The Soul System is the core mechanic of Dawn of Sorrow, allowing Soma to absorb the souls of defeated enemies and gain their abilities. There are four types of souls, each with a distinct function:

- Bullet Souls (Red): Active offensive abilities, consumed MP per use. Equip one at a time. Examples: Axe Armor (throw axe), Flame Demon (fireball).
- Guardian Souls (Blue): Active defensive or utility abilities, consume MP while active. Equip one at a time. Examples: Flying Armor (glide), Bat (transform into bat).
- Enchant Souls (Yellow): Passive stat boosts or special effects. Always active once equipped, no MP cost. Equip one at a time. Examples: Skeleton (throw bones), Warg (increased STR).
- Ability Souls (Silver): Essential movement or permanent abilities. Once acquired, they are always active and do not need to be equipped. Examples: Double Jump, Slide.
Souls are dropped randomly by enemies. The drop rate can be increased by equipping the Ghost soul (Enchant) or by having higher LCK (Luck) stat. Experiment with different soul combinations to find what suits your playstyle and the challenges of specific areas or bosses. Collecting multiple copies of the same soul can sometimes upgrade its power or effect.
