Navigating Dracula's Castle in Portrait of Ruin is crucial for uncovering all its secrets and progressing through the story. While the castle itself is a formidable labyrinth, the true challenge lies within the magical portraits scattered throughout. This section will guide you through the initial exploration of the castle, focusing on key areas, essential items, and strategies to overcome early obstacles.

Castle Entrance & Main Hall

Your journey begins in the Castle Entrance. This area serves as a tutorial and introduces you to the basic mechanics. Follow these steps:

Head right from your starting point. You'll encounter your first enemies, basic Zombies and Mermen. Practice your whip attacks and sub-weapons.
Continue right until you reach a large chamber. Here, you'll find a save point. Always save your progress when you encounter one!
Just beyond the save point, you'll enter the Main Hall. This grand area often has multiple paths. For now, focus on the lower path to the right.
You'll soon come across a room with a large, ornate portrait. This is your first portal to a different dimension. Interact with it to enter the "City of Haze."

The City of Haze (First Portrait)

The City of Haze is your first major challenge outside the castle walls. It's a sprawling urban environment filled with new enemies and valuable items.

Exploration & Item Acquisition

Upon entering, proceed right. You'll encounter Flea Men and Axe Armors. Be wary of the Axe Armors' projectile attacks.
Look for breakable walls and hidden passages. Many early secrets are found this way.
Key Item: In one of the upper-right sections of the City of Haze, accessible by jumping on platforms, you'll find the Map 1 item. This is essential for revealing the layout of the current area on your bottom screen.
Continue exploring thoroughly. You'll find various consumables like Potions and Antidotes, as well as early equipment such as the Leather Plate armor.

Boss Battle: Dullahan

At the end of the City of Haze, you'll face the boss, Dullahan. This headless knight wields a large axe and shield.

Strategy: Dullahan is slow but powerful. His main attack is a wide axe swing. He will also occasionally throw his head, which bounces around the room.
Focus on dodging his axe swings by jumping over or sliding under them.
Attack his body when his shield is down. Jonathan's whip is effective, and Charlotte's offensive spells can deal good damage.
When he throws his head, prioritize avoiding it. It can be difficult to hit him while his head is airborne.
Upon defeating Dullahan, you will receive the "Portrait of the City" ability, allowing you to freely enter and exit the City of Haze portrait from anywhere in the castle.

Return to Dracula's Castle: Unlocking New Paths

With the City of Haze cleared, new areas within Dracula's Castle become accessible.

Head back to the Main Hall. Now that you have explored the City of Haze, you can access previously blocked paths in the castle.
Look for a path leading upwards in the Main Hall. This will take you to the "Great Stairway."
Important: As you ascend the Great Stairway, you'll encounter more challenging enemies like Bone Pillars and Ghosts. Be prepared for increased difficulty.
Continue your ascent, exploring every nook and cranny. You'll find another save point and eventually reach the "Balcony" area, which often connects to other castle sections.
