Boss: Dullahan
Dullahan, the headless knight, serves as the formidable guardian of the City of Haze. This challenging encounter takes place in a grand, expansive chamber situated at the far eastern end of the painting, accessible after navigating through the treacherous corridors and defeating the various undead inhabitants of the City of Haze. Prepare for a multi-stage battle that demands precise movement, strategic attack timing, and effective use of both Jonathan's and Charlotte's abilities.
Recommended Preparation
Before confronting Dullahan, ensure your duo is adequately prepared. This boss can be a significant roadblock if approached under-leveled or with suboptimal gear.
- Recommended Level: Aim for Jonathan and Charlotte to be at least Level 28-32. This ensures sufficient HP, MP, and attack power to withstand Dullahan's onslaught and deal meaningful damage.
- Jonathan's Equipment:
- Weapon: The Vampire Killer whip is highly effective due to its range and consistent damage. If you have acquired the Flame Whip or Ice Whip from sub-quests or drops, these can also be excellent choices, though Dullahan has no specific elemental weakness.
- Sub-Weapon: The Axe or Cross are excellent choices for dealing burst damage to Dullahan's head when it detaches, or for clearing spectral swords. The Bible can also provide a defensive barrier.
- Armor: Prioritize armor that offers high DEF. The Cuirass or Plate Mail are good options.
- Accessory: The Medal (for increased ATK) or Talisman (for increased DEF/LCK) are generally useful. The Miser Ring can be helpful for farming gold if you need to purchase healing items.
- Charlotte's Equipment:
- Weapon: While Charlotte's physical attacks are secondary, ensure she has a decent book equipped for any emergency melee.
- Armor: Equip the best available defensive armor, similar to Jonathan.
- Accessory: The Mana Prism or Sorceress's Crest are invaluable for MP regeneration and spell power.
- Spells (Charlotte):
- Offensive: Fireball (for consistent damage), Ice Needle (can hit multiple times), or Thunderbolt (powerful but slower cast). The Acidic Bubbles spell can also be surprisingly effective due to its lingering damage.
- Support: Heal is absolutely critical. Assign it to a quick-access button. Defensive Barrier (from the Skeleton Ape) can provide a temporary shield.
- Items: Stock up on Potions, High Potions, and Mana Prisms. Having 5-7 of each is a good baseline.
Dullahan's Attack Patterns & Strategy
Dullahan's battle unfolds in two distinct phases, primarily defined by the presence or absence of his head. Understanding these phases and his specific attacks is key to victory.
Phase 1: Armored Body & Attached Head
In this initial phase, Dullahan is a towering, armored knight with his head firmly attached to his shoulders. He moves deliberately but his attacks pack a punch.
- Axe Slash: Dullahan will perform wide, sweeping slashes with his massive axe. These attacks have a deceptively long reach.
- Counter: These are usually telegraphed. Double-jump over the horizontal swings or backdash quickly to avoid. If he raises the axe high, prepare to duck under it or move behind him.
- Axe Slam: He may raise his axe high above his head and bring it down with considerable force, creating a shockwave upon impact.
- Counter: The shockwave travels along the ground. Jump over it. The slam itself can be avoided by moving away from the impact zone.
- Spectral Sword Summon: Dullahan will occasionally summon 3-5 spectral swords that float around him before darting towards your characters.
- Counter: These swords can be destroyed with a single hit from Jonathan's whip or Charlotte's spells. Prioritize destroying them to avoid taking unnecessary damage.
- Charge Attack: Dullahan will sometimes lower his head and charge across the screen. This attack is fast and deals heavy damage.
- Counter: This is one of his most dangerous attacks. As soon as you see him lower his head, immediately double-jump over him or use a well-timed backdash to get behind him.
Strategy for Phase 1: Focus your attacks primarily on Dullahan's body. Jonathan's whip is excellent for consistent damage from a safe distance. Charlotte should be casting offensive spells like Fireball or Ice Needle whenever possible, while keeping an eye on HP for timely Heal spells. Stay mobile, avoiding his axe swings and jumping over shockwaves. Destroy spectral swords as soon as they appear.
Phase 2: Detached Head & Vulnerability
After taking a certain amount of damage, Dullahan's head will detach from his body and float independently. This is your primary damage window.
- Head Projectiles: The detached head will float around the arena, occasionally spitting out small, fast-moving projectiles.
- Counter: These projectiles are relatively small but quick. Keep moving and jump/duck to avoid them.
- Body Attacks (Continued): Even without its head, Dullahan's body remains active, continuing to perform axe slashes and charges. It moves more erratically and can be harder to predict.
- Counter: Treat the body as a secondary threat. Continue to avoid its attacks while focusing on the head.
Strategy for Phase 2: This is where you unleash your most powerful attacks. The detached head is Dullahan's true weakness. Both Jonathan and Charlotte should prioritize attacking the head. Jonathan can use his whip, but sub-weapons like the Axe or Cross can deal significant burst damage if aimed correctly. Charlotte should continuously cast her strongest offensive spells. The head is often easier to hit with spells due to its erratic movement. Maintain awareness of the body's movements to avoid its lingering attacks. If the head reattaches, revert to Phase 1 strategy until it detaches again.
General Combat Tips
- Partner System: Utilize the partner system effectively. You can command your partner to attack specific targets (e.g., the head) or to stay close for healing. The "Attack" command (Up + Y) is useful for focusing damage.
- Dual Crush: If your Dual Crush gauge is full, consider using it when Dullahan's head is detached for maximum impact. The Greatest Five (Jonathan) or Divine Judgment (Charlotte) can deal massive damage.
- Healing: Don't be afraid to use healing items or Charlotte's Heal spell. It's better to use a potion than to die and restart the fight.
- Movement: Constant movement is crucial. Dullahan's attacks are powerful, so avoiding them is paramount. Master your double-jump and backdash.
- Familiarity: If you're struggling, take some time to observe Dullahan's patterns without focusing on attacking. Learning his tells will significantly improve your chances.
Post-Battle Rewards
Upon defeating Dullahan, you will receive a substantial amount of experience points, propelling your characters forward in their progression. More importantly, you will acquire a new ability that is essential for continuing your journey through Castlevania. This ability allows you to break certain barriers or access previously unreachable areas, paving the way to the next painting and further challenges within the castle.
