Boss: Mummy
The Mummy is the first boss you'll encounter in the Sandy Grave portrait. While not overly complex, it can be a significant challenge if you're not prepared. This guide will help you unravel its secrets and emerge victorious.
Preparation is Key
Before you even think about stepping into the boss arena, make sure you've got your gear and stats in order. A little preparation goes a long way.
- Level Up: Aim for at least Level 10-12. This will give you a good balance of HP, MP, and attack power.
- Equipment:
- Weapon: The Whip is your primary tool. If you've found any upgrades like the Leather Whip or Chain Whip, equip them.
- Sub-Weapon: The Axe is highly recommended for its arc and damage, especially against the Mummy's floating head. The Cross can also be effective for its multi-hit properties.
- Armor: Equip the best armor you have available. The Cotton Dress (for Charlotte) and Leather Plate (for Jonathan) are good early-game options.
- Consumables: Stock up on Potions and High Potions from Vincent's shop in the castle. Having a few Antidotes isn't a bad idea either, though poison isn't the Mummy's primary threat.
- Spells (Charlotte): Charlotte's Heal spell is invaluable for recovery. Make sure you have enough MP to cast it a few times. The Fireball spell can also add some extra damage.
Boss Battle Strategy
The Mummy fight consists of two main phases, though they blend seamlessly. The key is to manage the various parts of the Mummy and avoid its projectiles.
Phase 1: The Floating Head and Body
The Mummy starts as a detached head and a walking body. Your primary target here is the head, but you'll need to deal with the body's attacks.
- Focus on the Head: The Mummy's head floats around the top of the screen. This is where your Axe sub-weapon shines. Jump and throw axes to hit it. Jonathan's whip can also reach it with a well-timed jump attack.
- Body Attacks: The Mummy's body will slowly walk across the screen, occasionally stopping to launch a barrage of mummy wraps horizontally. These are fairly easy to avoid by jumping over them or ducking under them.
- Switch Characters:
- Jonathan: Use his whip to attack the body when it's close, or jump and whip the head. His Axe sub-weapon is excellent for hitting the head.
- Charlotte: Cast Fireball at the head or body, and use Heal if either character takes significant damage. Her basic attack can also contribute.
- Duo Attack: When the Mummy's head is low enough, activate your Duo Attack (press the X button). This can deal significant damage to both the head and body if positioned correctly.
- Stay Mobile: Keep moving to avoid the body's slow advance and the wrap projectiles. Don't get cornered.
Phase 2: The Reassembled Mummy
After taking enough damage, the Mummy's head will reattach to its body, forming a complete, albeit still bandaged, entity. This phase introduces new attacks.
- New Attacks:
- Mummy Wraps (Vertical): The Mummy will now launch wraps vertically, often in a spread pattern. These can be trickier to dodge, so try to find gaps or move quickly.
- Ground Pound: The Mummy might occasionally jump and slam the ground, causing a small shockwave. Jump to avoid the shockwave.
- Slow Advance: It will continue to slowly walk towards you, trying to make contact.
- Continue Attacking the Head: Even when reassembled, the head remains the primary weak point. Continue to use your Axe sub-weapon and jump attacks.
- Duo Attack Timing: Save your Duo Attack for when the Mummy is stationary or when you can guarantee multiple hits.
- Prioritize Survival: If your HP is low, switch to Charlotte and cast Heal. Don't be afraid to use a Potion if necessary.
- Exploit Openings: After the Mummy performs an attack, there's usually a brief window where it's vulnerable. Capitalize on these moments.
Post-Battle Reward
Upon defeating the Mummy, you'll receive the Mummy Bandage item. This is a key item that allows you to access new areas in the castle by wrapping around certain objects. You will also gain a significant amount of experience points and gold.
