This classic NES title is notorious for its cryptic clues and challenging gameplay, but fear not – with this guide, you'll navigate Transylvania, defeat Dracula's minions, and ultimately put an end to the curse plaguing Simon Belmont.
This guide is structured to provide a clear, step-by-step walkthrough, ensuring you find every essential item, overcome every obstacle, and understand the game's sometimes obscure mechanics. We'll cover everything from your initial steps in Jova to the final confrontation with Dracula himself.
Initial Steps: Jova and the First Orb
Your adventure begins in the town of Jova. Upon starting, Simon will be equipped with his trusty Leather Whip and 10 Hearts. Hearts serve as both currency and ammunition for sub-weapons, so manage them wisely.
- Explore Jova:
- Immediately head right from your starting position.
- Enter the first building you encounter. This is a shop.
- Inside the shop, purchase the White Crystal for 50 Hearts. This item is crucial for later progression.
- If you have enough hearts, consider buying the Oak Stake for 50 Hearts as well. While not immediately necessary, stakes are vital for destroying Dracula's body parts later.
- Gathering Hearts and Experience:
- Exit Jova to the right. You'll enter the first outdoor area.
- Defeat the various enemies (Zombies, Skeletons) to collect hearts and gain experience. Experience points are represented by the small white orbs dropped by enemies. Accumulating enough experience will level up Simon, increasing his maximum health and whip power.
- Be mindful of the day/night cycle. At night, enemies become stronger and more aggressive, but they also drop more experience and hearts.
- Locating the First Dracula's Rib:
- Continue heading right through the outdoor area until you reach the next town, Veros.
- In Veros, locate the church. Inside, speak to the villagers until one provides a cryptic clue about a hidden item.
- Exit Veros to the right and proceed into the next outdoor area.
- You will soon come across a section with a large, decaying tree. Stand directly in front of this tree and use your White Crystal (select it from your inventory and press B).
- A hidden platform will appear, leading you to a secret area. Navigate this area carefully, defeating any enemies.
- At the end of this secret path, you will find the Dracula's Rib. This is the first of five body parts you need to collect.
With Dracula's Rib in hand, you've taken your first significant step towards breaking the curse. Remember to save your progress frequently by entering and exiting towns or churches. Good luck, Simon!
