Vehicle Combat Strategies
Engaging in vehicle combat in Call of Duty: World at War can be a game-changer, offering both powerful offensive capabilities and crucial tactical advantages. Mastering these sections requires a different approach than standard infantry combat. This guide will walk you through effective strategies for both operating and countering various vehicles you'll encounter.
Operating Tanks: The M4 Sherman & Type 97 Chi-Ha
Throughout the Pacific and European theaters, you'll have opportunities to commandeer tanks. These armored behemoths are excellent for breaking stalemates and clearing heavily fortified positions. Understanding their strengths and weaknesses is key.
M4 Sherman (Allied Forces)
The M4 Sherman is a versatile tank, offering a good balance of firepower and mobility. You'll typically encounter it in missions like "Heart of the Reich" or "Vendetta" (though often as support, not directly controllable by You in all instances). When you do get to operate one, focus on these tactics:
- Primary Role: Anti-Infantry & Light Armor: The Sherman's main cannon is highly effective against infantry squads, machine gun nests, and lightly armored vehicles. Use it to clear out entrenched positions before your infantry advances.
- Hull Down Positions: Whenever possible, position your tank so that only its turret is exposed, using terrain features like hills or rubble for cover. This minimizes your vulnerable hull and maximizes your survivability.
- Prioritize Anti-Tank Threats: Enemy Panzerfaust soldiers, AT guns, and other tanks are your biggest threats. Always prioritize eliminating these targets first. Look for the distinct muzzle flash of a Panzerfaust or the larger profile of an enemy tank.
- Maintain Distance: While powerful, the Sherman is not invincible. Try to engage targets from a distance, where you can utilize your accuracy and the enemy's anti-tank weapons are less effective.
- Coordinated Assaults: If playing with AI teammates or in co-op, use your tank to draw enemy fire while your infantry flanks and eliminates threats that are difficult for the tank to hit.
Type 97 Chi-Ha (Imperial Japanese Army)
The Type 97 Chi-Ha, while less armored than the Sherman, is still a formidable asset in the Pacific. Its lighter build can sometimes offer better maneuverability in dense jungle environments.
- Flanking Maneuvers: Due to its lighter armor, the Chi-Ha benefits greatly from flanking maneuvers. Try to get behind enemy positions or tanks to hit their weaker rear armor.
- Jungle Warfare: Utilize the dense foliage of maps like "Hard Landing" or "Burn 'Em Out" to your advantage. Ambush enemy infantry and vehicles from unexpected angles.
- High Explosive Rounds: The Chi-Ha's cannon often comes with effective high-explosive rounds. These are excellent for clearing out groups of infantry and destroying light structures.
- Beware of Bazookas: American forces frequently employ Bazookas. If you see a soldier aiming one, immediately prioritize them or reposition to break their line of sight.
Countering Enemy Vehicles
Facing enemy tanks and armored vehicles without your own can be daunting, but with the right tools and tactics, you can turn the tide.
Anti-Tank Weapons
These are your primary means of destroying enemy armor. Always be on the lookout for them, especially in missions known for vehicle encounters.
- Panzerfaust (German): A single-shot, disposable rocket launcher. Highly effective against all types of armor. Aim for the rear or side armor for maximum damage. You'll find these frequently in European theater missions like "Ring of Steel."
- Bazooka (American): Similar to the Panzerfaust, the Bazooka is a powerful rocket launcher. Often found in specific weapon caches or dropped by specialized enemy soldiers in Pacific missions such as "Vendetta" or "Relentless."
- Sticky Bombs (Japanese): These unique anti-tank grenades are thrown and adhere to enemy vehicles before detonating. They require close proximity, making them risky but effective. Look for them in missions like "Blowtorch & Corkscrew." Throw multiple for guaranteed destruction.
Tactics for Destroying Tanks
- Flank and Rear Shots: All tanks have weaker armor on their sides and especially their rear. Always try to maneuver to these positions when using anti-tank weapons.
- Ambush Points: Identify choke points, narrow streets, or dense jungle paths where enemy tanks are forced to slow down or expose their flanks. Set up ambushes with multiple anti-tank weapons if possible.
- Distraction and Diversion: If you don't have anti-tank weapons, use grenades or suppressive fire to distract the tank's gunner while a teammate (or you, if playing solo and repositioning) gets into a prime position for an anti-tank attack.
- Explosive Barrels/Crates: Keep an eye out for environmental explosives like red barrels or explosive crates. Luring an enemy tank near these and detonating them can cause significant damage or even destroy the vehicle.
- Artillery/Air Support: In certain missions, you may have access to call in artillery strikes or air support. These are devastating against tanks. Ensure you mark the target accurately and quickly. For example, in "Black Cats," accurate bombing runs are crucial against Japanese destroyers.
Machine Gun Nests & Half-Tracks
While not as heavily armored as tanks, these vehicles and emplacements can pin down your squad and inflict heavy casualties.
Countering Machine Gun Nests
- Smoke Grenades: Use smoke grenades to obscure the gunner's vision, allowing you to advance or flank.
- Frag Grenades: A well-placed frag grenade can clear a machine gun nest instantly. Aim for the opening or directly behind the shield.
- Sniper Fire: If you have a sniper rifle, target the gunner's head through the gun shield's opening.
- Flamethrower: The Flamethrower is incredibly effective against entrenched positions, including machine gun nests. The flames will bypass the shield and incinerate the operator.
Dealing with Half-Tracks
Half-tracks are often equipped with powerful machine guns and can transport infantry. They are less resilient than tanks.
- Anti-Tank Weapons: A single Panzerfaust or Bazooka round is usually enough to disable or destroy a half-track.
- Heavy Machine Guns: Your own heavy machine guns, like the MG42 or Browning, can penetrate the half-track's armor with sustained fire, especially if targeting the engine block.
- Explosives: Frag grenades or satchel charges can also be used effectively, particularly if you can get close enough to attach or throw them accurately.
