Boss: Old Axe Armor
The Old Axe Armor is an early-game boss found in the City of Haze. While not overly complex, it can pose a challenge if you're unprepared. This guide will help you cleave through its defenses.
Preparation
Before entering the boss chamber, ensure you have the following:
- Healing Items: Stock up on at least 3-5
Potions orHigh Potions . You can purchase these from Vincent in the castle shop. - Sub-Weapons: The
Axe sub-weapon is highly effective against the Old Axe Armor due to its arc, allowing you to hit its head. If you haven't found it yet, explore the early areas of the City of Haze or the Castle Entrance. - Equipment: Equip your best available weapons and armor. For Jonathan, consider a fast-hitting weapon like the
Short Sword orWhip . For Charlotte, ensure she has a decent offensive spell equipped, such asFireball orIce Needle . - Levels: Aim for both Jonathan and Charlotte to be around Level 5-7 for a comfortable fight.
Battle Strategy
The Old Axe Armor has a few predictable attack patterns. The key to victory is understanding these and reacting accordingly.
Phase 1: Ground Attacks
The boss will primarily stay on the ground, lumbering towards you and performing two main attacks:
- Axe Swing: The Old Axe Armor will wind up and swing its large axe horizontally. This attack has a decent reach.
- Axe Throw: It will occasionally throw its axe in a high arc. This axe will then return to its hand after a short delay.
Strategy for Phase 1:
- Maintain Distance: Keep a medium distance from the boss. This allows you to react to its axe swings without being immediately hit.
- Jump Over Swings: When the Old Axe Armor prepares its horizontal axe swing, jump over it. You can often get a few hits in on its head as you descend.
- Dodge Throws: The thrown axe can be tricky. Either duck under its arc if you're close enough, or move away from its trajectory. Be mindful of its return path.
- Utilize Sub-Weapons: Jonathan's
Axe sub-weapon is excellent here. Throw it when the boss is advancing or preparing an attack, as its arc can consistently hit the Old Axe Armor's head, which is its weak point. - Charlotte's Role: Have Charlotte cast offensive spells like
Fireball from a safe distance. Her spells are effective for consistent damage. Remember to switch to her briefly to cast, then switch back to Jonathan for mobility and primary attacks.
Phase 2: Jumping Attacks
Once the Old Axe Armor takes a significant amount of damage, it will start to incorporate jumping attacks into its repertoire. It will jump high into the air and attempt to land on you.
Strategy for Phase 2:
- Anticipate Jumps: The boss's jump is telegraphed by a slight crouch. As soon as you see this, prepare to move.
- Slide Under: The most effective way to avoid the jumping attack is to slide under the Old Axe Armor as it descends. This also positions you perfectly to get a few hits in as it lands.
- Continue Sub-Weapon Use: The
Axe sub-weapon remains valuable during this phase, especially if you can time it to hit the boss as it's landing or preparing to jump. - Team Attack: If you have enough MP, consider using a
Team Attack when the boss is vulnerable, such as after it lands from a jump.
General Tips
- Target the Head: The Old Axe Armor's head is its weak point. Prioritize hitting it whenever possible for increased damage.
- Don't Get Cornered: The boss is slow but powerful. Avoid getting trapped in a corner of the arena, as this will limit your dodging options.
- Heal Proactively: Don't wait until your HP is critically low. Use a
Potion orHigh Potion when you've taken a few hits to stay in control of the fight. - Familiarize with Controls: Ensure you're comfortable switching between Jonathan and Charlotte, and using sub-weapons and spells efficiently.
Upon defeating the Old Axe Armor, you will gain access to the next area of the City of Haze and progress further into Dracula's Castle. You will also receive a significant amount of experience and gold.
