Power-up Locations & Effects
Mastering the use of power-ups is crucial for Trevor Belmont and his companions to conquer Dracula's Curse. These items, often hidden within candles or dropped by defeated enemies, provide essential advantages in combat and traversal. Knowing where to find them and how to best use their effects can turn the tide of battle.
Whip Upgrades
- Morning Star Whip: This is Trevor's primary weapon upgrade.
- Effect: Increases the length and power of Trevor's Vampire Killer whip. Each upgrade makes the whip longer and deals more damage. There are two stages of this upgrade.
- Location & Strategy:
- Stage 1: Often found in the early stages of the game, such as the first few screens of Stage 1 (Warakiya). Look for candles in prominent positions. For example, after defeating the first few Bat enemies, a candle on a raised platform often contains the first Morning Star.
- Stage 2: Typically appears in later stages or after significant progress within a level. In Stage 2 (Forest of Silence), after navigating the initial swampy area and defeating the Axe Armor, check the candles leading up to the first boss encounter.
- Important Note: Taking damage will revert your whip to its previous stage. If you have the fully upgraded whip and take a hit, it will become the first upgrade stage. If you have the first upgrade stage and take a hit, it will revert to the basic leather whip. Prioritize avoiding damage to maintain your whip's power.
Sub-Weapons
Sub-weapons consume hearts when used, but offer specialized attacks that can be invaluable against certain enemies and bosses. Each character has a unique proficiency with specific sub-weapons, making character switching a strategic element.
- Axe:
- Effect: Thrown in an arc, the Axe is excellent for hitting enemies above Trevor or those with high vertical hitboxes. It can also hit enemies through certain obstacles.
- Location & Strategy: Frequently found in candles throughout many stages. In Stage 1 (Warakiya), after crossing the first bridge, several candles in the subsequent area often contain Axes. It's particularly useful against flying enemies or bosses like the Cyclops.
- Holy Water:
- Effect: Thrown in an arc, it creates a small pillar of flame upon impact with the ground, damaging enemies that pass through it. Effective against ground-based enemies and bosses that stay low.
- Location & Strategy: Common in candles, especially in stages with many ground-level enemies. In Stage 2 (Forest of Silence), before entering the cave section, several candles along the path can yield Holy Water. It's a strong choice against the Mummy Man boss.
- Boomerang (Cross):
- Effect: Thrown forward, it returns to Trevor after a short distance, hitting enemies on both its outward and inward trajectory. Deals significant damage and can hit multiple times.
- Location & Strategy: A highly sought-after sub-weapon. Often found in candles in more challenging sections. In Stage 3 (Sunken City of Poltergeists), after the initial underwater section, look for candles on the platforms. It's arguably the most versatile sub-weapon for Trevor and Grant.
- Stopwatch:
- Effect: Freezes all non-boss enemies on screen for a short duration, allowing Trevor to pass safely or land free hits. Consumes a large number of hearts.
- Location & Strategy: Less common than other sub-weapons, often found in candles in areas with dense enemy populations. In Stage 4 (Haunted Ship of Fools), within the ship's interior, candles can sometimes drop the Stopwatch. Best saved for situations where you need to bypass a difficult enemy formation or escape a tight spot.
Support Items
- Small Heart:
- Effect: Restores 1 heart to your sub-weapon heart count.
- Location & Strategy: Dropped by almost all defeated enemies and found in many candles. Essential for keeping your sub-weapons fueled. Always try to collect these.
- Large Heart:
- Effect: Restores 5 hearts to your sub-weapon heart count.
- Location & Strategy: Less common than small hearts, but still frequently found in candles and occasionally dropped by stronger enemies. Prioritize collecting these to ensure you have enough hearts for powerful sub-weapon attacks.
- Money Bag (100, 400, 700 points):
- Effect: Awards points towards your score. While not directly impacting gameplay, a high score can unlock certain game-ending sequences or simply serve as bragging rights.
- Location & Strategy: Found in candles and sometimes dropped by enemies. The value (100, 400, or 700) is indicated by its color. Always collect these for score accumulation.
- Rosary:
- Effect: Destroys all non-boss enemies currently on screen. Extremely useful for clearing a crowded screen or getting out of a tight spot.
- Location & Strategy: Rare, typically found in specific candles in challenging areas. In Stage 5 (Clock Tower), within the intricate gear mechanisms, a Rosary can sometimes be found, offering a momentary reprieve from the relentless enemies.
- Invincibility Potion (Cross):
- Effect: Grants temporary invincibility, allowing Trevor to pass through enemies without taking damage.
- Location & Strategy: Very rare. Often found in candles just before a difficult boss fight or a particularly treacherous section. For example, in Stage 6 (Dracula's Castle Entrance), a potion might appear before facing a particularly tough mini-boss. Use it wisely to rush past obstacles or deal free damage to bosses.
- Double Shot / Triple Shot:
- Effect: Allows Trevor to throw two or three sub-weapons simultaneously, significantly increasing damage output. This is a game-changer for boss fights.
- Location & Strategy: These are rare and incredibly valuable.
- Double Shot: Often found in candles in mid-game stages. In Stage 4 (Haunted Ship of Fools), after navigating the initial deck, a candle inside the ship can sometimes contain this.
- Triple Shot: Extremely rare, usually found in later, more difficult stages. In Stage 7 (Underground Mines), deep within the mine shafts, a Triple Shot might be hidden in a candle. Once acquired, try to preserve it as long as possible, as it makes many boss encounters much easier.
