Item Locations (Non-Key Items)
Beyond the essential Dracula's Remains, there are numerous other items scattered across Transylvania that will aid Simon in his quest. These non-key items include sub-weapons, defensive gear, and consumables. Mastering their locations and uses is crucial for survival.
Sub-Weapons
Sub-weapons consume hearts when used but offer powerful offensive or utility options. Always keep a healthy supply of hearts for these invaluable tools. Note that prices can sometimes vary slightly based on the specific merchant or game version, but the general locations remain consistent.
- Dagger:
- Location: This is often the first sub-weapon you'll encounter. You can purchase it from the merchant in the first town (Jova) for 50 hearts.
- Strategy: A fast, straight-flying projectile. Excellent for dealing with smaller, faster enemies or enemies at a distance. It's a good default choice for early game combat. It's inexpensive to use, making it a reliable option when conserving hearts.
- Axe:
- Location: Found for sale in the town of Veros, typically priced at 100 hearts.
- Strategy: Throws an axe in an arc. This is incredibly useful for hitting enemies above Simon or those on ledges. Practice its trajectory to master its effectiveness against flying creatures like Bats and Medusa Heads. It consumes more hearts than the Dagger but offers unique vertical coverage.
- Holy Water:
- Location: Available for purchase in the town of Jova for 50 hearts. Look for the merchant in the eastern part of town.
- Strategy: Throws a vial that shatters on the ground, creating a small flame that damages enemies. Effective against ground-based enemies and those that move slowly. It can also hit enemies multiple times if they remain in the flame, making it excellent for area denial or damaging stationary targets.
- Cross (Boomerang):
- Location: This powerful sub-weapon is not purchased, but rather found. You will discover it in the Deborah Cliff area. Specifically, after entering the Deborah Cliff region, navigate through the initial screens until you reach an area with a series of platforms and flying enemies. The Cross is usually found hidden within a breakable block or a specific treasure chest in this section.
- Strategy: A powerful boomerang-like projectile that flies forward and then returns to Simon. It hits enemies on both its outward and inward journey, making it devastating against larger, slower enemies or bosses. Master its return path to maximize damage. It consumes a significant amount of hearts per use, so reserve it for tougher encounters.
Defensive and Utility Items
These items provide protection, healing, or other beneficial effects, often making difficult sections much more manageable. Stocking up on these can turn the tide in challenging areas.
- Oak Stake:
- Location: The Oak Stake is a crucial item for progression. You will find your first Oak Stake in a mansion located west of Jova. After acquiring it, additional Oak Stakes can be purchased from various Item Shops throughout Transylvania for 50 hearts each.
- Strategy: The Oak Stake has two primary uses:
- Destroying Orbs: It is absolutely essential for destroying the Orbs that protect Dracula's body parts. When you encounter an Orb, equip the Oak Stake and use it to shatter the Orb, revealing the relic.
- Opening Hidden Paths: Equip the Oak Stake and use it on suspicious blocks or walls. If a block shatters, it reveals a hidden path, a secret room, or an item. If it doesn't, it's not the right spot. Always carry at least one, and ideally several, as they are consumed upon use for both purposes.
- Laurel:
- Location: Sold in most towns for 50 hearts. You'll find it readily available from merchants.
- Strategy: When used, Laurel grants temporary invincibility. This is invaluable for passing through areas with dense enemy populations, avoiding damage from bosses, or traversing hazardous terrain like swamps without taking damage. Stock up on these before entering particularly dangerous zones, especially before boss encounters or areas with high environmental damage.
- Garlic:
- Location: Available for purchase in many towns for 50 hearts. Check various Item Shops.
- Strategy: When used, Garlic creates a temporary protective barrier around Simon that damages enemies that come into contact with it. It's excellent for clearing out swarms of weaker enemies or providing a brief respite in crowded areas. It's particularly useful against enemies that move slowly or are easily trapped within its radius.
- White Crystal:
- Location: Found in the town of Jova, sold for 50 hearts. Look for a merchant who specializes in magical items.
- Strategy: This item is used to reveal hidden platforms or pathways in specific locations. If you're stuck and suspect a hidden route, especially in early-game areas, try using the White Crystal. It often reveals invisible blocks that allow you to cross gaps or reach higher ledges.
- Blue Crystal:
- Location: Purchased in the town of Veros for 100 hearts. This is typically found with merchants in mid-game towns.
- Strategy: Similar to the White Crystal, the Blue Crystal reveals different types of hidden pathways, often in more advanced areas or those requiring more complex navigation. If the White Crystal doesn't work, the Blue Crystal might be the key to unlocking the path forward.
- Red Crystal:
- Location: Found in the town of Aldora, sold for 150 hearts. This is usually available in later-game towns.
- Strategy: The Red Crystal is the most powerful of the crystals, revealing the most obscure and crucial hidden paths. You'll need this for late-game progression, particularly for accessing areas that lead to Dracula's final resting place or other significant secrets. If all other crystals fail, the Red Crystal is your last resort for uncovering hidden routes.
Whip Upgrades
Simon's trusty whip can be upgraded to increase its power and range. These are permanent improvements and are essential for dealing with tougher enemies and bosses. Prioritize these purchases as soon as you have the hearts.
- Thorn Whip:
- Location: The first whip upgrade. You can purchase it from a merchant in the town of Jova for 100 hearts. This is often one of the first major purchases you'll make.
- Strategy: This upgrade significantly increases the whip's damage output compared to the starting Leather Whip, making early-game enemies much easier to dispatch. Prioritize this purchase as soon as you can afford it, as it will make combat much more manageable.
- Chain Whip:
- Location: The second whip upgrade. Found for sale in the town of Veros for 200 hearts. You'll typically encounter this upgrade after progressing through the first few areas.
- Strategy: Further increases whip damage and slightly extends its reach. This is a significant power boost and will help you against the more resilient creatures you'll encounter in mid-game areas. The extended reach is particularly useful for keeping dangerous enemies at a safer distance.
- Flame Whip:
- Location: The ultimate whip upgrade. Purchase it from a merchant in the town of Aldora for 300 hearts. This is usually available in the later stages of the game.
- Strategy: The Flame Whip is the strongest whip in the game, dealing massive damage. It's crucial for efficiently defeating bosses and surviving the later stages of your quest, where enemies have much higher health pools. Save up for this as soon as possible; it will make the final confrontations significantly easier.
