Boss: White Dragon

The White Dragon is a formidable foe found in the Dark Academy portrait. This boss requires careful movement and precise timing to overcome. Make sure you are adequately prepared before entering its lair. While not the most complex boss, its sheer size and the environmental hazards it creates can quickly overwhelm an unprepared adventurer.

Location and Access

The White Dragon resides in the deepest reaches of the Dark Academy portrait. To reach it, you must first navigate through the academy's treacherous halls, battling various magical creatures and solving minor environmental puzzles. The boss chamber is typically located towards the end of the portrait, accessible after defeating the Lesser Demon mini-boss and activating the warp point nearby. This warp point is crucial for quick retries if the battle doesn't go as planned.

Recommended Setup

Character & Level

  • Level: Aim for at least Level 25-30. While skilled players might manage at a lower level, this range provides a good balance of HP, MP, and attack power to comfortably handle the fight.
  • Playable Character: Both Jonathan and Charlotte are viable. Jonathan excels with raw damage output, while Charlotte offers superior magical utility and healing. A balanced approach, utilizing both characters' strengths, is often the most effective.

Weapons & Sub-Weapons (Jonathan)

  • Primary Weapon:
    • Whips: The Vampire Killer (if you've unlocked it) or the Combat Whip are excellent choices. Whips offer good reach and consistent damage.
    • Swords: The Broadsword or Cutlass provide decent damage, but require closer proximity.
    • Spears: The Lance or Partisan offer good range and piercing damage, useful for hitting the dragon's head.
  • Sub-Weapons:
    • Axe: Highly recommended. The Axe's arc allows it to hit the White Dragon's head even when it's slightly elevated, and it deals significant damage.
    • Cross: Good for consistent damage if you can land multiple hits, but less effective than the Axe for burst damage.
    • Bible: Can provide some passive damage, but generally less impactful than direct attack sub-weapons.

Spells & Equipment (Charlotte)

  • Offensive Spells:
    • Thunderbolt: Deals excellent damage and can hit multiple segments of the dragon.
    • Ice Needle: A quick, single-target spell that can be spammed.
    • Flame Shot: Decent damage, but its trajectory can be tricky to land consistently on the dragon's head.
  • Support Spells:
    • Heal: Absolutely essential. Assign it to a quick-access button.
    • Explosion: While powerful, its MP cost might be too high for sustained use unless you have significant MP regeneration.
  • Equipment:
    • Head: Anything that boosts INT or DEF, such as the Wizard Hat or Circlet.
    • Body: Armor that provides high DEF, like the Plate Mail or Chain Mail.
    • Accessories:
      • Mana Prism: For MP regeneration, allowing more frequent spell casting.
      • Talisman: Increases luck, potentially yielding better item drops (though less critical for a boss fight).
      • Defense Ring/Strength Ring: Boosts relevant stats.

Relics & Items

  • Relics:
    • HP Max Up / MP Max Up: Collect as many as possible before the fight.
    • Potion / High Potion: Stock up on these. Assign them to a quick-access button for emergencies.
    • Antidote: While the White Dragon doesn't inflict poison, it's good practice to carry some.
  • Food: Any food that provides stat boosts or HP recovery can be helpful.

Boss Strategy: White Dragon

The White Dragon is a massive, multi-segmented creature that occupies a large portion of the screen. Its primary weakness is its head, which takes significantly more damage than its body segments. The arena is a relatively flat, open space, but the dragon's movements can make it feel cramped.

Attack Patterns & Evasion

  1. Body Slam/Charge: The dragon will often coil and then lunge across the screen, attempting to hit you with its body.
    • Evasion: This is its most common attack. Double-jump over its body as it charges. Be mindful of its head, which can also deal damage. Sometimes, it will perform a shorter, more vertical slam; simply move away from its impact zone.
  2. Ice Breath: The White Dragon will rear its head back and unleash a stream of ice breath across the ground. This attack can freeze you, leaving you vulnerable.
    • Evasion: When you see it rear its head, quickly double-jump onto one of the small platforms on either side of the arena, or simply double-jump over the breath if you are far enough away.
  3. Ice Shards: The dragon will sometimes spit out several large ice shards that fly in an arc.
    • Evasion: These are relatively slow-moving. Dash or duck under them, or use a well-timed jump.
  4. Tail Swipe: Less common, but if you get too close to its tail, it might perform a quick swipe.
    • Evasion: Maintain a safe distance from its tail.

Combat Tactics

  • Target the Head: This is paramount. All your efforts should be focused on hitting the White Dragon's head. It takes significantly more damage and is the key to a quick victory.
  • Jonathan's Approach:
    • Utilize the Axe sub-weapon whenever the dragon's head is within range. Its arc makes it ideal for hitting the head even when it's slightly above you.
    • When the dragon charges, double-jump over it and try to land a whip strike or two on its head as it passes.
    • If you have the Vampire Killer, its long reach is excellent for hitting the head from a safer distance.
  • Charlotte's Approach:
    • Spam Thunderbolt or Ice Needle. Thunderbolt can hit multiple segments, but aim for the head.
    • Keep Heal ready. Switch to Charlotte to cast Heal if either character's HP drops significantly.
    • If you have the Explosion spell, use it when the dragon's head is stationary and vulnerable for massive damage, but be mindful of your MP.
  • Dual Crush: If you have a Dual Crush available, save it for when the dragon's head is stationary and you can guarantee maximum hits. The Thunderbolt Dual Crush is particularly effective.
  • Platform Utilization: The small platforms on either side of the arena are not just for evading Ice Breath. You can use them to gain height for better attacks on the dragon's head, especially for Jonathan's whip or Charlotte's spells.
  • Patience and Timing: Don't rush. Wait for openings when the head is low and vulnerable. Prioritize evasion over aggressive attacks if your HP is low.

Common Pitfalls & Tips

  • Getting Frozen: Being frozen by the Ice Breath is a death sentence if the dragon follows up with a body slam. Always prioritize evading the breath.
  • Ignoring Healing: This is a battle of attrition. Don't be afraid to switch to Charlotte and cast Heal, or use a Potion.
  • Hitting the Body: While the body can be hit, it deals minimal damage. Focus exclusively on the head to conserve MP and sub-weapon hearts.
  • Underleveled: Trying to fight the White Dragon significantly under Level 25 can make the fight unnecessarily difficult due to low damage output and HP.

Rewards

Upon defeating the White Dragon, you will receive experience points and a valuable item. The specific item drop can vary, but it's often a rare piece of equipment or a powerful spell.

  • Experience Points: A significant amount, helping you level up further.
  • Item Drop (Common): HP Max Up or MP Max Up.
  • Item Drop (Rare): Potentially the Dragon Scale (a crafting material) or a powerful weapon/armor piece.

The defeat of the White Dragon also clears the Dark Academy portrait, allowing you to progress further into the game's narrative and unlock new areas.
