Boss: Malphas
Malphas, the giant raven demon, is the fourth major boss you'll encounter in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. This battle takes place in the Garden of Madness. While Malphas can be a challenge, understanding its attack patterns and utilizing the right equipment and souls will make this fight manageable.
Recommended Setup
- Weapon: A fast-hitting weapon like the Whip Sword or Rapier is ideal for consistent damage. If you've been upgrading, the Broadsword can also work well for its higher damage per hit.
- Armor: Equip the best defensive gear you have available. The Cotton Robe or Leather Plate are good choices if you haven't found anything better.
- Accessory: The Talisman (found in the Wizardry Lab) offers a slight luck boost, which can be helpful for soul drops, but for this fight, a defensive accessory like the Defense Ring (if you have it) is more beneficial.
- Souls:
- Bullet Soul: The Axe Armor soul is highly recommended. Its upward axe throw can hit Malphas even when it's flying high. Alternatively, the Slime soul (for its slow-moving projectile) or Killer Clown (for its boomerang) can also be effective.
- Guardian Soul: The Ghost soul is excellent for its MP regeneration, allowing you to use your Bullet Souls more frequently. The Bone Pillar soul for its defense boost is also a viable option.
- Enchant Soul: The Witch soul (for INT boost) or Minotaur soul (for STR boost) will enhance your damage output depending on your chosen weapon and Bullet Soul.
- Consumables: Stock up on Potions and High Potions. Having a few Mind Ups can also be useful if you rely heavily on Bullet Souls.
Malphas's Attack Patterns and Strategy
Malphas has a few distinct attacks you'll need to learn to avoid. The key to this fight is patience and capitalizing on its vulnerabilities.
- Feather Barrage: Malphas will occasionally fly to the top of the screen and unleash a volley of feathers downwards.
- Strategy: When you see Malphas ascend, quickly move to the far left or right side of the screen. The feathers spread out, so staying on the edges will give you the most room to dodge. You can often get a few hits in with an upward-hitting Bullet Soul (like the Axe Armor) as it's moving into position.
- Dive Attack: Malphas will swoop down from the top of the screen, attempting to ram Soma.
- Strategy: This attack is telegraphed by Malphas pausing briefly at the top before diving. As it dives, slide under it or use a well-timed jump to avoid contact. This is a prime opportunity to land a few hits with your main weapon as it passes by.
- Egg Drop: Malphas will sometimes fly across the screen and drop a large egg. This egg will hatch into a smaller bird enemy if not destroyed quickly.
- Strategy: Prioritize destroying the egg as soon as it appears. A few quick strikes from your weapon should suffice. If it hatches, deal with the smaller bird immediately to prevent it from becoming a nuisance.
- Talon Swipe (Ground): If you are close to Malphas when it's on the ground, it may attempt a close-range claw swipe.
- Strategy: This attack is less common if you maintain distance. If it does happen, jump over it or slide away.
General Battle Flow
- Stay Mobile: Always be moving. Malphas is a large target, but its attacks cover a good portion of the screen.
- Hit and Run: After Malphas completes an attack, there's usually a brief window to get in a few hits with your primary weapon. Don't get greedy; retreat before its next attack.
- Utilize Bullet Souls: The Axe Armor soul is incredibly effective here. You can often hit Malphas even when it's flying high, allowing for consistent damage without putting yourself in immediate danger.
- Manage MP: Keep an eye on your MP bar. Use your Ghost soul (if equipped) to regenerate MP, or consume Mind Ups as needed.
- Healing: Don't hesitate to use Potions if your health drops significantly. It's better to heal and continue the fight than to risk being defeated.
By following these strategies and staying observant of Malphas's movements, you'll soon defeat this avian menace and continue your journey through the castle!
