Hearts are the lifeblood of Castlevania II, serving as both currency for items and ammunition for sub-weapons. Efficient heart management is crucial.

- Prioritize Purchases: Always prioritize whip upgrades and the Sacred Flame. These offer the most significant return on investment.
- Early Game Grinding (Jova/Berkeley Mansion): The areas immediately around Jova and inside Berkeley Mansion are excellent for early heart farming. Zombies and Skeletons drop hearts frequently. Repeat these areas until you can afford the Leather Whip and Sacred Flame.
- Mid-Game Grinding (Forests/Swamps): As you progress, the forest and swamp areas between towns will offer stronger enemies that drop more hearts. Werewolves (at night) and Axe Knights are good targets.
- Nighttime Bonus: Enemies at night are tougher but often drop more hearts. If you're confident, grinding at night can be more efficient.
- Don't Waste Hearts: Avoid using sub-weapons unnecessarily. Save your Sacred Flame for tougher enemies and bosses.
A common strategy is to clear an area of enemies, collect hearts, leave the screen, and then re-enter to respawn the enemies, allowing for continuous farming. This is essential for affording the more expensive late-game upgrades.
