Enemy Bestiary & Strategies
Welcome, vampire hunters, to the definitive guide to surviving the horrors within Castlevania: Bloodlines! This section details the myriad creatures you'll encounter on your perilous journey, offering specific strategies to overcome each one. Understanding your foes is the first step to victory against Dracula's resurrected forces.
Stage 1: Romania - The Ruined Castle
Zombie
- Description: The most basic of Dracula's minions, shambling slowly across the ground. They are easily dispatched but can overwhelm in numbers or by pushing you into environmental hazards.
- Strategy:
- John Morris: Use your Vampire Killer whip for a quick one-hit kill. Maintain distance and strike as they approach. If multiple zombies are present, a well-timed Axe can clear a path.
- Eric Lecarde: His Alucard Spear can also one-shot these foes. use its reach to keep them at bay. The Boomerang sub-weapon is excellent for hitting multiple zombies in a line.
- Advanced: Don't waste valuable sub-weapon hearts on single zombies unless absolutely necessary for crowd control. Prioritize avoiding contact damage.
Skeleton
- Description: Reanimated bones that often appear in groups. Some Skeletons will simply walk, while others may throw bones in an arc.
- Strategy:
- John Morris: Approach cautiously. If they throw bones, duck under the projectile and then whip. For groups, a Cross can clear the screen or stun them, allowing for easy follow-up attacks.
- Eric Lecarde: The Alucard Spear's upward thrust is perfect for hitting Skeletons on ledges or those throwing bones from a slight elevation. The Holy Water can be effective for ground-based skeletons, creating a damaging zone they'll walk into.
- Location Tip: In the early sections of Stage 1, you'll encounter Skeletons frequently. Keep an eye out for candle drops containing hearts to fuel your sub-weapons.
Bat
- Description: Small, agile flying enemies that swoop down from the ceiling or corners of the screen. They are fast but have low health.
- Strategy:
- John Morris: A single whip strike will take them down. Anticipate their dive pattern and strike them at the peak of their descent or as they begin to rise. The Knife can be useful for quick, long-range hits if you're struggling with timing.
- Eric Lecarde: The Alucard Spear's rapid thrust makes short work of bats. Jump and attack to hit them mid-air. If you have the Axe, it can be thrown upwards to clear multiple bats quickly.
- Caution: Bats often appear in areas with other enemies or platforming challenges, making them a nuisance. Clear them first if possible to avoid being knocked into pits or other dangers.
Medusa Head
- Description: Flying snake-like heads that move in a distinctive wave pattern. They are small and can be difficult to hit consistently.
- Strategy:
- John Morris: The key is timing. Wait for them to reach the lowest point of their wave pattern, then whip. Don't rush, as their erratic movement can lead to frustrating contact damage.
- Eric Lecarde: Eric's spear has a slightly different hitbox, which can make hitting Medusa Heads easier or harder depending on your position. Try jumping and attacking at the apex of their wave. The Boomerang can be highly effective here, as it travels across the screen and returns, often hitting multiple heads.
- Environmental Awareness: Medusa Heads frequently appear over bottomless pits or dangerous platforms. Prioritize clearing them before attempting difficult jumps.
Stage 2: Atlantis - The Sunken City
Merman
- Description: Amphibious creatures that emerge from the water, often spitting fireballs or jumping towards you. They are a common threat in aquatic and water-adjacent levels.
- Strategy:
- John Morris: Keep your distance. If they spit fire, duck or jump over the projectile, then whip them as they resurface or jump. The Axe is excellent for hitting them as they leap from the water.
- Eric Lecarde: The Alucard Spear's reach is a great advantage here. You can often hit them before they fully emerge. If they jump, use an upward thrust. The Boomerang can also hit them as they pop out of the water.
- Water Hazards: Be mindful of the water itself. Falling in can lead to instant death or damage, so focus on clearing Mermen from safe ground.
Fishman
- Description: Similar to Mermen, these creatures are found in underwater sections or areas with deep water. They swim towards you and can be surprisingly fast.
- Strategy:
- John Morris: In underwater sections, your whip attack is slightly slower. Anticipate their movement and strike early. The Knife can be useful for quick, precise hits in the water.
- Eric Lecarde: Eric's spear is generally more effective underwater due to its thrusting motion. Aim carefully to hit them as they approach. The Holy Water can create a damaging area in the water, but its utility is limited by the fast movement of Fishmen.
- Underwater Combat: Movement is often restricted underwater. Try to lure Fishmen into predictable patterns or bottlenecks to make them easier targets.
General Enemy Strategies & Item Usage
Sub-Weapons (Sub-Weapons)
- Axe: Throws an axe in an arc upwards. Excellent for enemies on ledges, flying enemies, or clearing groups directly above you.
- Boomerang (Cross): Throws a cross that travels across the screen and returns. Hits enemies on both passes. Invaluable for clearing horizontal lines of enemies or hitting bosses multiple times.
- Holy Water: Throws a vial that shatters on the ground, creating a pillar of flame. Damages enemies standing in the flame. Great for ground-based enemies or creating a defensive zone.
- Knife: Throws a fast, straight projectile. Good for quick, long-range damage against single targets. Less effective against groups.
Items (Items)
- Hearts: Replenish your sub-weapon meter. Small hearts give 1 heart, large hearts give 5. Crucial for consistent sub-weapon usage.
- Meat: Restores a portion of your health. Often hidden in breakable blocks or dropped by specific enemies. Always prioritize picking these up.
- Money Bags: Increase your score. While not directly impacting gameplay, a higher score can lead to extra lives.
- 1-Up: Grants an extra life. Extremely rare and usually found in secret locations or dropped by specific, tougher enemies.
- Invincibility Potion: Grants temporary invincibility. Use this strategically during challenging enemy gauntlets or against bosses to deal free damage.
Remember, observation is key. Learn enemy patterns, understand their weaknesses, and use your chosen character's strengths and sub-weapons effectively. Good luck, hunters!
