Legion, a grotesque and formidable entity, serves as the guardian of the Forest of Doom painting. This boss is a massive, spherical amalgamation of countless decaying bodies, constantly shifting and reforming. Defeating Legion is crucial for progressing through the game and unlocking further areas.
Location and Preparation
Legion is encountered in a large, open chamber at the end of the Forest of Doom painting. Before entering the boss arena, ensure you are adequately prepared. A recommended character level for this encounter is around Level 18-22. While not strictly necessary, being within this range will make the fight significantly more manageable.
Recommended Equipment and Spells:
- Jonathan:
- Weapon: The Vampire Killer whip is always a solid choice due to its reach and power. If you've acquired the Combat Knife or Broadsword and have leveled up their weapon skills, they can also be effective for quick damage on the core.
- Sub-Weapon: The Cross is excellent for clearing the outer shell of bodies due to its wide area of effect. The Axe can also be useful for single-target damage on the core.
- Armor/Accessories: Equip the best defensive gear you have available. Items that boost STR or CON are beneficial. The Cape or Traveler's Hat can provide useful defensive bonuses.
- Charlotte:
- Spell: Acidic Bubbles (if acquired and leveled) is highly effective for clearing the outer bodies due to its multi-hit nature and decent range. Flame Shot or Ice Needle can provide consistent damage to the core. Consider equipping Heal or Cure Poison as a backup.
- Armor/Accessories: Focus on INT-boosting gear to maximize spell damage. The Wizard's Hat or Mystic Robe are good choices.
- Dual Crush: The Grand Cross Dual Crush is incredibly powerful for clearing the outer shell and dealing significant damage to the exposed core. Ensure your MP is full before initiating the fight.
Legion's Attack Patterns and Strategy
Legion has two distinct phases: the shelled phase and the core phase. The primary objective is to destroy the outer shell of bodies to expose the vulnerable core, then focus all attacks on the core.
Phase 1: Shelled Form
In this phase, Legion is protected by a thick layer of decaying bodies. Your goal is to destroy these bodies to reveal the core.
- Body Detachment: Legion will periodically detach segments of its body, which then fall towards your position. These bodies can deal moderate damage upon impact. They are relatively slow, so watch their shadows to predict their landing spots and move out of the way.
- Laser Beams: Once a significant portion of the outer shell is destroyed, Legion will begin to fire thin, red laser beams from its partially exposed core. These lasers track your movement for a brief moment before firing. They are fast but predictable. Dodge by moving quickly or using a backdash.
- Strategy:
- Jonathan: Use the Vampire Killer whip's wide arc to hit multiple bodies at once. The Cross sub-weapon is exceptionally effective here, as its projectile can hit numerous bodies as it travels across the screen.
- Charlotte: Spam area-of-effect spells like Acidic Bubbles or Flame Shot to clear large groups of bodies quickly. Her magic is crucial for efficient body removal.
- Dual Crush: If you have enough MP, unleash Grand Cross early in this phase. It will decimate a large portion of the outer shell, significantly speeding up the process.
- Movement: Stay mobile. Jump and whip/cast spells, then move to avoid falling bodies and laser fire. The arena is large enough to maneuver effectively.
Phase 2: Exposed Core
Once enough bodies are destroyed, Legion's central core will be fully exposed. This is your window to deal massive damage.
- Core Vulnerability: The core is Legion's only weak point. All your attacks should be directed here.
- Increased Laser Frequency: With the core exposed, Legion will fire laser beams more frequently and sometimes in rapid succession. Be prepared to dodge constantly.
- Body Regeneration: If you take too long to destroy the core, Legion will begin to regenerate its outer shell, forcing you back into Phase 1. This is why sustained damage on the core is vital.
- Strategy:
- Jonathan: Switch to your highest single-target damage weapon if you have one (e.g., Combat Knife or Broadsword if leveled, otherwise continue with Vampire Killer). Use the Axe sub-weapon for consistent damage.
- Charlotte: Focus on powerful, single-target spells like Ice Needle or continued Flame Shot. If you have enough MP, another Grand Cross can deal immense damage to the core.
- Co-op Attack: Utilize the Co-op Attack (press Y) when the core is exposed for a burst of combined damage.
- Aggression: This is a damage race. Be aggressive, but don't get reckless. Prioritize dodging lasers while continuously attacking the core. If you see bodies starting to reform, redouble your efforts.
Common Pitfalls and Tips
- Don't get cornered: Always maintain space to move and dodge. The falling bodies can quickly overwhelm you if you're stuck.
- Manage MP: Charlotte's spells are crucial. Use MP restoring items if necessary, especially if you plan on using multiple Dual Crushes.
- Prioritize body removal: In Phase 1, clearing the bodies quickly is more important than trying to chip away at the core through small openings.
- Listen for sound cues: Legion often makes a distinct sound before firing lasers, giving you a split second to react.
- Don't be afraid to retreat: If your health is low, use a healing item or Charlotte's Heal spell. It's better to heal than to die and restart the fight.
