Relics & Abilities
As Soma Cruz, your journey through Dracula's Castle will be greatly aided by discovering and utilizing various Relics and innate abilities. These special items and skills grant Soma new movement options, passive bonuses, or unique actions that are crucial for progression and uncovering all the castle's secrets. Mastering their use is key to conquering the challenges ahead in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow on both the Game Boy Advance and Wii U platforms.
Movement & Progression Abilities
These abilities directly enhance Soma's mobility, allowing access to previously unreachable areas. Prioritizing their acquisition is vital for exploration and story progression.
-
Double Jump
- Type: Innate Ability (Gained after boss defeat)
- Effect: Allows Soma to perform a second jump in mid-air, significantly extending his vertical reach and enabling access to higher platforms.
- Acquisition: This ability is gained automatically after defeating the boss Malphas in the Dance Hall.
- Navigate to the Dance Hall, typically accessed from the Castle Study.
- Proceed through the Dance Hall until you encounter the boss chamber for Malphas.
- Defeat Malphas.
- Upon victory, Soma will automatically learn the Double Jump ability.
- Strategy: This is one of the earliest and most impactful movement upgrades. Once obtained, simply press the jump button a second time while airborne to execute a double jump. It's crucial for accessing many early-game areas, shortcuts, and reaching platforms that were just out of reach. Practice combining it with regular jumps for optimal height.
-
High Jump
- Type: Innate Ability (Gained after boss defeat)
- Effect: Significantly increases Soma's jump height, allowing him to reach extremely tall platforms and bypass large vertical obstacles.
- Acquisition: This ability is gained automatically after defeating the boss Great Armor in the Underground Reservoir.
- Access the Underground Reservoir, typically from the Castle Study or Dance Hall.
- Explore the Underground Reservoir until you locate the boss chamber for Great Armor.
- Defeat Great Armor.
- Upon victory, Soma will automatically learn the High Jump ability.
- Strategy: To activate High Jump, hold the 'Down' button and then press the jump button. This will launch Soma much higher than a regular jump or even a double jump. It's often required to reach very tall platforms or bypass certain environmental puzzles. Be aware that you cannot attack or use souls during the High Jump animation.
-
Soul of Bat
- Type: Bullet Soul (Dropped by enemy)
- Effect: Transforms Soma into a bat, allowing free flight in any direction. Essential for reaching extremely high ledges, bypassing large gaps, and navigating complex areas.
- Acquisition: This is a rare drop from the enemy Giant Bat.
- The Giant Bat enemy can be found in several locations, most notably the Underground Reservoir and the Floating Gardens.
- Farm Giant Bat enemies until the Soul of Bat drops. This may take multiple attempts due to its low drop rate. Consider equipping luck-enhancing gear (e.g., Rare Ring) to improve your chances.
- Strategy: To use it, press the 'Up' button while jumping. You can toggle between flying and walking by pressing 'Up' again while airborne. Remember that while flying, you cannot attack or use other souls. This soul is absolutely critical for 100% map completion and accessing late-game areas.
Utility & Passive Relics
These Relics provide passive benefits or grant Soma special actions that aren't directly tied to movement but are invaluable for exploration, combat, and uncovering secrets. Unlike innate abilities or souls, these are typically found as static items in the castle.
-
Undine Soul
- Type: Enchant Soul (Dropped by enemy)
- Effect: Allows Soma to walk on water surfaces as if they were solid ground. This prevents him from sinking into deep water.
- Acquisition: This is a common drop from the enemy Undine.
- The Undine enemy is found exclusively in the Underground Reservoir.
- Defeat Undine enemies until their soul drops. This soul has a relatively high drop rate.
- Strategy: Once equipped as an Enchant Soul, Soma will no longer sink in water. This opens up many submerged pathways and allows you to traverse areas that were previously impassable due to deep water. It's particularly useful in the Underground Reservoir itself and later sections of the castle that feature water. This soul is often required to reach other Relics or progress through certain areas.
-
Merman Soul
- Type: Enchant Soul (Dropped by enemy)
- Effect: Allows Soma to move freely underwater without being slowed down by water resistance. This complements the Undine Soul by enabling efficient underwater exploration.
- Acquisition: This is a common drop from the enemy Merman.
- The Merman enemy is found in the deeper water sections of the Underground Reservoir.
- Defeat Merman enemies until their soul drops. This soul has a relatively high drop rate.
- Strategy: This soul complements Undine perfectly. While Undine lets you walk on water, Merman allows for unhindered movement through water. This is essential for exploring the deeper parts of the Underground Reservoir and other water-filled areas efficiently, especially when combined with the Undine Soul.
-
Grave Keeper
- Type: Relic
- Effect: Displays the names of enemies when you target them, making it easier to identify them and track your soul collection progress.
- Acquisition: Located in the Dance Hall.
- From the main entrance to the Dance Hall (coming from the Castle Study), proceed right until you reach a large, vertical shaft.
- Descend this shaft.
- Take the first exit to the right.
- In this room, you'll find the Grave Keeper Relic on a pedestal.
- Strategy: While not essential for progression, Grave Keeper is incredibly useful for tracking which souls you've collected and identifying new enemies. It helps immensely with soul farming and completing your Tactical Soul collection, as it shows the enemy's name and whether you've already obtained their soul.
-
Stone of Satori
- Type: Relic
- Effect: Allows Soma to break certain magical barriers and reveal hidden passages. These barriers often conceal secret rooms or shortcuts.
- Acquisition: Found in the Underground Reservoir.
- First, you must have acquired the Undine Soul (from Undine enemies).
- Head to the far left side of the Underground Reservoir.
- You'll find a room with a large waterfall.
- Use the Undine Soul to walk across the water and reach a hidden passage behind the waterfall.
- Enter this passage, and the Stone of Satori awaits.
- Strategy: This Relic is crucial for uncovering many secrets and achieving 100% map completion. When near a magical barrier or a hidden passage, Soma will glow briefly. Press the 'Up' button while facing the barrier to dispel it or reveal the passage. Keep an eye out for these subtle visual cues, as many valuable items and areas are hidden behind them.
-
Giant Bat Soul
- Type: Bullet Soul (Dropped by enemy)
- Effect: Enhances the Soul of Bat, allowing Soma to perform a powerful sonic attack while in bat form.
- Acquisition: This is a rare drop from the boss Death in the Forbidden Area.
- Progress through the castle until you reach the Forbidden Area.
- Locate and defeat the boss Death.
- Upon victory, the Giant Bat Soul will automatically be added to your inventory.
- Strategy: After acquiring this soul, while transformed into a bat (using the Soul of Bat), press the attack button to unleash a sonic wave that damages enemies. This is excellent for clearing paths, dealing damage to flying foes without reverting to human form, or activating switches that require a projectile. It consumes MP with each use.
-
Black Panther Soul
- Type: Bullet Soul (Dropped by enemy)
- Effect: Allows Soma to dash forward at high speed, passing through enemies and certain obstacles. Useful for quick traversal and dodging attacks.
- Acquisition: This is a rare drop from the enemy Black Panther.
- The Black Panther enemy is found in the Floating Gardens and later areas.
- Farm Black Panther enemies until the Black Panther Soul drops. This may require multiple attempts.
- Strategy: Equip this as a Bullet Soul. To use it, press the assigned Bullet Soul button. Soma will dash forward quickly, consuming MP. This is excellent for covering ground rapidly, dodging projectiles or enemy attacks, and passing through weaker enemies without taking damage. It's also useful for reaching certain areas that require a quick burst of speed.
-
Kicker Skeleton Soul
- Type: Bullet Soul (Dropped by enemy)
- Effect: Allows Soma to perform a powerful slide kick, useful for attacking low-lying enemies or breaking certain environmental objects.
- Acquisition: This is a common drop from the enemy Kicker Skeleton.
- The Kicker Skeleton enemy is found in the Castle Corridor and other early-game areas.
- Defeat Kicker Skeleton enemies until their soul drops.
- Strategy: Equip this as a Bullet Soul. To use it, press the assigned Bullet Soul button. Soma will perform a quick slide kick. While not a movement relic in the traditional sense, it can be used to quickly traverse small gaps or attack enemies efficiently while maintaining momentum.
