Game World & Locations
Welcome, brave adventurer, to the cursed land of Castlevania II: Simon's Quest! This guide will navigate you through the treacherous regions of Transylvania, pointing out crucial items and strategies to aid Simon Belmont in his quest to reassemble Dracula's remains and lift the curse.
Jova Town
Your perilous journey begins in the seemingly peaceful Jova Town. This serves as your initial hub, offering vital resources and information for early game progression.
- Starting Point: Simon awakens here, cursed and with only his basic Leather Whip. Your immediate priorities are to gather information, acquire essential items, and understand your quest.
- Villager Dialogue: Speak to every villager you encounter. While some hints are cryptic, others are crucial for understanding your objectives, the locations of mansions, and how to use key items. Pay close attention to mentions of "graveyards," "mansions," "lakes," and the importance of specific days.
- Merchant: To your left, you'll find a merchant.
- Purchase: The most critical early purchase is the Oak Stake for 50 Hearts. This item is indispensable for progressing through the game, particularly for revealing the Orbs within mansions.
- Optional Purchase: You can also purchase Holy Water for 50 Hearts. This sub-weapon is excellent for crowd control and damaging enemies, especially those vulnerable to fire.
- Whip Note: Simon starts with the Leather Whip. The first whip upgrade, the Thorn Whip, is typically found in Berkeley Mansion, not purchased here.
- Exit: Head right from Jova Town to enter the first overworld area, leading towards Berkeley Mansion.
Jova Woods & East Jova
Beyond Jova Town lies a forested region leading to the eastern parts of the map. This area serves as an introduction to the game's combat and day/night cycle.
- Enemies: Expect to encounter basic enemies such as Zombies and Bats during the day. At night, these enemies are replaced by stronger, more aggressive versions like Wolfmen, and their attacks deal more damage. Practice your whip timing and learn to manage the day/night transitions.
- Hidden Items: The overworld is littered with hidden items. Strike every suspicious block, tree, or wall. In this area, a hidden Heart Container (increases maximum Hearts, which act as currency) can often be found in a tree stump near the eastern exit.
- Route to Berkeley Woods: Continue heading east through this area. You'll eventually reach a transition to the Berkeley Woods, which house the first mansion.
Berkeley Woods & Berkeley Mansion (First Mansion)
The Berkeley Woods are denser and more dangerous than Jova Woods, marking your approach to the first of Dracula's five body parts. Your primary goal here is to locate and conquer Berkeley Mansion.
- Enemies: Werewolves and Ghosts become more prevalent here, especially at night. Nightfall significantly increases enemy difficulty, damage output, and the number of enemies on screen. Be prepared to retreat to a town if night falls and you're low on health or hearts.
- Berkeley Mansion Entrance: The entrance to Berkeley Mansion is located deep within the woods. Look for a large, imposing structure. Unlike later mansions, the entrance to Berkeley Mansion is typically straightforward and does not require an Oak Stake to reveal the path forward. Simply walk into the entrance.
- Inside Berkeley Mansion:
- Layout: This mansion is a labyrinth of corridors and rooms. Be prepared for a significant increase in enemy density and complexity compared to the overworld.
- Key Item: Your primary objective here is to find Dracula's Rib. This relic is not guarded by a boss in the traditional sense, but rather revealed by a specific interaction.
- Acquisition of Dracula's Rib: Navigate through the mansion until you find a room containing a large, glowing Orb. To obtain Dracula's Rib, you must use an Oak Stake on this Orb. This will shatter the Orb and reveal Dracula's Rib.
- Whip Upgrade: Berkeley Mansion is also where you will find your first whip upgrade: the Thorn Whip. This is typically located in a specific room or hidden behind a breakable block. The Thorn Whip deals more damage than the Leather Whip.
- Strategy: The Holy Water sub-weapon is incredibly effective against many of the mansion's inhabitants, especially the Mummies and Ghosts. Conserve your hearts for purchasing more if needed.
- Common Pitfalls: Watch out for crumbling platforms and hidden enemies. Explore every path to ensure you don't miss the Thorn Whip or the Orb.
Town of Ondol
After acquiring Dracula's Rib, your next destination is often the Town of Ondol, located further west from Jova Town. This town offers more advanced equipment and crucial hints.
- Access: From Jova Town, head west. You'll traverse a different section of the overworld, potentially encountering new enemy types.
- Merchant: Ondol boasts a merchant who sells more advanced equipment.
- Recommended Purchase: Consider purchasing the Chain Whip for 150 Hearts if you have enough. This is a significant damage upgrade.
- Sub-Weapon Options: The merchant may also sell the Sacred Flame sub-weapon for 100 Hearts. This is an excellent sub-weapon for dealing with flying enemies and bosses due to its area-of-effect and sustained damage.
- Information: Villagers here might hint at the location of the next mansion (often the Cemetery of Aljiba) or the need for specific items to progress, such as the importance of the Diamond.
Cemetery of Aljiba & Aljiba Mansion (Second Mansion)
The Cemetery of Aljiba is a grim and challenging area, leading to the second mansion. This area introduces more complex platforming and stronger enemies.
- Enemies: Expect a high concentration of Skeletons, Ghosts, and possibly Mummies. The cemetery environment often features crumbling platforms and pitfalls, requiring careful movement.
- Aljiba Mansion Entrance: Similar to Berkeley Mansion, the entrance to Aljiba Mansion is typically found by navigating through the cemetery. You will need to locate the mansion structure. An Oak Stake is NOT used to reveal the entrance itself, but rather to reveal the Orb inside.
- Inside Aljiba Mansion:
- Key Item: Your goal is to retrieve Dracula's Heart. This mansion is typically more complex than Berkeley, with more intricate layouts and stronger enemies.
- Acquisition of Dracula's Heart: As with the Rib, you must locate a glowing Orb within the mansion and use an Oak Stake on it to reveal Dracula's Heart.
- Sub-Weapon Recommendation: The Sacred Flame is particularly useful in this mansion due to its area-of-effect damage, especially against groups of enemies.
- Whip Upgrade: You might find the Flame Whip (or Morning Star Whip, depending on the version) here, a powerful upgrade that deals fire damage.
- Common Pitfalls: Be wary of enemies that can knock you into pits or off platforms. Stock up on Laurels if you encounter enemies that inflict poison.
Debtera Woods & Debtera Mansion (Third Mansion)
Continuing your journey, the Debtera Woods lead to the third mansion. This area often features more treacherous terrain and environmental hazards.
- Navigation: This area can be confusing due to its dense foliage and winding paths. Pay attention to the map and look for distinct landmarks. Some areas may require specific jumps or knowledge of hidden passages.
- Debtera Mansion Entrance: Locate the mansion structure within the Debtera Woods. Again, the Oak Stake is for the Orb inside, not the entrance itself.
- Inside Debtera Mansion:
- Key Item: Here you will find Dracula's Eye. This mansion often features unique environmental hazards, such as rising water, collapsing floors, or rooms that require specific sub-weapon usage to navigate.
- Acquisition of Dracula's Eye: Locate the glowing Orb within the mansion and use an Oak Stake on it to reveal Dracula's Eye.
- Strategy: Consider having a good supply of Laurels to cure poison, as some enemies in this mansion (e.g., Medusa Heads, Flea Men) inflict it. The Cross sub-weapon can be very effective in clearing paths.
- Whip Upgrade: The Diamond Whip (or Vampire Killer Whip) may be found here, offering a significant power boost.
Laruba Mansion (Fourth Mansion)
The fourth mansion, Laruba Mansion, is often found in a more remote or difficult-to-reach area, requiring careful exploration and possibly specific items to access its vicinity.
- Access: You may need to use specific items (like the Diamond at a lake to reveal a path) or find hidden passages to reach this location. Villager hints about "lakes" and "diamonds" are often related to reaching this mansion or the final castle.
- Inside Laruba Mansion:
- Key Item: Your objective is Dracula's Nail. This mansion typically presents a significant challenge in terms of enemy strength, environmental puzzles, and potentially more complex platforming sections.
- Acquisition of Dracula's Nail: Locate the glowing Orb within the mansion and use an Oak Stake on it to reveal Dracula's Nail.
- Recommendation: Ensure you have the strongest whip available (e.g., Flame Whip or Diamond Whip) and a full stock of your preferred sub-weapon. The Magic Crystal sub-weapon, if acquired, can be useful for revealing hidden blocks or paths.
Bodley Mansion (Fifth Mansion)
The final mansion, Bodley Mansion, holds the last piece of Dracula. This is often the most challenging mansion to locate and traverse.
- Location: This mansion is usually the most difficult to find, often requiring a specific sequence of actions or a well-hidden entrance. Villager hints will be paramount in pinpointing its location. It might be located in a remote cave system or require traversing a particularly dangerous overworld section.
- Inside Bodley Mansion:
- Key Item: Here lies Dracula's Ring. This mansion is the ultimate test before facing Dracula himself. Expect the toughest enemies, most complex layout, and potentially unique traps or environmental challenges.
- Acquisition of Dracula's Ring: Locate the glowing Orb within the mansion and use an Oak Stake on it to reveal Dracula's Ring.
- Preparation: Stock up on all healing items (Laurels for poison, Garlic for healing if available), and a large supply of hearts for sub-weapons. Ensure your whip is fully upgraded.
Dracula's Castle (Final Destination)
Once you have collected all five of Dracula's body parts (Rib, Heart, Eye, Nail, Ring), you must proceed to the final confrontation. The entrance to Dracula's Castle is typically revealed after acquiring the last relic or by performing a specific action in a designated location.
- Entrance: The method to enter Dracula's Castle is often a puzzle in itself. Pay close attention to villager hints about "lakes" or "sacrifices." The most common method involves using the Diamond item at a specific body of water (often a lake near the final mansion or a specific screen in the overworld) to reveal the entrance to the castle. This usually happens at night.
- Final Gauntlet: Dracula's Castle is a linear path filled with the strongest enemies in the game. There are no merchants inside, so come prepared with all necessary items and a full stock of hearts. Expect multiple screens of challenging enemies and platforming.
- Dracula: The final battle awaits. Upon reaching the end of the castle, you will face Dracula. Utilize all your skills, sub-weapons, and collected items to defeat the Lord of Darkness once and for all and break the curse on Simon Belmont. The battle against Dracula typically involves multiple forms, each with distinct attack patterns.
