Boss: Dracula (True Ending)
To face the true final boss, Dracula, you must first ensure you have met the requirements for the true ending. This involves defeating Brauner and then defeating Death and Dracula in their combined form. If you have not yet done so, revisit the Master's Keep and confront them.
This battle is a two-phase encounter, testing your mastery of both Jonathan and Charlotte. Ensure both characters are well-equipped and leveled.
Recommended Setup
- Jonathan:
- Weapon: Vampire Killer (fully upgraded if possible). Its range and holy attribute are invaluable.
- Sub-Weapon: Cross or Boomerang. The Cross offers excellent screen-clearing potential, while the Boomerang can hit multiple times.
- Armor: Equip the best defensive gear you have, prioritizing DEF and CON. The Death's Robe (found in the Master's Keep) is a strong choice.
- Accessories: Mist Robe (for increased INT and MND) or Chaos Ring (for MP regeneration) are excellent.
- Charlotte:
- Weapon: Any high-INT weapon, but her spells are your primary damage source.
- Spells:
- Thunderbolt: High damage, especially when charged.
- Heal: Absolutely essential for recovery. Make sure its level is high for maximum effectiveness.
- Summon Skeleton: Provides a distraction and some additional damage.
- Armor: Focus on INT-boosting gear like the Minerva Mail (found in the Dark Academy) and defensive pieces.
- Accessories: Artemis Shoes (for increased INT) or Mana Prism (for emergency MP recovery).
- Items: Stock up on High Potions, Super Potions, and Mana Prisms. Curry or Cream Soda can provide temporary stat boosts.
Phase 1: Dracula & Death
In this initial phase, Dracula and Death fight as a combined entity. Their attacks are powerful and cover a wide area. Your primary goal is to whittle down their shared HP while avoiding their devastating moves.
Strategy:
- Stay Mobile: This is paramount. The boss will teleport frequently and unleash various projectiles. Keep moving and be ready to dodge.
- Jonathan's Role:
- Focus on attacking with the Vampire Killer. Its range allows you to stay somewhat safe while dealing consistent damage.
- Use your sub-weapons when you have an opening, especially the Cross for its wide coverage.
- Be mindful of Dracula's teleportation. He often reappears with a close-range attack.
- Charlotte's Role:
- Primarily, Charlotte should be casting Thunderbolt (charged, if safe) for high damage.
- Keep an eye on both characters' HP. Use Heal proactively, especially if either character drops below 50% HP.
- Summoning a Skeleton can draw some aggro, giving you a brief window to attack or heal.
- Key Attacks to Watch For:
- Scythe Swipes: Death will perform wide, sweeping attacks. Jump over them or slide under.
- Fire Pillars: Dracula summons pillars of fire from the ground. Watch for the ground indicators and move quickly.
- Dark Orbs: Projectiles that home in. Dodge or destroy them with attacks.
- Combined Attack: They will occasionally combine for a powerful, screen-filling attack. This is your cue to use a Dual Crush if available, or to focus entirely on dodging.
- Dual Crushes: Save your Dual Crushes for moments when you need to deal significant damage quickly or escape a tight spot. The Greatest Five is highly effective here.
Phase 2: Dracula's True Form
After defeating the combined form, Dracula reveals his true, monstrous form. This phase is more about pattern recognition and precise dodging.
Strategy:
- Target the Head: Dracula's head is his primary weak point. All your attacks should be aimed there.
- Jonathan's Role:
- Continue using the Vampire Killer. Jump and whip at his head whenever possible.
- The Cross sub-weapon is excellent here, as it travels upwards and can hit Dracula's head multiple times.
- Be prepared to dodge his claw attacks and fire breath.
- Charlotte's Role:
- Focus on casting Thunderbolt (charged) at his head.
- Maintain healing duties for both characters.
- Consider using Acidic Bubbles if you have it, as it can deal continuous damage.
- Key Attacks to Watch For:
- Claw Swipes: Dracula will swipe with his massive claws. These are telegraphed; slide or jump to avoid.
- Fire Breath: He breathes a stream of fire across the screen. Find a safe spot between the flames or use a Dual Crush to become temporarily invincible.
- Dark Orbs/Projectiles: Similar to the first phase, but often more numerous.
- Body Slam: Dracula may rear back and slam his body down. Move to the edges of the screen to avoid the shockwave.
- Patience is Key: Dracula's true form has a large HP pool. Don't rush your attacks; prioritize dodging and survival. Chip away at his health steadily.
- Dual Crushes: Unleash your remaining Dual Crushes when Dracula is vulnerable, particularly after a major attack when he's recovering.
With persistence and careful execution of these strategies, you will defeat Dracula and achieve the true ending of Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin!
