Boss: Gergoth
Gergoth is a massive, grotesque boss found in the City of Haze. This encounter can be challenging due to its sheer size and destructive attacks, but with the right preparation and strategy, you'll emerge victorious.
Recommended Preparations
- Healing Items: Stock up on Potions, High Potions, and Super Potions. Gergoth hits hard, so having reliable healing is crucial.
- Sub-Weapons: The Axe is highly effective against Gergoth. Its arc allows you to hit its head consistently. The Cross can also be useful for consistent damage.
- Equipment: Prioritize equipment that boosts your attack power. If you have any accessories that increase defense, consider those as well.
- Character Choice: While both Jonathan and Charlotte will be active, Jonathan's whip attacks are generally more effective for close-range damage. Charlotte's offensive spells can contribute significantly, especially if you have high-level elemental spells.
Battle Strategy
Gergoth's main weakness is its head. All of your attacks should be aimed there for maximum damage. The battle takes place on a series of platforms, which you'll need to utilize to avoid its devastating attacks.
Phase 1: Ground Attacks
Initially, Gergoth will primarily use ground-based attacks. Stay on the lower platforms and focus on hitting its head.
- Stomp: Gergoth will lift one of its massive feet and slam it down, creating a shockwave. To avoid this, jump onto a higher platform or slide under its foot if you're quick.
- Bite/Head Slam: It may lunge its head forward or slam it down. These attacks are usually telegraphed by a slight wind-up. Dash or backflip away to avoid being hit.
- Acid Spit: Gergoth will occasionally spit a stream of acid across the ground. This is a good opportunity to jump onto a higher platform and continue attacking its head from above.
Phase 2: Elevated Attacks and Platform Destruction
As Gergoth takes damage, it will become more aggressive and start destroying the platforms. This is where the fight becomes more dynamic.
- Platform Smash: Gergoth will smash its head or foot onto the platforms, destroying them. When you see it wind up for this, immediately move to an intact platform. Don't get caught on a crumbling platform!
- Laser Beam: Gergoth will charge up and fire a powerful laser beam horizontally across the screen. This is its most dangerous attack.
- To avoid the laser, you must quickly drop to the lowest possible ground level or jump over it if it's aimed low. The timing can be tight, so anticipate this attack.
- If you have the "Owl" familiar, it can sometimes provide a small window of invincibility, but don't rely solely on it.
- Falling Debris: After destroying platforms, debris will fall from the ceiling. Keep an eye on the shadows on the ground to predict where they will land and move out of the way.
General Tips for Success
- Dual Crush: Use your Dual Crush attacks whenever your MP allows. The "Greatest Five" or "Thunderbolt" can deal significant burst damage.
- Charlotte's Spells: Have Charlotte cast offensive spells like "Fireball" or "Ice Needle" from a safe distance. Her spells can still hit Gergoth's head even if she's on a lower platform.
- Stay Mobile: Constant movement is key. Don't stand still for too long, especially when Gergoth is winding up an attack.
- Exploit Openings: After Gergoth completes an attack, there's usually a brief window where its head is vulnerable. Maximize your damage during these moments.
By following these strategies, you should be able to overcome Gergoth and continue your journey through the City of Haze.
