On Backlot, the alleyways and interior buildings are your best friends.
- Sound Cues: Listen for footsteps, reloads, and enemy callouts. A good headset can give you a significant advantage.
- Perks: Consider perks like Sleight of Hand for faster reloads in intense firefights, Stopping Power for increased damage, and Dead Silence to mask your footsteps, making you harder to detect.
Domination
Domination is a strategic game mode where two teams fight to capture and hold three designated flag points (A, B, and C) across the map. Points are earned over time for each flag your team controls. The first team to reach the score limit wins.
- Objective: Capture and hold flag points to accumulate score.
- Strategy:
- Control B: Flag B is almost always the most contested and central flag. Controlling it provides a significant score advantage. Prioritize capturing and defending B.
- Two Flags are Key: Aim to hold at least two flags at all times. Holding all three can sometimes lead to enemies spawning closer to your controlled flags, making defense harder.
- Spawn Trapping (Advanced): If your team controls two flags and pushes the enemy back to their spawn, you can effectively "spawn trap" them, making it difficult for them to break out. This requires strong team coordination.
- Smoke Grenades: Use Smoke Grenades to obscure enemy sightlines when capturing an exposed flag, like Flag B on Bog.
- Defensive Positions: Once a flag is captured, establish defensive positions around it. On Strike, the buildings overlooking Flag B are crucial for defense.
Search & Destroy (S&D)
A high-stakes, round-based mode with no respawns. One team (Attackers) must plant and detonate a bomb at one of two designated sites, or eliminate all defenders. The other team (Defenders) must prevent the bomb from being planted, defuse a planted bomb, or eliminate all attackers. Each player only has one life per round.
- Objective: Attackers: Plant and detonate the bomb, or eliminate all defenders. Defenders: Prevent bomb plant/defuse, or eliminate all attackers.
- Strategy:
- Communication is Vital: Call out enemy positions, bomb plant status, and defuse attempts.
- Attackers:
- Rush or Slow Play: Decide as a team whether to rush a bomb site or play a slower, more tactical approach, picking off defenders.
- Bomb Carrier Protection: You carrying the C4 (bomb) needs protection. Don't let them get isolated.
- Post-Plant Defense: Once the bomb is planted, set up defensive positions around it to prevent the defuse. Use Claymores or C4 near the bomb for traps.
- Defenders:
- Site Coverage: Ensure both bomb sites are adequately covered. Don't leave one completely open.
- Listen for Plant: The distinct sound of the bomb being planted is a critical cue.
- Defuse Under Pressure: If the bomb is planted, prioritize defusing it. Sometimes, sacrificing yourself to get the defuse is worth it.
- Perks: Extreme Conditioning can help you get to bomb sites faster, and Steady Aim can be useful for quick close-quarters engagements around bomb sites.
Headquarters (HQ)
Teams compete to capture and hold a rotating "Headquarters" location. Once captured, the capturing team earns points for as long as they hold the HQ. The defending team cannot respawn while holding the HQ. The opposing team must destroy the HQ to stop the point accumulation and allow their teammates to respawn. The first team to reach the score limit wins.
- Objective: Capture and hold the Headquarters for points, or destroy the enemy HQ.
- Strategy:
- Capture and Defend: When the HQ spawns, rush to capture it. Once captured, establish a strong defensive perimeter. On District, the central market area often hosts HQs, requiring control of surrounding buildings.
- No Respawn Rule: Remember that the team holding the HQ does not respawn. This means every life is critical during defense. Play cautiously.
- Destroy the HQ: If the enemy has captured the HQ, your primary goal is to destroy it. Coordinate pushes to overwhelm their defenses.
- Next HQ Spawn: Pay attention to the timer for the next HQ spawn. Position your team strategically to be the first to capture it.
- Explosives: Frag Grenades and C4 are excellent for clearing out entrenched enemies defending an HQ.
Sabotage
Two teams battle over a single bomb. The objective is to plant the bomb at the enemy's designated bomb site and detonate it, or to prevent the enemy from doing the same. Unlike S&D, players respawn in Sabotage.
- Objective: Plant and detonate the bomb at the enemy's site, or prevent the enemy from doing so.
- Strategy:
- Bomb Carrier Protection: The bomb carrier is a high-value target. Protect them at all costs.
- Escort the Bomb: Move as a unit with the bomb carrier, clearing the path and defending against enemy attacks.
- Defensive Planting: Once the bomb is planted, switch to a defensive mindset. Guard the bomb and eliminate anyone attempting to defuse.
- Aggressive Defense (No Bomb): If the enemy has the bomb, aggressively push to eliminate the carrier and retrieve the bomb.
- Perks: Juggernaut can be useful for the bomb carrier to absorb more damage, while Extreme Conditioning helps with faster bomb runs.
Mastering these modes requires practice, map knowledge, and effective teamwork. Experiment with different weapon loadouts and perk combinations to find what suits your playstyle best for each scenario. Good luck, soldier!
