Cyber Core Abilities
Cyber Core Abilities are your primary tools for battlefield manipulation and enemy neutralization in Black Ops III's campaign. These powerful enhancements are categorized into three distinct trees: Control, Chaos, and Martial. Each tree offers unique tactical advantages, allowing you to tailor your playstyle to specific mission objectives or personal preferences. Mastering these abilities is crucial for navigating the complex and often overwhelming combat scenarios you'll face.
Unlocking Cyber Cores
Cyber Cores are unlocked progressively throughout the campaign. While some are granted automatically as part of the story, many require you to locate and interact with Cyber Core Stations. These stations are typically found in secure areas, often requiring you to clear out enemy resistance first. Keep an eye out for glowing blue terminals – that's your cue!
Initial Unlocks: Mission 2 - New World
Your first significant Cyber Core unlocks occur during the mission "New World." After the initial combat encounters and navigating through the burning streets, you'll reach a safe house. Inside, you'll be introduced to the Cyber Core system and gain access to your first set of abilities:
- Control Core:
- Remote Hijack: This ability is invaluable for disabling enemy turrets and robots, turning them against their former allies. During "New World," practice this on the numerous Drones and ASPs you encounter. Look for opportunities to hijack a turret overlooking a chokepoint to clear out waves of infantry.
- Protocol Override: A more advanced version of Remote Hijack, allowing for more complex control.
- Chaos Core:
- Adaptive Invisibility: Essential for stealth approaches and repositioning under heavy fire. In "New World," use this to bypass patrols or get behind entrenched enemies for a flank.
- Firefly Swarm: Deploys a swarm of incendiary drones to disorient and damage enemies. Great for clearing out groups in tight corridors.
- Martial Core:
- Overdrive: Temporarily enhances your movement speed and reaction time. Crucial for escaping sticky situations or rushing objectives.
- Unstoppable Force: A powerful melee attack that can clear out multiple enemies.
Further Unlocks: Mission 3 - Sand Castle
The mission "Sand Castle" offers more opportunities to expand your Cyber Core arsenal. Pay close attention to the side paths and less obvious routes, as these often lead to Cyber Core Stations.
- Locating the First Station: After the initial assault on the train station and clearing the main plaza, you'll move into a building with multiple levels. Look for a side room off the main path on the second floor. This station often unlocks advanced abilities for your chosen core.
- Second Station Opportunity: Later in the mission, after the intense firefight in the market square and before entering the final objective building, there's often a hidden Cyber Core Station in a small alleyway or a less-traveled building adjacent to the main route. This is a prime spot to unlock abilities like Immolation (Chaos) or Repulsor Armor (Martial).
Strategic Application of Cyber Cores
Choosing which Cyber Core to invest in depends heavily on your preferred playstyle and the mission at hand. You can switch between active cores at any Cyber Core Station, allowing for dynamic adaptation.
Control Core Strategies:
- Crowd Control: Use Remote Hijack on enemy robots like the ASP or Cerberus to turn their formidable firepower against their allies. This is particularly effective in open areas or during defensive stands.
- Stealth & Disruption: Protocol Override can disable enemy defenses and even cause human enemies to turn on each other, creating diversions or clearing paths without direct engagement.
- Objective Securing: Hijacking turrets overlooking objectives can significantly reduce enemy pressure during capture sequences.
Chaos Core Strategies:
- Area Denial: Firefly Swarm and Immolation are excellent for clearing out entrenched enemy positions or creating chokepoints. Deploy them into groups of enemies or through doorways before advancing.
- Escape & Evasion: Adaptive Invisibility is your best friend when you're overwhelmed. Use it to reposition, flank, or simply escape heavy fire. Combine it with Traverse for rapid movement.
- Disorientation: Many Chaos abilities inflict status effects, disorienting enemies and making them easier targets for your squad.
Martial Core Strategies:
- Aggressive Push: Overdrive combined with Unstoppable Force allows for incredibly aggressive pushes, clearing out rooms quickly and efficiently.
- Tanking Damage: Repulsor Armor significantly reduces incoming damage, making you a formidable front-line combatant. This is invaluable when facing heavy weapons or multiple enemies.
- Melee Dominance: Investing in Martial Core abilities turns your melee attacks into devastating tools, capable of taking down even armored enemies with ease.
Upgrading Cyber Cores
As you progress and earn experience, you'll gain Fabrication Kits. These kits are used at Cyber Core Stations to upgrade your existing abilities, enhancing their duration, damage, range, or reducing their cooldowns. Prioritize upgrades that complement your chosen playstyle. For example, if you frequently use Remote Hijack, upgrade its duration to maximize its impact on the battlefield.
Remember to experiment with different core combinations and abilities. The flexibility of the Cyber Core system is one of Black Ops III's greatest strengths, allowing for diverse and engaging tactical gameplay.
