The Study serves as the second major area of Dracula's Castle, a labyrinthine library that houses critical mobility upgrades and essential souls. To enter, you must head west from the Castle Corridor after defeating the Creaking Skull. This zone is characterized by vertical book-lined shafts and fragile glass walkways that test your platforming precision.
Critical Path & Progress
Your primary objective in the Study is to defeat the boss, Great Armor, located in the far western wing. Defeating him allows access to the chamber containing the Malphas ability soul. This soul grants Soma the Double Jump, an essential ability required to reach the Chapel and high-altitude platforms in the Castle Corridor.
Key Items & Notable Souls
- Malphas (Ability Soul): Dropped in the room behind the Great Armor. Grants the "Double Jump" ability.
- Ancient Book 1: Found in a hidden room; essential for unlocking the true ending later in the game.
- Whip Knuckle: A powerful early-game fist weapon found tucked in a crevice in the central vertical shaft.
- Melting Mail: Located behind a destructible wall, providing significant defense against fire-based attacks.
Enemy Intelligence
The Study introduces enemies that require specific counter-strategies:
- Student Witch: These casters hover out of reach and fire homing cats. Use the Spear or long-range weapons to dispatch them quickly.
- Ectoplasm: These ghosts inflict the "Cursed" status, draining your MP. Their soul is highly valuable as it provides resistance to curses.
- Great Armor (Boss): This heavy knight uses a long-reaching sword. Use a hit-and-run tactic, jumping over his low swings and exploiting his slow recovery time after he thrusts his shield forward.
- Minotaur: A heavy hitter located at the bottom of the shafts. Watch for his axe overhead swing; it is best to slide underneath him when he raises his weapon.
Puzzle Element: The Moving Bookshelves
Several rooms in the Study feature bookshelves that move based on Soma's position or the activation of switches. If you find yourself blocked, look for a Catoblepas nearby; its petrification beam can be used to freeze certain enemies in place to act as temporary platforms if you have not yet acquired the Double Jump.
