Boss: Astarte

Astarte, the seductive succubus, serves as the formidable boss of The Sandy Grave, the desert-themed painting accessed from the City of Haze. You'll encounter her in a grand, ornate chamber located at the far right of the painting's map. Defeating her is crucial, as it grants you access to the next major area, the Forest of Doom.

Recommended Preparation

Before challenging Astarte, ensure your characters are adequately prepared. A recommended level range of 28-32 for both Jonathan and Charlotte will make the fight manageable. Grinding a few levels in The Sandy Grave or even the City of Haze beforehand can significantly ease the difficulty.

Recommended Equipment & Spells:
  • Jonathan:
    • Weapon: The Vampire Killer (if you've unlocked it) is always a strong choice. Otherwise, a high-damage whip like the Combat Whip or Flame Whip is effective.
    • Sub-Weapons: The Cross or Axe are excellent for consistent damage. The Holy Water can also be useful for area denial if she summons bats.
    • Armor: Equip the best defensive gear you have, prioritizing defense and perhaps some resistance to dark or curse if available. The Mystic Robe or Death's Robe (if you've found it) are good options.
    • Accessories: The Talisman or Medal can provide a slight edge.
  • Charlotte:
    • Offensive Spells: Thunderbolt, Ice Needle, or Fireball are all strong choices. Focus on spells with quick casting times and good damage output. Energy Flow can also be effective for sustained damage.
    • Support Spells: Sanctuary is absolutely essential for this fight. Make sure it's assigned to a quick-access button.
    • Armor: Similar to Jonathan, prioritize defense. The Mystic Robe or Death's Robe are good.
    • Accessories: The Magical Ticket or Sorceress's Tiara can boost her magic attack.

Astarte's Attack Patterns & Strategy

Astarte primarily relies on a mix of magical projectiles, summoned creatures, and her signature charm ability. Understanding her tells and how to counter each attack is key to victory.

Phase 1: Initial Assault

Astarte begins the fight by hovering in the center of the arena. She has a few distinct attacks:

  • Bat Swarm: Astarte will occasionally summon a flock of bats that fly across the screen in a wave formation. These are easily dispatched with a single whip swing from Jonathan or a low-cost spell from Charlotte. Don't let them overwhelm you; clear them quickly.
  • Dark Orb Projectiles: She will fire several slow-moving dark orbs in various patterns. These can be jumped over or ducked under. Keep moving and watch their trajectory.
  • Dark Pillar: Astarte may summon a pillar of dark energy from the ground directly beneath one of your characters. This has a slight wind-up animation, giving you a moment to move out of the way.

Strategy: During this phase, focus on aggressive, sustained damage. Position Jonathan close for whip attacks while Charlotte casts her most powerful offensive spells. Keep both characters together to maximize damage and quickly react to her attacks.

Phase 2: The Charm Offensive

Astarte's most dangerous ability is her Charm spell. She will float to the center of the screen, glow, and then unleash a wave of pink hearts that spread across the arena. If either Jonathan or Charlotte is hit by these hearts, they will become charmed.

  • Charm Effect: A charmed character will become uncontrollable and walk towards Astarte, often taking damage from her other attacks. They will also be unable to attack or use items.
  • Countering Charm: This is where Sanctuary becomes vital. The moment one character is charmed, immediately switch to the uncharmed character. Select Sanctuary from Charlotte's spell list (or a quick-access button) and cast it on the charmed character. The Sanctuary spell creates a healing aura that instantly breaks the charm effect.

Strategy: Always be prepared for the Charm spell. As soon as you see the pink hearts, try to dodge them. If a character is charmed, prioritize breaking the effect with Sanctuary. Do NOT try to attack Astarte while one character is charmed, as you'll likely take unnecessary damage. Once the charm is broken, resume your offensive.

Phase 3: Desperation Attacks

As Astarte's health dwindles, she may become more aggressive and use her attacks more frequently. She might also combine her projectile attacks with bat summons. The core strategy remains the same: dodge, attack, and be ready to break charm.

General Tips for Success:

  • Dual Crush: utilize your Dual Crush attacks! The Thunderbolt or Grand Cross Dual Crushes can deal massive damage and provide valuable invincibility frames. Save them for when Astarte is vulnerable or when you need to burst her down.
  • Movement is Key: Astarte's attacks are telegraphed, but they require constant movement to avoid. Don't stand still for too long.
  • Prioritize Charm: Seriously, breaking the charm is your number one priority. A charmed character is a liability.
  • Healing: Keep an eye on both characters' HP. Use Potions or Charlotte's Heal spell as needed.
  • Familiarize Yourself: If you're struggling, don't be afraid to take a few attempts just to learn her attack patterns without focusing on damage.

Rewards for Victory:

Upon defeating Astarte, she will drop the following:

  • HP MAX UP: A permanent increase to your maximum HP.
  • MP MAX UP: A permanent increase to your maximum MP.
  • Astarte's Charm (Rare Drop): An accessory that increases your luck and provides some resistance to charm. This is a rare drop, so you might need to farm her if you want it.

Defeating Astarte also unlocks the next painting, the Forest of Doom, allowing you to progress further into Castlevania.
