Boss: Dullahan
The Dullahan serves as the first major boss encounter in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, guarding the exit of the City of Haze. This formidable headless knight wields a massive axe and presents a significant challenge for players new to the game's mechanics. Defeating him is crucial for progressing to the next painting and unlocking new areas.
Location and Prerequisites
- Location: City of Haze, specifically at the very end of the area, just before the warp point to the next painting.
- Access: You will naturally encounter Dullahan as you progress through the City of Haze. There are no special items or abilities required to reach him, though having a few healing items (Potions, High Potions) and a decent sub-weapon for Jonathan is highly recommended.
- Recommended Level: Players typically face Dullahan around Level 8-12. Being at the higher end of this spectrum will make the fight more manageable.
Dullahan's Abilities and Attack Patterns
Dullahan employs several attacks, primarily relying on his immense axe and, later, his detached head. Understanding his phases and attack tells is key to victory.
Phase 1: Head Attached
In his initial phase, Dullahan's head is firmly attached to his body. He will primarily use the following attacks:
- Axe Swing (Close Range): A wide, sweeping attack with his large axe. This has a decent wind-up, giving you time to react.
- Dodge Strategy: Jump over the axe swing. If you're close, you can also slide under it, but jumping is generally safer.
- Charging Attack (Mid-Long Range): Dullahan will lower his axe and charge directly across the screen. This attack is fast and covers a lot of ground.
- Dodge Strategy: Slide under him as he charges. Timing is crucial; slide too early or too late, and you'll take damage. Alternatively, if you have enough space, you can jump over him, but sliding is more reliable.
- Axe Slam (Overhead): Less frequent, Dullahan might raise his axe high and slam it down, creating a small shockwave on the ground.
- Dodge Strategy: Jump to avoid the shockwave.
Phase 2: Head Detached
After taking a significant amount of damage (approximately 30-40% of his total HP), Dullahan's head will detach from his body. This marks a significant shift in the fight, as you now have two targets to contend with. The head and body act independently.
- Body Attacks: The headless body will continue to perform the Axe Swing and Charging Attack from Phase 1. Its movement might become slightly more erratic.
- Head Attacks: The detached head will float around the upper part of the screen, firing projectiles.
- Fireball Projectiles: The head will often fire a spread of 3-5 small fireballs that travel in an arc.
- Dodge Strategy: These are relatively slow and can be dodged by moving between them or by sliding.
- Laser Beam (Rare): Occasionally, the head might charge up and fire a straight laser beam across the screen.
- Dodge Strategy: This attack is telegraphed by a brief charge-up. Move quickly out of its path.
- Fireball Projectiles: The head will often fire a spread of 3-5 small fireballs that travel in an arc.
Weaknesses and Recommended Loadout
Dullahan has specific elemental weaknesses that you can exploit to maximize your damage output.
Weaknesses:
- Holy: Both the body and head take increased damage from Holy-elemental attacks.
- Fire: The body is particularly vulnerable to Fire-elemental attacks. The head also takes increased damage, but Holy is generally more effective against it.
Recommended Loadout:
- Jonathan Morris:
- Weapon: Your strongest whip (e.g., Leather Whip, Chain Whip). The range is beneficial.
- Sub-Weapon:
- Axe: Excellent for hitting Dullahan's head when it's floating high.
- Cross: Deals Holy damage and can hit multiple times, especially effective against the head.
- Bible: Provides a continuous Holy damage field, good for hitting both targets if positioned correctly.
- Skills: Maximize your Whip skill and any passive attack-boosting skills.
- Charlotte Aulin:
- Spell:
- Fireball: Your primary damage spell for the body, exploiting its Fire weakness. Cast it frequently.
- Heal: Essential for keeping both characters alive. Assign it to a quick-access button.
- Holy Light: If you've found it, this Holy-elemental spell is very effective against both targets.
- Skills: Maximize your INT stat and any spell-boosting skills.
- Spell:
- Dual Crushes:
- Rocket Punch: If you've learned it, this Dual Crush deals massive damage and can hit both targets if they are close together.
- Thunderbolt: Another strong option, though not exploiting a direct weakness, its raw power is useful.
- Items: Stock up on Potions and High Potions. A Super Potion or two wouldn't hurt for emergencies.
Battle Strategy (Step-by-Step)
Phase 1 Strategy: Focus on the Body
- Initial Engagement: As the fight begins, Dullahan will typically be close. Position Jonathan to attack with his whip while Charlotte casts Fireball.
- Dodge and Attack:
- When Dullahan performs an Axe Swing, jump over it with Jonathan and continue whipping. Charlotte should keep casting Fireball.
- When Dullahan initiates a Charging Attack, quickly slide under him with Jonathan. Charlotte should also slide or jump to avoid damage. You can often get a few hits in as he passes by.
- Sub-Weapon Usage: Use Jonathan's Axe or Cross sub-weapons when you have a clear shot, especially if Dullahan is momentarily out of whip range or if you want to conserve MP for Charlotte.
- Maintain Distance: While you need to be close to attack with the whip, try not to get cornered. Use the entire arena to your advantage.
Phase 2 Strategy: Prioritize the Head, Manage the Body
Once Dullahan's head detaches, the fight becomes more complex. Your primary goal is to destroy the head, as it is generally squishier and removes a significant threat.
- Target the Head:
- Jonathan: Switch to your Axe sub-weapon and throw it at the floating head. The arc of the Axe is perfect for hitting it. Alternatively, if the head floats low enough, you can jump and whip it.
- Charlotte: If you have Holy Light, use it on the head. Otherwise, continue with Fireball, aiming for the head when possible, or the body if the head is out of reach.
- Body Management: The headless body will continue its attacks.
- Dodge: Continue to slide under charges and jump over axe swings. Do not neglect dodging the body's attacks, as they can still deal heavy damage.
- Opportunistic Attacks: If the body is close and the head is out of reach, get a few whip hits in on the body with Jonathan.
- Dual Crushes: This is the ideal phase to use Dual Crushes like Rocket Punch. If both the head and body are relatively close together, activating a Dual Crush can deal massive damage to both, potentially ending the fight quickly.
- Healing: If either character's HP drops below 50%, have Charlotte cast Heal. If MP is low or you need immediate healing, use a Potion.
- Keep Moving: The arena can become chaotic with two independent enemies. Continuously move, dodge, and position yourself for optimal attacks.
Common Pitfalls and Tips
- Getting Cornered: Dullahan's charge attack can push you into a corner. Always try to stay near the center of the arena or ensure you have enough space to slide.
- Ignoring the Head: In Phase 2, ignoring the head will lead to a prolonged and more dangerous fight due to its projectile attacks. Prioritize its destruction.
- Running Out of MP: Charlotte's spells are vital. If you find yourself low on MP, use a Magic Ticket or switch to physical attacks with Jonathan while Charlotte recovers.
- Under-leveled: If you're struggling significantly, consider grinding a few levels in the City of Haze. Increased HP, MP, and stats will make a noticeable difference.
- Familiarize Yourself: Don't be afraid to die a few times to learn Dullahan's attack patterns. Each attempt provides valuable insight.
Rewards
Upon successfully defeating Dullahan, you will receive:
- Experience Points (EXP): A significant amount of EXP, often enough to level up one or both characters.
- Gold: A decent sum of gold.
- Access to the Next Painting: The barrier blocking the next painting (likely "Forest of Doom" or "Sandy Grave" depending on game progression) will be removed, allowing you to continue your adventure.
- Dullahan Soul (Rare Drop): There's a small chance Dullahan will drop his soul, which can be equipped for various effects (e.g., increased defense or attack). This is not a guaranteed drop.
