Enemy Types & Weaknesses
Understanding your adversaries in Call of Duty: World at War is paramount to survival, especially on higher difficulties. The Imperial Japanese Army and the Wehrmacht each present unique challenges. This section details common enemy types, their typical weaponry, and most importantly, actionable strategies to exploit their weaknesses.
Imperial Japanese Army (Pacific Theater)
The Japanese forces are known for their aggressive banzai charges and proficiency with close-quarters combat. Expect them to prioritize flanking maneuvers and ambushes.
- Standard Infantry:
- Description: The most common enemy, equipped with Arisaka rifles, Type 100 SMGs, or occasionally Nambu pistols. They often wear standard green uniforms.
- Weaknesses:
- Headshots: Always the most effective. A single well-placed shot from any rifle (e.g., M1 Garand, Springfield) or even a burst from an SMG will neutralize them.
- Explosives: Japanese infantry tend to group up, making them highly vulnerable to Fragmentation Grenades (Frag Grenades) or the M2 Flamethrower. Use grenades to clear entrenched positions or disrupt charges.
- Suppression: Sustained fire from an M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) or a .30 Caliber Machine Gun can pin them down, making them easier targets for follow-up shots.
- Strategy: Maintain distance where possible. When they charge, prioritize targets with SMGs first, then riflemen. Use cover effectively and don't be afraid to retreat to a more defensible position.
- Banzai Chargers:
- Description: These fanatical soldiers will sprint directly at your position, often screaming "Banzai!" They are typically armed with bayonets or katanas.
- Weaknesses:
- Automatic Fire: The most reliable counter. Spray them down with an SMG (e.g., Thompson, MP40) or a light machine gun (LMG) like the BAR.
- Shotguns: The M1897 Trench Gun is devastating at close range, often taking out multiple chargers with a single blast.
- Melee Counter: If a charger gets too close, a quick melee attack (default 'V' key on PC) can often stun or kill them, giving you a crucial moment to finish them off.
- Explosives (Proximity): A well-timed Frag Grenade can stop a group of chargers dead in their tracks.
- Strategy: Listen for their distinct shouts. Prioritize them immediately as they pose an extreme close-range threat. Do not let them close the distance.
- Flamethrower Soldiers:
- Description: Heavily armored Japanese soldiers wielding the Type 93 Flamethrower. They are slow but incredibly dangerous at short to medium range.
- Weaknesses:
- Headshots: While their body armor is tough, their head remains vulnerable. Aim for the head with a high-damage rifle (e.g., Kar98k, M1 Garand).
- Fuel Tank: The large fuel tank on their back is a critical weak point. A few shots to this tank will cause a massive explosion, instantly killing them and any nearby enemies. This is the most efficient method.
- Explosives: A direct hit from a Frag Grenade or a well-placed rifle grenade can also detonate their fuel tank.
- Strategy: Keep your distance! Their flamethrower has a surprisingly long reach. Prioritize them immediately upon sighting, aiming for the fuel tank.
- Snipers:
- Description: Japanese snipers are often hidden in trees, elevated positions, or dense foliage, armed with scoped Arisaka rifles. They can inflict heavy damage from afar.
- Weaknesses:
- Spotting: Their primary weakness is being located. Look for muzzle flashes, glints from their scope, or listen for the distinct crack of their rifle.
- Counter-Sniping: Use your own scoped rifle (e.g., Springfield, Kar98k with scope) to eliminate them from a safe distance.
- Flanking: If direct engagement is too risky, try to flank their position and engage them from an unexpected angle with an SMG or rifle.
- Strategy: Always scan elevated and distant positions. If you take sniper fire, immediately seek cover and try to pinpoint their location before retaliating.
Wehrmacht (Eastern Front)
German forces are typically more disciplined and rely heavily on suppressing fire and coordinated assaults. They are well-equipped and often utilize heavy machine guns and armored vehicles.
- Standard Infantry:
- Description: The backbone of the German army, armed with Kar98k rifles, MP40 SMGs, or Luger pistols. They wear distinctive grey-green uniforms.
- Weaknesses:
- Headshots: As with all infantry, a headshot is a one-hit kill. The Mosin-Nagant and PPSh-41 are excellent for this.
- Flanking: German infantry often hold strong defensive lines. Flanking maneuvers, especially with a PPSh-41, can break their formations and expose their backs.
- Molotov Cocktails: Effective against bunched-up enemies or those behind light cover, forcing them to move.
- Strategy: Use cover-to-cover movement. Don't rush into open areas against entrenched Germans. Utilize your squadmates to draw fire while you flank.
- MG42 Gunners:
- Description: These heavy machine gunners are often stationary, providing devastating suppressive fire from fixed positions or sandbag emplacements. They are heavily armored from the front.
- Weaknesses:
- Flanking: Their most significant weakness. The MG42 has a narrow firing arc, making them extremely vulnerable from the sides or rear.
- Explosives: A well-aimed Frag Grenade or a Rifle Grenade (from a Kar98k equipped with a grenade launcher) can clear an MG nest.
- Sniper Fire: If a direct assault is impossible, a precise headshot from a scoped Mosin-Nagant can eliminate the gunner without exposing yourself to the MG42's fire.
- Strategy: Never approach an active MG42 position head-on. Always seek an alternative route to flank or use explosives. Smoke grenades can provide cover for an advance.
- Panzerschreck Soldiers:
- Description: German soldiers armed with the Panzerschreck anti-tank rocket launcher. They pose a significant threat to vehicles and can also be deadly against infantry in open areas.
- Weaknesses:
- Slow Reload: The Panzerschreck has a noticeable reload time after each shot. This is your window of opportunity.
- Vulnerability While Aiming: They are often exposed while aiming their launcher. Prioritize them with a quick burst from an SMG or a precise rifle shot.
- Explosives: A direct hit from a Frag Grenade will eliminate them before they can fire.
- Strategy: Identify them quickly. If you see one aiming, immediately take cover or engage them before they can launch a rocket.
- Snipers:
- Description: German snipers are typically found in ruins, windows, or other elevated vantage points, armed with scoped Kar98k rifles. They are patient and accurate.
- Weaknesses:
- Muzzle Flash/Scope Glint: Similar to Japanese snipers, look for these visual cues.
- Counter-Sniping: Utilize your own scoped Mosin-Nagant.
- Artillery/Air Support (when available): In missions where you can call in artillery or air strikes, these can be used to clear sniper nests from a distance.
- Strategy: Always be aware of your surroundings, especially open areas. If you hear a sniper shot, immediately go prone or seek hard cover and locate the threat.
