Alucard (Boss Fight & Recruitment)
Alucard, the Dhampir son of Dracula, is a pivotal character in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Unlike other bosses, defeating Alucard isn't about outright destruction, but rather freeing him from his father's dark influence. Once "defeated," he will offer his services and join Trevor Belmont's party, significantly expanding your strategic options.
Location & Prerequisites
Alucard is encountered as a mini-boss in Stage 4: Curse of the Sea. To reach him, you must first choose the upper path at the Stage 3 fork (leading from Stage 3: Pirate Ship), which takes you to Stage 4. This decision is crucial, as choosing the lower path at the Stage 3 fork will lead you to Stage 3-B: Clock Tower, where you would recruit Sypha Belnades instead.
- Stage: Stage 4 (Curse of the Sea)
- Path Choice: At the Stage 3 (Pirate Ship) fork, choose the upper path. This leads to Stage 4, where Alucard awaits.
- Prerequisite: Successfully navigate the treacherous waters and enemy gauntlet of Stage 3: Pirate Ship and the initial sections of Stage 4.
Alucard's Attack Patterns
Alucard employs a distinct two-phase attack pattern, switching between his human and bat forms. Understanding these patterns is key to victory.
Human Form
- Projectile Spread: Alucard stands his ground and fires three dark projectiles in a wide spread pattern. These projectiles are relatively slow-moving but cover a significant area.
- Movement: He moves slowly across the screen, often pausing to unleash his projectile attack.
- Vulnerability: Highly vulnerable in this form, but his projectiles can be tricky to dodge without proper timing.
Bat Form
- Erratic Flight: Alucard transforms into a large bat and flies erratically around the room. His movements are unpredictable, making him harder to hit consistently.
- Collision Damage: While in bat form, he will attempt to collide with Trevor, dealing damage upon contact.
- Vulnerability: Still takes damage, but his erratic movement makes precise hits challenging.
Recommended Loadout & Sub-Weapons
While Trevor's whip is always reliable, certain sub-weapons and companion abilities can make this fight significantly easier. At this point in the game, you may have recruited Grant Danasty from Stage 2-A or Sypha Belnades from Stage 3-B (if you took that path instead of the one to Alucard). However, if you are fighting Alucard, you will have taken the path from Stage 3 (Pirate Ship) to Stage 4, meaning your only potential companion at this point is Grant Danasty.
Trevor Belmont
- Primary Weapon: Vampire Killer Whip (upgraded to Chain Whip if possible).
- Recommended Sub-Weapons:
- Cross (Boomerang): Extremely effective. When thrown, it travels across the screen and returns, hitting Alucard multiple times, especially potent when he's in bat form. Can clear his projectiles.
- Holy Water: If Alucard lands in the flame left by Holy Water, it can deal continuous damage. Good for area denial and punishing his ground movements.
- Axe: Can hit Alucard when he's airborne in bat form, but its arc makes it less reliable than the Cross.
Companion Grant Danasty (If recruited)
If you chose the upper path at the Stage 2 fork (leading to Stage 2-A: Forest of Monsters) and recruited Grant, he can be incredibly useful in this fight due to his agility and rapid dagger attacks.
- Primary Weapon: Dagger (fast, short-range attack).
- Special Ability: Wall Climb (allows him to scale walls and ceilings, useful for dodging and positioning).
- Recommended Sub-Weapons:
- Dagger: Grant's default sub-weapon. While not ideal for range, its rapid fire can be useful for quick bursts of damage when Alucard is close or stationary.
- Axe: Grant can throw axes at a faster rate than Trevor, making them more effective for hitting Alucard in bat form.
- Strategy: Switch to Grant for his superior mobility to dodge Alucard's projectiles and bat form. Use his fast dagger attacks when Alucard is in human form and close. His wall climb can also help you get to advantageous positions or avoid ground-based attacks.
Companion Sypha Belnades (Not applicable for this path)
Sypha cannot be recruited if you are fighting Alucard. Recruiting Sypha requires taking the path from Stage 3 (Pirate Ship) to Stage 3-B (Clock Tower), which is mutually exclusive with the path to Alucard in Stage 4.
Strategy & Tactics
The key to "defeating" Alucard lies in consistent damage output while skillfully dodging his attacks. Patience is a virtue here.
- Initial Engagement: Alucard will usually start in his human form. He'll walk towards you and fire his three-way projectile spread.
- Dodging Projectiles:
- Trevor: Position yourself between the projectiles. The middle projectile is often the easiest to avoid by standing directly in front of Alucard and then moving slightly to the side as he fires.
- Grant: Use Grant's superior jump and wall climb to quickly maneuver around projectiles. His smaller hitbox can also be an advantage.
- Attacking Human Form:
- Trevor: Get close and whip him repeatedly. If you have the Cross, throw it to hit him multiple times. Holy Water can also be effective if he walks into it.
- Grant: Use his fast dagger attacks when Alucard is within range. If you have an Axe, Grant can throw them quickly for decent damage.
- Bat Form Transition: After taking some damage, Alucard will transform into his bat form. He will fly erratically around the screen, attempting to collide with you.
- Attacking Bat Form:
- Trevor: This is where the Cross shines. Throw it, and its boomerang effect will often hit Alucard multiple times as he flies. Otherwise, time your whip swings carefully to hit him during his unpredictable flight path.
- Grant: Use Axes if you have them, as Grant can throw them rapidly. Otherwise, try to position yourself for quick dagger hits when Alucard swoops low, or use his wall climb to get above him for downward dagger attacks.
- Repeat & Persist: Alucard will alternate between his human and bat forms. Continue to dodge his attacks and land hits whenever possible. There's no specific "trick" beyond consistent damage.
- "Defeat" and Recruitment: Once Alucard has taken enough damage, he will revert to his human form, cease attacking, and a dialogue box will appear. He will acknowledge Trevor's strength and offer to join your party.
Common Pitfalls & Tips
- Don't Rush: Alucard's erratic bat form can be frustrating. Don't get impatient and take unnecessary risks.
- Conserve Hearts: While not a traditional boss, you'll want hearts for your sub-weapons, especially the Cross.
- Health Management: Keep an eye on your health. If you're low, try to play defensively and only attack when safe.
- Companion Switching: If you have Grant, remember to switch between characters to maximize your damage output and defensive capabilities. Trevor for range and whip, Grant for agility and rapid close-range attacks.
- Platforming Awareness: The battle arena in Stage 4 often has varying platforms. Use these to your advantage for dodging or positioning for attacks.
Reward: Alucard Joins Your Party!
Upon his "defeat," Alucard will join Trevor as a playable companion. This is a significant advantage, as Alucard offers unique abilities:
- Primary Attack: Fires two fireballs in a spread pattern. These projectiles are excellent for clearing enemies from a distance and hitting multiple targets.
- Special Ability: Can transform into a bat, allowing him to fly over obstacles and enemies for a short duration (consumes hearts). This is invaluable for exploring, bypassing difficult sections, and reaching hidden areas.
- Stats: Generally has higher defense than Sypha or Grant, making him quite resilient.
Recruiting Alucard opens up new strategic possibilities for the remainder of your journey through Dracula's Castle, making subsequent stages potentially easier to navigate and conquer, especially with his unique bat transformation ability.
