Boss Strategies (Individual)
This section provides detailed, actionable strategies for overcoming the most formidable foes in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Remember to always enter boss encounters fully stocked on Holy Water, Dark Crystal shards, and equipped with your preferred Relics.
Stone Golem
The Stone Golem is an early-game test of your combat fundamentals. This colossal enemy relies on slow, predictable attacks that deal significant damage if they connect. Your primary goal is to exploit its vulnerabilities and manage your positioning.
- Phase 1: Ground Assault
- The Golem will primarily use a sweeping arm attack and a ground pound. Both are heavily telegraphed. Dodge through the sweep with a well-timed roll (R2/RT) to get behind it.
- After a ground pound, the Golem's arm will be momentarily stuck. This is your cue to unleash a quick combo (Square/X, Square/X, Triangle/Y) on its arm.
- Periodically, the Golem will attempt to grab you. A quick dodge will avoid this. If caught, mash the indicated button to break free quickly and minimize damage.
- Focus on building your combo meter to activate Light Magic (L1/LB) for increased damage and healing, or Dark Magic (R1/RB) for raw power.
- Once enough damage is dealt to its arms, a QTE prompt will appear. Successfully complete it to transition to the next phase.
- Phase 2: Climbing and Weak Points
- After the QTE, the Golem will be stunned, and glowing weak points will appear on its body. These are usually on its back or shoulders.
- Approach the Golem and press Circle/B to initiate a climb. Navigate carefully across its stony hide, avoiding any areas that glow red, as these will damage you.
- Once you reach a weak point, repeatedly attack it with your Combat Cross. Be mindful of the Golem's attempts to shake you off. If it starts to glow red or rumble, prepare to hold R2/RT to brace yourself.
- Repeat this process for all visible weak points. You may need to dismount and re-climb if the Golem becomes too active.
- Consider using a Holy Water vial during this phase if you're having trouble reaching a weak point or need to stun it for a moment.
- Recommended Equipment:
- Relics: Fairy (for distraction), Daggers (for ranged damage on weak points if you can't climb easily).
- Sub-Weapons: Holy Water (for stunning), Dark Crystal (for emergency high damage if you're struggling).
Cornell
The Werewolf Lord, Cornell, is a fast and aggressive opponent who will test your parrying and dodging skills. His attacks are powerful, and he can close distances quickly.
- Phase 1: Humanoid Form
- Cornell starts in a more humanoid, albeit wolf-like, form. He primarily uses claw swipes and a charging attack.
- His claw swipes can often be parried (L1/LB + Square/X just before impact) for a brief opening. A successful parry will stagger him, allowing for a short combo.
- The charging attack is best avoided with a well-timed dodge (R2/RT). Try to dodge to the side or even behind him to set up a counter-attack.
- He will occasionally jump and slam the ground, creating a small shockwave. Jump to avoid the shockwave, then immediately counter-attack as he recovers.
- Maintain aggression, but prioritize defense. Do not get greedy with combos; two or three hits after an opening is usually sufficient before he retaliates.
- Once his health is reduced sufficiently, he will transform.
- Phase 2: Werewolf Form
- In his full Werewolf form, Cornell becomes even faster and more brutal. His attacks gain more range and power.
- He retains his charging attack, which is now faster. Continue to dodge this to the side.
- He gains a powerful leaping attack. This is heavily telegraphed by him crouching low. Dodge forward or to the side as he leaps.
- Cornell will also frequently use a series of rapid claw attacks. These are harder to parry consistently. Focus on dodging away or through the attacks.
- When he howls, he may summon a few smaller Lycanthropes. Deal with these quickly using area-of-effect attacks (e.g., Chain Attack with Dark Magic) or a Holy Water vial to keep the focus on Cornell.
- The key to this phase is patience. Wait for clear openings after his more committal attacks. Use Light Magic (L1/LB) to heal any damage taken, as his attacks hit hard.
- Consider using Dark Crystals when he is stunned or recovering from a major attack to deal massive burst damage.
- Recommended Equipment:
- Relics: Fairy (for distracting Lycanthropes), Stopwatch (to freeze Cornell for a few precious seconds, allowing for free combos or healing).
- Sub-Weapons: Holy Water (for crowd control against Lycanthropes or stunning Cornell), Daggers (for chipping away health from a distance if you need breathing room).
