Stage 5: Castle Keep & Clock Tower
Welcome, brave adventurer, to the heart of Dracula's domain! Stage 5 thrusts you into the perilous Castle Keep, a gauntlet of Dracula's most formidable guardians, before culminating in the dizzying heights and intricate mechanisms of the Clock Tower. This stage is a true test of your platforming prowess and combat strategy, demanding precision and quick reflexes.
Castle Keep Walkthrough
The Castle Keep is a multi-layered area featuring both vertical and horizontal progression, often requiring careful jumps and strategic enemy engagement. Expect to encounter a higher density of stronger enemies here.
Initial Ascent & Enemy Encounters
- Starting Area: You'll begin in a relatively open area. Immediately prepare for Bone Pillars (flame-spitting skulls) and Fleamen (small, agile creatures that jump erratically). Prioritize taking out Bone Pillars from a distance.
- Staircase Gauntlet: Ascend the first set of stairs. You'll likely face a combination of Knights (slow but heavily armored, requiring multiple hits or sub-weapons) and more Fleamen. Use your whip's range to keep Knights at bay.
- Moving Platforms & Medusa Heads: The Castle Keep introduces sections with moving platforms over bottomless pits. These are often guarded by relentless Medusa Heads, which fly in a sine wave pattern. Time your jumps carefully and use your whip to clear Medusa Heads before committing to a jump. Trevor's axe sub-weapon can be particularly effective here for clearing enemies above or below.
- Hidden Passages: Keep an eye out for destructible blocks, especially in walls or ceilings. Some may hide valuable items like Hearts or even the elusive Rosary (clears all on-screen enemies).
Mid-Section Challenges
- Armored Knights & Axe Armors: Deeper into the Keep, you'll encounter more resilient foes. Axe Armors throw axes in an arc and can be very dangerous in groups or tight spaces. Try to bait their axe throws and then move in for an attack.
- Spike Traps: Certain sections feature retractable spike traps. Observe their pattern before attempting to pass. Often, a well-timed jump or a brief pause is all that's needed.
- Character Specific Paths: If you have a companion, certain paths might be easier. For instance, Syfa's magic can clear groups of enemies quickly, while Grant's wall-climbing ability can bypass some platforming challenges.
Clock Tower Walkthrough
The Clock Tower is infamous for its verticality, swinging gears, and a unique set of enemies. Precision platforming is paramount here.
Ascending the Tower
- Gear Platforms: The primary challenge of the Clock Tower is navigating the numerous swinging gears and rotating platforms. These require precise timing for jumps. Don't rush; observe the pattern of movement before attempting to cross.
- Hunchbacks & Eagles: You'll encounter many Hunchbacks (small, fast jumpers) and Eagles (carry Hunchbacks and drop them). Prioritize taking out Eagles to prevent an overwhelming number of Hunchbacks. The boomerang/cross sub-weapon is excellent for hitting flying enemies.
- Bone Dragons: These skeletal dragons fly in predictable patterns, often guarding crucial platforms. Their heads are their weak point. A well-aimed whip or sub-weapon can take them down quickly.
- Falling Blocks: Some sections feature crumbling or falling blocks. Move quickly across these, or use them strategically to reach higher ledges before they disappear.
Top of the Clock Tower & Boss Preparation
- Final Ascent: The very top of the Clock Tower often involves a series of smaller, faster-moving gears or platforms. This is where many players lose lives due to impatience.
- Item Collection: Before the boss, look for hidden item blocks or candles that drop hearts or sub-weapons. Ensure you have your preferred sub-weapon (Holy Water is often excellent for the upcoming boss) and a good supply of hearts.
Boss: Frankenstein's Monster & Igor
At the pinnacle of the Clock Tower, you'll face a classic Castlevania duo: Frankenstein's Monster and his diminutive assistant, Igor.
Boss Strategy
- Frankenstein's Monster: The larger of the two, he moves slowly but hits hard. His primary attack is a powerful punch. He is vulnerable to all attacks, but his head is a critical hit zone.
- Igor: This small, agile creature jumps around erratically and throws bottles of acid. Igor is the more immediate threat due to his unpredictable movement and projectile attacks.
Recommended Tactics:
- Prioritize Igor: Your first objective should be to eliminate Igor. His erratic movements and acid bottles can quickly chip away at your health and make it difficult to focus on Frankenstein. Use Holy Water to stun him or the Axe to hit him when he's jumping.
- Holy Water Spam: If you have Holy Water, it is incredibly effective against both enemies. Dropping it on Frankenstein's Monster will damage him repeatedly as he walks through it. It also works wonders on Igor.
- Whip & Dodge: Once Igor is down, focus on Frankenstein. Stay at a medium distance, whip his head when he approaches, and then retreat. He has a slight wind-up before his punch, giving you a small window to dodge.
- Sub-Weapon Usage:
- Holy Water: (Highly Recommended) Excellent for continuous damage and stunning.
- Axe: Good for hitting Frankenstein's head from a distance or catching Igor mid-jump.
- Boomerang/Cross: Can hit both enemies multiple times, especially useful for Igor.
- Companion Advantage:
- Syfa: Her offensive spells (especially the fire spell) can deal significant damage to both enemies, making the fight much quicker.
- Grant: His agility allows him to easily dodge attacks and climb walls to get advantageous positions for attacking Frankenstein's head.
- Alucard: His bat form can make dodging Igor's acid bottles trivial, and his fireballs can chip away at both bosses.
Common Pitfalls:
- Getting cornered: Both enemies can trap you against a wall. Always try to maintain space.
- Ignoring Igor: Letting Igor survive too long will make the fight unnecessarily difficult.
- Rushing: Patience is key. Observe their patterns and strike when safe.
