Campaign Challenges & Medals
Beyond simply completing the campaign missions, Black Ops II offers a robust system of challenges and medals designed to test your tactical prowess and reward exceptional performance. Mastering these challenges not only grants you bragging rights but also unlocks valuable XP and sometimes even unique customization options for your multiplayer profile. This section will guide you through the intricacies of these objectives, providing actionable strategies to help you earn every medal.
Understanding Campaign Challenges
Each campaign mission features a set of specific challenges, often tied to unique gameplay mechanics, weapon proficiency, or environmental interactions. These are distinct from the main mission objectives and require a keen eye and strategic planning to complete. Successfully finishing all challenges within a mission is crucial for achieving 100% completion and unlocking the coveted "Platinum" medal for that mission.
Challenge Tracking & Rewards
- In-Mission HUD: Keep an eye on the top-left corner of your screen during gameplay; completed challenges will often pop up with a notification.
- Mission Select Screen: After completing a mission, you can review your challenge progress and see which ones you missed.
- XP Boosts: Completing challenges consistently awards bonus experience points, accelerating your progression.
- Calling Cards & Emblems: Certain cumulative challenge completions or specific difficult challenges can unlock exclusive cosmetic items for your online profile.
Strategies for Earning Medals
Medals are awarded for achieving specific feats during a mission, ranging from high kill counts with certain weapons to flawless execution of objectives. While some medals are automatically earned through natural gameplay, others require deliberate effort.
General Medal-Earning Tips
- Difficulty Matters: While most challenges can be completed on any difficulty, some medals might be easier to achieve on lower settings (e.g., "Untouchable" for taking no damage) or require the precision afforded by higher difficulties (e.g., headshot streaks).
- Weapon Familiarity: Many medals are tied to specific weapon types. Practice with assault rifles, SMGs, shotguns, and sniper rifles to maximize your effectiveness.
- Environmental Awareness: Utilize explosive barrels, cover, and tactical positions to your advantage. Some challenges specifically require environmental kills.
- Replay Missions: Don't be afraid to replay missions multiple times. Focus on one or two challenges per run until you master them.
- Consult the After-Action Report: After each mission, review the detailed breakdown of your performance. This will highlight areas for improvement and show you which medals you're close to earning.
Specific Medal Examples & Walkthroughs
"Pyrrhic Victory" (Mission: Old Wounds)
This medal requires you to destroy all enemy vehicles during the final escape sequence. It's easy to miss one in the chaos.
- Weapon Choice: Ensure you have a launcher equipped, such as the SMAW or RPG-7. You'll find ample ammo drops throughout the escape.
- Initial Push: As you drive through the village, prioritize the armored personnel carriers (APCs) and jeeps. Aim for the engine blocks or exposed turrets for quicker destruction.
- Chokepoint Strategy: When you reach the narrow canyon section, several vehicles will converge. Use your launcher on the lead vehicles to create bottlenecks.
- Final Stand: During the last stand before the extraction point, multiple jeeps will attempt to flank you. Position yourself behind cover and systematically take them out. Don't rush to the extraction until you've confirmed all vehicles are destroyed. Listen for the distinct explosion sound for confirmation.
"Clean Sweep" (Mission: Celerium)
Earn this medal by eliminating all hostiles in the Celerium facility without being detected by the automated turrets.
- Stealth is Key: Equip a suppressed weapon, preferably an SMG like the MP7 or an assault rifle with a suppressor.
- Turret Locations: The turrets are typically positioned in elevated areas or at key intersections. Their laser sights are a dead giveaway.
- Approach & Disable: In the initial areas, use cover and take out enemies silently. When you encounter a turret, you have two options:
- Hack: If you have the Optical Camo and EMP Grenades, you can often sneak close enough to hack them, turning them to your side or disabling them permanently.
- Destroy: If hacking isn't an option, use a precise shot with a powerful weapon (e.g., a sniper rifle or a few well-placed assault rifle rounds) to destroy the turret's main sensor. Do this quickly to avoid triggering an alarm.
- Patience: Do not rush. Observe enemy patrol patterns and turret fields of view before making your move. A single detection by a turret will void the medal.
"Untouchable" (Mission: Karma)
Complete the entire mission without taking any damage. This is one of the most challenging medals and requires near-perfect execution.
- Difficulty Setting: Consider attempting this on Recruit or Regular difficulty first to learn enemy placements and attack patterns.
- Cover System Mastery: Utilize every piece of cover available. Never expose yourself unnecessarily.
- Headshots & Quick Kills: The faster you eliminate threats, the less chance they have to return fire. Prioritize headshots for maximum damage.
- Grenade Awareness: Listen for grenade audio cues and immediately move to avoid their blast radius.
- Tactical Retreats: If you find yourself overwhelmed, don't be afraid to fall back to a safer position to regroup.
- EMP & Flashbangs: Use tactical grenades to disorient enemies and create openings without exposing yourself to fire.
- Checkpoints: If you take damage, immediately restart from the last checkpoint. This is crucial for maintaining a flawless run.
