The Abyss
Welcome to The Abyss, a challenging and often confusing area that serves as the final dungeon in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. This guide will help you navigate its treacherous paths, defeat its formidable enemies, and uncover its hidden secrets. Be prepared for a gauntlet of powerful foes and intricate platforming.
Entering The Abyss
To access The Abyss, you must first have defeated all the previous bosses and obtained the three souls required to break the seal: the Paranoia Soul (from Paranoia in the Condemned Tower), the Malacoda Soul (from Malacoda in the Demon Guest House), and the Gergoth Soul (from Gergoth in the Cursed Clock Tower). Once you have these, head to the large, sealed door in the bottom-right of the Wizardry Lab. The seal will break, granting you access to The Abyss.
Navigating The Abyss
The Abyss is characterized by its verticality and numerous teleporters. It's easy to get lost, so pay close attention to the map and the following instructions.
Initial Descent and First Teleporter
- Upon entering, you'll find yourself in a long, vertical shaft. Descend, dealing with the various enemies like the Succubus and Great Armor.
- At the very bottom, you'll find a save room to your left. Use it!
- To the right of the save room is a teleporter. Take it.
The Shifting Corridors
The teleporter will take you to a new section. This area is a maze of interconnected rooms with multiple exits. Your goal is to reach the next teleporter.
- From where you arrive, head right. You'll encounter Erinys and Flame Demon enemies.
- Continue right through several rooms, dropping down ledges.
- You'll eventually reach a room with a large gap and a platform moving up and down. Use the Puppet Master Soul to cross this gap by grabbing the platform.
- In the next room, you'll find another teleporter. Take it.
The Vertical Gauntlet
This teleporter leads to a long, vertical climb filled with dangerous enemies and environmental hazards.
- Ascend this shaft, being wary of Iron Golems and Final Guards.
- Midway up, you'll find a small alcove to the left containing a valuable item: the Claimh Solais sword. This is an excellent weapon for the upcoming challenges.
- Continue your ascent. At the very top, you'll find a room to your right with a second save point. Do not skip this!
- To the left of the save point is another teleporter. Use it.
The Final Approach
You're now on the home stretch. This section has fewer teleporters but more challenging enemies.
- From the teleporter, head left. You'll encounter Death, a powerful enemy that can be a real threat. Be prepared for a tough fight.
- Continue left, navigating through rooms with Malachi and more Final Guards.
- You'll eventually reach a long, horizontal corridor. At the end of this corridor is the final boss room.
Boss Battle: Menace
Menace is the final boss of The Abyss and a true test of your skills. Here's a breakdown of the fight:
Phase 1: The Head
- Menace starts as a giant head. Its primary attacks include spitting fireballs, summoning smaller demon heads, and a powerful laser beam.
- Focus your attacks on its head. The Claimh Solais or a strong magic soul like Balore or Gergoth can be very effective.
- Dodge the fireballs by jumping or sliding. The laser beam requires precise timing to avoid; it sweeps across the screen.
- When it summons smaller heads, prioritize destroying them as they can quickly overwhelm you.
Phase 2: The Body
- Once the head is defeated, Menace's body will emerge. This phase is more about avoiding its massive limbs and attacking its core.
- Menace will slam its fists down, creating shockwaves, and sweep its arms across the arena.
- The key here is to find openings to attack the glowing core in its chest. When its arms are raised, you can often get a few hits in.
- Be patient and prioritize survival. This phase can be long and grueling.
Upon defeating Menace, congratulations! You've conquered The Abyss and completed the main story of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow.
