Post-Game Content & Unlockables

Congratulations, vampire hunter! Defeating Dracula and Brauner is just the beginning in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. The castle still holds many secrets, and new challenges await those brave enough to delve deeper. This section details all the exciting post-game content and unlockables to extend your adventure.

New Game+ (Richter Mode & Sisters Mode)

Upon completing the game and achieving the good ending (defeating Dracula), you'll unlock the ability to start a New Game+ with two entirely new playable characters:

  • Richter Mode: Play as the legendary vampire hunter, Richter Belmont. Richter utilizes his iconic whip, the Vampire Killer, and a suite of classic sub-weapons like the Axe, Holy Water, Cross, and Dagger. He has unique movement abilities, including a slide and a backflip. Richter's playstyle is more action-oriented and reminiscent of older Castlevania titles, focusing on precise combat and platforming.
  • Sisters Mode: Control Stella and Loretta, Brauner's daughters, who have been freed from his control. This mode offers a unique dual-character gameplay experience. Stella is a melee fighter, wielding a rapier, while Loretta is a magic-user, casting various elemental spells. You can switch between them instantly, allowing for strategic combinations. Mastering their combined abilities is key to success in this mode.

To access these modes, simply select "New Game" from the title screen after clearing the game. You'll be prompted to choose between Jonathan & Charlotte, Richter, or Sisters Mode.

Boss Rush Mode

For those seeking a pure test of combat prowess, Boss Rush Mode becomes available after your initial completion of the game. This mode pits you against all the game's bosses, one after another, with limited resources. There are several tiers of Boss Rush, each with increasing difficulty and unique rewards.

  • Accessing Boss Rush: Head to the Master's Keep area of the castle. The entrance to Boss Rush is located in the room just before the final boss chamber where you fought Dracula. Look for a large, ornate door that was previously inaccessible.
  • Rewards: Successfully completing Boss Rush modes can yield powerful equipment and rare items. For instance, completing the first Boss Rush often grants you the Artemis Bow, a formidable ranged weapon. Subsequent completions and higher difficulties can unlock items like the Death Scythe, Retro Armor, and other valuable gear. Experiment with different character combinations (Jonathan & Charlotte, Richter, or Sisters) as some rewards might be tied to specific characters or completion times.

Sound Mode

Relive the epic soundtrack of Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin with Sound Mode. This feature allows you to listen to all the in-game music and sound effects at your leisure.

  • Unlocking Sound Mode: Sound Mode is automatically unlocked once you complete the game for the first time.
  • Accessing Sound Mode: From the title screen, navigate to the "Options" menu. You will find "Sound Mode" listed there.

Hard Mode

If the standard difficulty wasn't enough of a challenge, Hard Mode provides a significantly tougher experience. Enemies have increased health, deal more damage, and some boss patterns might be slightly altered or more aggressive.

  • Unlocking Hard Mode: Hard Mode is unlocked after completing the game on Normal difficulty.
  • Starting Hard Mode: When beginning a "New Game," you'll have the option to select "Hard" difficulty. This can be combined with Richter Mode or Sisters Mode for an even greater challenge.

Collecting All Items & Map Completion

Even after defeating the final boss, there's always more to explore. Striving for 100% map completion and collecting every item is a common post-game goal for completionists.

  • Map Completion: Revisit every corner of Dracula's Castle and its various portraits. Look for hidden rooms, breakable walls, and secret passages that you might have missed during your initial playthrough. The in-game map will show you your progress.
  • Item Collection:
    • Rare Drops: Many enemies have rare item drops. Consider farming specific enemies in areas like the Dark Academy or the Forest of Doom for their unique gear. The Lucky Charm accessory can increase your chances of rare drops.
    • Shop Inventory: The shop's inventory expands as you progress and complete certain tasks. Check back regularly for new weapons, armor, and accessories.
    • Hidden Chests: Some chests are cleverly hidden or require specific abilities to reach. Use your map to identify unexplored areas.
    • Quest Rewards: complete all of Wind's quests. Many of these offer valuable items, including powerful weapons, accessories, and even new spells. Some quests are only available after certain story progression points or after completing previous quests.

Leveling Up & Maxing Stats

For those who want to truly dominate, reaching the maximum level (Level 99) and optimizing your characters' stats is a rewarding endeavor. The best areas for grinding experience points (EXP) include:

  • Dark Academy: The enemies here, particularly the large armored knights and spellcasters, offer good EXP.
  • Master's Keep: The later sections of the castle, especially the rooms leading to Dracula, contain high-level enemies that yield substantial EXP.
  • Forest of Doom (Post-Game): Some of the tougher creatures in the Forest of Doom can also provide excellent EXP.

Focus on equipping EXP-boosting gear like the Three 7s accessory if you have it, and consider using the Tome of EXP spell (if playing as Charlotte) to further accelerate your leveling.
