Julius Mode Walkthrough
Welcome, Belmonts! Ready to wield the legendary Vampire Killer once more? Julius Mode offers a unique, challenging, and fast-paced experience in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. Unlike Soma's journey, Julius begins with all his abilities unlocked, focusing purely on combat prowess and strategic movement. There are no souls to collect, no equipment to manage, and no level-ups. Your success hinges on mastering Julius's moveset and understanding enemy patterns. To unlock this mode, simply complete the game as Soma Cruz and enter "JULIUS" as your name on a new save file.
Julius's Abilities and Controls
Julius Belmont is a powerhouse from the start. Familiarize yourself with his core abilities:
- Whip Attack (B Button): Your primary offensive tool. It's powerful and has good reach.
- Sub-Weapons (Up + B Button): Julius has access to three classic Castlevania sub-weapons, cycling through them with the L button. Each consumes MP.
- Axe: Throws an axe in an arc, excellent for enemies above or behind obstacles.
- Holy Water: Creates a flame pillar on the ground, effective against grounded enemies and for area denial.
- Cross: Flies forward, hitting multiple enemies and returning to Julius, dealing damage on both passes. Highly effective against bosses.
- Dash (R Button): A quick burst of speed, invaluable for dodging attacks and traversing areas quickly.
- High Jump (Down + A Button): Allows Julius to reach higher platforms. Essential for exploration.
- Slide (Down + L Button): A quick slide that can pass under certain obstacles and provides a small invincibility window.
General Strategy for Julius Mode
- Aggression is Key: Julius is designed for offense. Don't be afraid to get in close and unleash whip combos.
- Sub-Weapon Management: MP regenerates slowly. Use sub-weapons strategically, especially the Cross for boss encounters. Break candles and lamps frequently to replenish hearts, which fuel sub-weapons.
- Movement Mastery: Combine Dash, High Jump, and Slide to navigate the castle efficiently and avoid damage.
- No Healing Items: Unlike Soma, Julius cannot use potions or food. Rely on red hearts dropped by enemies for HP recovery. This makes avoiding damage even more critical.
- Boss Rush: Julius Mode is essentially a boss rush with platforming sections in between. Be prepared for intense boss fights.
Walkthrough: Castle Progression
Castle Corridor
Your journey begins here. Head right, dispatching Zombies and Skeletons. Practice your whip attacks and sub-weapon usage. There are no hidden items to worry about in this mode, so focus on progression.
Chapel
Proceed through the Chapel. The flying Bats and Bone Pillars can be annoying; use your whip's reach or an Axe sub-weapon for the Bone Pillars. Your first boss awaits.
- Boss: Creaking Skull
- Strategy: This boss is straightforward. Stay close, whip its head, and use the Cross sub-weapon for extra damage. Dodge its bone projectiles by jumping or dashing.
Study
After the Creaking Skull, continue into the Study. You'll encounter Flea Men and Ghost. The Flea Men are small and fast; a well-timed whip or Holy Water can deal with them. The Ghost can be annoying; try to hit them as they materialize.
Cursed Clock Tower
This area introduces more challenging platforming. Watch out for the Harpies and the rotating gears. Your High Jump is crucial here. The Medusa Heads are a classic Castlevania nuisance; time your jumps and whips carefully.
- Boss: Manticore
- Strategy: The Manticore is agile. Stay on the ground and whip its body. When it flies, use your Axe or Cross. Be mindful of its poison tail attack and fire breath. Dash through its charges.
Underground Cemetery
Navigate the dark and damp Underground Cemetery. Skeletons and Zombies are prevalent. The large Ghouls can be tough; use your whip's full combo. You'll encounter the next boss here.
- Boss: Great Armor
- Strategy: This slow but powerful foe can be tricky. Get behind it and unleash whip combos. When it raises its shield, use the Cross sub-weapon to bypass its defense. Dodge its slow sword swings by dashing or jumping over them.
Castle Corridor (Revisited) & Arena
You'll loop back through a section of the Castle Corridor before reaching the Arena. This area is packed with stronger enemies like the Killer Doll and the Minotaur. Be cautious and use your sub-weapons to clear groups.
- Boss: Headhunter
- Strategy: The Headhunter changes forms. Focus on hitting its main body. When it transforms into the axe-wielding form, stay mobile and use the Cross. Its ranged attacks can be dodged with a well-timed dash.
Dance Hall
The Dance Hall features dancing zombies and the occasional Succubus. The Succubus can be annoying with her charm attack; prioritize her. This area also houses a critical boss.
- Boss: Chronomage
- Strategy: The Chronomage manipulates time. When it slows time, your movements will be affected, but its attacks will also be slower. Use the Cross sub-weapon to hit it consistently. Be aggressive when time is normal.
Floating Garden
This beautiful but dangerous area has flying enemies and tricky platforms. The Mandragoras can be annoying with their ground-based attacks. The next boss is a true test of skill.
- Boss: Balore
- Strategy: Balore is a massive demon. His attacks are powerful but predictable. Stay close to his body, whipping his head. When he raises his fist, prepare to dodge his ground pound. The Cross sub-weapon is highly effective here.
Clock Tower (Upper) & Top Floor
Ascend the Clock Tower, dealing with more Medusa Heads and other aerial threats. The Top Floor leads to the final confrontations.
- Boss: Graham Jones
- Strategy: Graham is a human opponent, making him fast and agile. His holy attacks can be devastating. Use your dash to get behind him and unleash whip combos. The Cross is good for consistent damage. Learn his patterns and exploit openings.
Chaos Realm
The final gauntlet. This area is a mashup of previous environments and features the toughest enemies. Be prepared for a relentless assault. Your final challenge awaits.
- Boss: Chaos (Menace)
- Strategy: The ultimate evil. Chaos has multiple forms and attacks.
- First Form: Focus on its head, dodging its various elemental attacks. The Cross is your best friend here.
- Second Form: This form has a large, vulnerable eye. Attack it relentlessly. Watch out for its laser and summoning attacks. Maintain constant pressure with your whip and Cross.
- Strategy: The ultimate evil. Chaos has multiple forms and attacks.
Congratulations, Belmont! You have once again vanquished Dracula's castle and proven your lineage. Enjoy the satisfaction of conquering Aria of Sorrow as the legendary Julius Belmont!
