Enemies & Bestiary

Welcome to the comprehensive enemies and bestiary guide for Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin! This section details every foe you'll encounter, from the lowliest Zombie to the most formidable boss. Understanding their attack patterns, weaknesses, and item drops is crucial for survival and 100% completion.

Understanding the Bestiary

The in-game Bestiary, accessible from the main menu, records every monster you defeat. Each entry provides:

  • HP: The enemy's health points.
  • EXP: Experience gained upon defeat.
  • Attack: Their physical attack power.
  • Defense: Their physical defense.
  • Weaknesses: Elemental or weapon types they are vulnerable to.
  • Resistances: Elemental or weapon types they are strong against.
  • Item Drops: Common and rare items they may drop.

To fully complete the Bestiary, you must defeat each enemy at least once. For item drops, you'll often need to farm specific enemies, sometimes requiring the use of luck-enhancing gear.

Farming for Items and Experience

Many enemies drop valuable items, including equipment, consumables, and even rare souls or spells. Here's how to maximize your farming efficiency:

  • Increase Luck: Equip items that boost your LCK stat. Key items include the Thief Ring (found in the City of Haze, in a hidden room above the large central area), the Gambler's Glasses (dropped by the enemy "Fleaman" in various locations, particularly plentiful in the Sandy Grave), and the Rare Ring (a rare drop from "Ghost" enemies in the Entrance).
  • Use the "Luck" Spell: Charlotte's "Luck" spell significantly increases item drop rates for a short duration. Leveling this spell up will extend its duration and effectiveness.
  • Re-enter Rooms: Enemies respawn when you exit and re-enter a room. This is your primary method for farming.
  • Target Specific Enemies: Consult the Bestiary for desired item drops and their corresponding enemies.

Common Enemy Types & Strategies

Zombies & Skeletons

These are your most basic foes, found predominantly in the Entrance and Castle's Main Hall. They are slow and predictable.

  • Strategy: Any attack will suffice. Whip attacks are effective for clearing groups.
  • Notable Drops:
    • Zombie: Meat (common), Cotton Hat (rare).
    • Skeleton: Bone (common), Short Sword (rare).

Fleamen

Small, agile creatures that jump around erratically. They are annoying but have low HP.

  • Location: Found in the Sandy Grave, City of Haze, and other early-to-mid game areas.
  • Strategy: Use wide-arc attacks like Jonathan's whip or Charlotte's offensive spells (e.g., Fireball) to hit them mid-jump.
  • Notable Drops:
    • Fleaman: Potion (common), Gambler's Glasses (rare - highly recommended for farming!).

Mermen

Aquatic enemies that spit water projectiles. They often appear in water-filled sections.

  • Location: Primarily in the Forgotten City and watery sections of the Forest of Doom.
  • Strategy: Approach carefully and attack between their water shots. Jonathan's whip has good reach.
  • Notable Drops:
    • Merman: Merman Scale (common), Aquamarine (rare).

Ghouls & Werewolves

Stronger, more aggressive melee enemies. Ghouls often crawl, while Werewolves are fast and powerful.

  • Location: Ghouls appear in the Dark Academy and Master's Keep. Werewolves are found in the Forest of Doom and Burnt Paradise.
  • Strategy:
    • Ghouls: Keep your distance and use ranged attacks or jump over them for a back attack.
    • Werewolves: They charge quickly. Dodge their initial attack and counter. Sub-weapons like the Axe or Cross are effective.
  • Notable Drops:
    • Ghoul: Rotten Meat (common), Ghoul Blood (rare - ingredient for potions).
    • Werewolf: Werewolf Bone (common), Battle Axe (rare).

Boss Strategies

Bosses are unique encounters that often require specific tactics. Always save before a boss fight!

Dullahan

The headless knight, found in the City of Haze.

  • Weakness: Strike, Fire
  • Strategy: Dullahan has two primary attacks: a slow, sweeping sword attack and a head throw.
    1. When he sweeps his sword, jump over it or duck under it if you're close.
    2. When he throws his head, it will bounce across the floor. Jump over it.
    3. His weak point is his neck. Use Jonathan's whip to hit his neck after he attacks.
    4. Charlotte's Fireball spell is very effective due to his Fire weakness. Combine with Jonathan's attacks for a quick defeat.
  • Reward: HP Max Up, Dullahan's Mail (rare drop).

Legion

A grotesque sphere of bodies, located in the Dark Academy.

  • Weakness: Strike, Holy
  • Strategy: Legion is initially invulnerable. You must destroy the outer layer of bodies to expose its core.
    1. Focus on one section of the outer layer. Jonathan's whip or Charlotte's Holy spells (e.g., Heal, if you have it) are good.
    2. Avoid the bodies that fall off; they will try to grab you.
    3. Once the core is exposed, it will fire lasers. Dodge these by moving to the opposite side of the screen.
    4. Unleash your strongest attacks on the core. The Cross sub-weapon is excellent here.
  • Reward: HP Max Up, Legion's Corpse (rare drop).

Astarte

The seductive succubus, found in the 13th Street painting.

  • Weakness: Strike, Holy
  • Strategy: Astarte has several magical attacks and a charm ability.
    1. She will summon a large, slow-moving energy orb. Destroy it quickly with any attack.
    2. She can teleport and summon bats. Use wide-area attacks or sub-weapons to clear the bats.
    3. Her most dangerous attack is her charm. If you are charmed, your controls will be reversed. To avoid this, switch to your partner (Charlotte or Jonathan) just before the charm takes effect, or quickly move away.
    4. Her physical attacks are weak, but her magic is potent. Use Holy-elemental attacks from Charlotte (e.g., Heal, if available) or Jonathan's Holy sub-weapons (Cross, Bible).
  • Reward: HP Max Up, Astarte's Brooch (rare drop).
