Progression & Leveling
Welcome, operative, to the comprehensive guide on maximizing your progression and leveling in the intricate world of Black Ops III's RPG elements. Understanding these systems is paramount to unlocking powerful abilities, superior weaponry, and ultimately, dominating the battlefield. This section will break down the core mechanics, offering actionable strategies to ensure your ascent through the ranks is swift and efficient.
Experience Points (XP) Acquisition
XP is the lifeblood of your progression. Every action you take contributes to your overall level. While the core principle is simple, optimizing your XP gain requires strategic play.
- Campaign Missions: The primary source of XP. Completing objectives, eliminating enemies, and discovering intel all contribute significantly. Focus on completing all primary and secondary objectives within each mission. For example, in the mission "Provocation," ensuring all data caches are retrieved alongside eliminating the Warlord will yield bonus XP.
- Cyber Core Challenges: Each Cyber Core (Martial, Control, Chaos) has its own set of challenges. Actively pursuing these challenges, such as performing a certain number of Takedowns with the Martial Cyber Core or successfully executing Remote Hijacks with the Control Cyber Core, provides substantial XP bonuses upon completion.
- Weapon Leveling: Using any weapon, from the starting XR-2 assault rifle to the devastating Drakon sniper rifle, earns XP for that specific weapon. Weapon XP unlocks attachments and camos, but also contributes to your overall player XP. Experiment with different weapon types to maximize this.
- Scorestreaks: Successfully deploying and utilizing Scorestreaks, such as the UAV or Wraith, grants XP. Higher-tier Scorestreaks naturally offer more XP.
- Medals and Challenges: Beyond Cyber Core challenges, various in-game medals (e.g., "First Blood," "Headshot") and general challenges (e.g., "Get 100 kills with SMGs") provide consistent, albeit smaller, XP increments.
Unlocking Cyber Cores and Abilities
As you level up, you'll gain access to new Cyber Cores and unlock powerful abilities within them. Prioritizing certain unlocks can dramatically impact your effectiveness.
- Initial Cyber Core Selection: At the start of the campaign, you'll be prompted to choose your first Cyber Core. While all are viable, the Martial Cyber Core often provides a strong offensive foundation with abilities like Takedown and Rapid Strike, which are excellent for early-game combat.
- Cyber Core Upgrades: Each Cyber Core has multiple tiers of abilities. To unlock higher tiers, you must invest Cyber Cores (the in-game currency, not the core itself) earned through mission completion and specific challenges. For example, to unlock Adaptive Invisibility in the Chaos Cyber Core, you'll need to have invested a certain number of Cyber Cores into previous Chaos abilities.
- Strategic Unlocks: Consider your playstyle. If you prefer stealth, prioritize abilities like Active Camo from the Chaos Cyber Core. If you enjoy controlling the battlefield, focus on Remote Hijack and Protocol Override from the Control Cyber Core. Don't be afraid to respec your Cyber Core points early on if you find an ability isn't suiting your needs.
Weapon Unlocks and Customization
New weapons and customization options become available as you progress through the campaign and gain player levels. This is crucial for adapting to different combat scenarios.
- Player Level Unlocks: Specific weapons, such as the Kuda SMG or the Locus sniper rifle, are unlocked at predetermined player levels. Keep an eye on the "Levels and Unlocks" menu to see what's coming next.
- Weapon XP and Attachments: As you use a weapon, it gains its own XP, unlocking attachments like Foregrips, Extended Mags, and various optics (e.g., Red Dot Sight, ELO). These attachments significantly improve weapon performance. For instance, adding a Quickdraw Handle to your Man-O-War will drastically improve its aim-down-sight speed.
- Weapon Camos: Beyond attachments, weapon XP also unlocks cosmetic camos, allowing you to personalize your arsenal. While purely aesthetic, they offer a sense of accomplishment.
Zombies Progression (Optional but Rewarding)
While primarily a campaign guide, the Zombies mode offers a unique progression system that can indirectly benefit your overall Black Ops III experience through shared XP and unlockables.
- Gobblegum: In Zombies, you earn and consume "Gobblegums" which provide temporary buffs. While not directly tied to campaign progression, mastering Zombies can provide a refreshing break and hone your combat skills.
- Weapon Kits: Weapons you level up in Zombies can also gain attachments, similar to the campaign. This allows for a more customized experience within the mode.
- Shared XP: A portion of the XP earned in Zombies mode contributes to your overall player level, meaning even a detour into the undead apocalypse can help you unlock that next powerful ability for your campaign playthrough.
