Story & Lore
Welcome, fellow demon hunter, to the heart of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow's narrative! This section delves deep into the game's rich story, unraveling the mysteries surrounding Soma Cruz and the enigmatic castle. Understanding the lore isn't just for flavor; it provides crucial context for your journey and even hints at late-game revelations.
The Premise: 2035 and the Eclipse
Our story begins in the year 2035. Soma Cruz, an ordinary Japanese high school student, finds himself inexplicably drawn to a solar eclipse alongside his childhood friend, Mina Hakuba. As they gaze upon the celestial event from the Hakuba Shrine, they are suddenly transported into a mysterious, anachronistic castle. This castle is none other than Dracula's Castle, sealed away within the eclipse itself.
Upon entering, Soma quickly discovers he possesses a unique power: the "Power of Dominance," allowing him to absorb the souls of defeated monsters and wield their abilities. This power, initially a tool for survival, becomes central to understanding his true nature and the castle's purpose.
Key Characters and Their Roles
Throughout your exploration, you'll encounter a diverse cast of characters, each with their own motivations and secrets:
- Soma Cruz: The protagonist, a seemingly ordinary young man who awakens to extraordinary powers within Dracula's Castle. His journey is one of self-discovery.
- Mina Hakuba: Soma's childhood friend and a miko (shrine maiden) at the Hakuba Shrine. She is a source of emotional support for Soma, though her direct involvement in the castle is limited.
- Genya Arikado: A mysterious government agent with an uncanny resemblance to Alucard from previous Castlevania titles. He guides Soma, providing cryptic advice and testing his resolve. Arikado possesses immense power and knowledge of the castle's true nature.
- Hammer: A former soldier who now runs a shop within the castle. He sells weapons, armor, and items, and provides a safe haven for Soma. His presence is a welcome relief in the demon-infested halls.
- Yoko Belnades: A witch from the Belnades clan, a lineage known for its magical prowess. She is investigating the castle and its connection to the eclipse. Yoko offers valuable insights into the magical properties of the castle and its inhabitants.
- Graham Jones: A charismatic cult leader who believes he is the reincarnation of Dracula. He seeks to claim the castle's power for himself and is a primary antagonist in the early to mid-game.
The Castle's Purpose and the Dark Lord
The castle itself is a living entity, a manifestation of chaos and evil. It draws power from the souls of the damned and serves as a conduit for the resurrection of the Dark Lord. The eclipse acts as a gateway, pulling those with a connection to the Dark Lord into its depths.
As you progress, you'll learn that the castle is not merely a prison but a crucible, designed to test and ultimately empower the next incarnation of Dracula. The "Power of Dominance" that Soma wields is, in fact, the very power of the Dark Lord, allowing him to absorb and control the souls of demons.
Unveiling the Truth: The Bad Ending Path
To fully grasp the story, it's crucial to understand the conditions for the "bad ending," as it reveals a critical piece of lore. If you defeat Graham Jones without having equipped specific souls, you will trigger this ending. This path highlights Soma's vulnerability to the castle's corrupting influence.
Bad Ending Walkthrough:
- Progress through the castle normally: Fight your way through the various areas, defeating bosses like the Great Armor and Manticore.
- Reach the Top Floor: This is where Graham Jones awaits.
- Do NOT equip the following souls before fighting Graham:
- Flame Demon (Bullet Soul): Dropped by Flame Demon enemies in the Underground Cemetery and Castle Corridor.
- Giant Bat (Guardian Soul): Dropped by Giant Bat enemies in the Castle Corridor and Chapel.
- Succubus (Enchant Soul): Dropped by Succubus enemies in the Dance Hall.
- Defeat Graham Jones: Engage him in battle. Without the protective influence of these souls, Soma succumbs to the Dark Lord's power.
- Witness the Bad Ending: Soma becomes the new Dark Lord, and the cycle of evil continues. This ending serves as a stark warning and emphasizes the importance of the true ending path.
Understanding this path is vital because it sets the stage for the true ending, where Soma must actively resist the Dark Lord's influence and embrace his humanity.
