Boss: Balore
Balore is the second boss you'll encounter in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, found at the end of the Wizardry Lab. This giant, one-eyed demon serves as a significant step up in challenge from the Flying Armor, testing your ability to dodge and exploit openings. Defeating Balore grants you the invaluable Giant Bat soul, which allows Soma to transform into a bat, opening up new areas of the castle.
Preparation
Before entering Balore's chamber, ensure you are adequately prepared. A little foresight can make this fight significantly easier.
- Level: Aim for at least Level 10-12. While possible at lower levels, it becomes much more challenging.
- Equipment:
- Weapon: The Broadsword is a solid choice if you've found it. Otherwise, your strongest available sword or knife will suffice.
- Armor: Equip the best armor you have. The Cotton Robe or Leather Plate are common finds by this point.
- Accessories: The Cape or Talisman can offer minor defensive boosts.
- Souls:
- Bullet Soul: The Axe Armor soul (found in the Wizardry Lab) is highly recommended. Its upward arc can hit Balore's eye consistently. Alternatively, the Witch soul's Magic Missile is also effective.
- Guardian Soul: The Ghost soul can provide a small boost to luck if you're hoping for a rare drop, but isn't critical for the fight itself.
- Enchant Soul: The Killer Clown soul (found in the Wizardry Lab) increases your luck, potentially helping with drops.
- Consumables: Stock up on Potions and High Potions from Yoko's shop in the Lost Village. Having at least 3-5 Potions is a good idea.
Balore's Attacks & Strategies
Balore has a limited but powerful set of attacks. The key to victory lies in understanding his patterns and knowing when to strike.
Phase 1: Eye Open
Balore will primarily attack with his open eye. Your main goal is to damage this eye.
- Eye Laser: Balore charges up and fires a wide laser beam across the screen.
- Strategy: This is your primary opening. When Balore charges the laser, his eye is vulnerable. Jump and use your Axe Armor soul to hit his eye from above. After firing, he will recoil, leaving his eye open for a few more hits with your main weapon.
- Dodge: To avoid the laser, simply duck under it. The laser will sweep from top to bottom, so stay low.
- Eye Slam: Balore slams his open eye down onto the platform.
- Strategy: This attack is less frequent. When you see his eye move towards the ground, prepare to jump over it. You can get a few hits in as it retracts, but prioritize dodging.
Phase 2: Eye Closed / Fist Attacks
After taking enough damage, Balore will close his eye, becoming temporarily invulnerable to direct attacks on his face. He will then resort to physical attacks with his fists.
- Fist Slam (Ground): Balore slams his fist onto the ground, creating a shockwave that travels across the floor.
- Strategy: Jump over the shockwave. You can often get a hit or two on his fist as it lands or retracts, but be careful not to get caught in the shockwave.
- Fist Slam (Ceiling): Balore slams his fist into the ceiling, causing debris to fall.
- Strategy: Watch for the falling debris and move to avoid it. This attack is harder to punish directly, so focus on evasion.
- Fist Sweep: Balore sweeps his fist across the arena.
- Strategy: Jump over the sweeping fist. This is another opportunity for a quick hit if you're positioned well.
Once Balore takes enough damage from his fist attacks, his eye will reopen, and the cycle will repeat. Continue to exploit the Eye Laser opening with your Axe Armor soul and follow up with melee attacks.
General Tips for the Fight
- Stay Mobile: Balore is a large target, but his attacks cover a wide area. Always be ready to jump or duck.
- Conserve MP: While the Axe Armor soul is excellent, don't spam it if you're low on MP. Save it for when Balore's eye is open and vulnerable.
- Heal Wisely: Use Potions when you have a clear opening, such as immediately after Balore performs an Eye Laser and is recoiling, or during a Fist Slam if you've successfully dodged.
- Soul Drop: Balore has a chance to drop his own soul, the Balore soul, which grants a powerful punch attack. This is not required for progression but is a nice bonus.
By following these strategies, Balore should fall relatively quickly, granting you the Giant Bat soul and allowing you to explore new heights in the castle!
