Boss: L. Vampire
The L. Vampire, a formidable early-game boss, can be a real wall for new players. Don't be intimidated by his speed and aggressive attacks; with the right strategy and item preparation, Richter can send him back to the shadows. This fight takes place in a relatively small, enclosed arena, so spatial awareness is key.
Recommended Sub-Weapons & Items
- Axe: Highly recommended. The Axe's arc allows you to hit the L. Vampire even when he's jumping or slightly above you, and its damage output is excellent.
- Holy Water: A decent alternative if you're comfortable with its short-range area denial. It can stun the L. Vampire briefly and deal continuous damage.
- Cross: Less effective here due to the L. Vampire's erratic movements, but can be used for a quick burst of damage if you catch him.
- Roast Chicken: If you're struggling with health, try to find one before the fight. There's often one hidden in a breakable wall or candle in the stage leading up to the boss.
- Heart Restore: Always useful to keep your sub-weapon supply topped up.
Phase 1: Ground Assault
The L. Vampire begins by primarily staying on the ground, dashing towards Richter and attempting to slash with his claws. He's quite fast, so anticipating his movements is crucial.
- Maintain Distance: Try to keep a moderate distance. Too close, and you'll get hit; too far, and he'll close the gap quickly.
- Whip & Retreat: Your primary attack should be a well-timed whip. Hit him once or twice, then immediately backdash or jump away to avoid his counter-attack.
- Sub-Weapon Usage:
- If using the Axe, throw it when he's charging or about to jump. The arc will often catch him.
- If using Holy Water, toss it directly in front of you as he approaches. He'll often run into it, taking damage and being momentarily stunned.
- Watch for the Dash: His most common attack is a quick dash followed by a claw swipe. Jump over him or backdash to avoid this. If you jump over, you can often get a free whip hit on his back as you land.
Phase 2: Aerial Maneuvers & Fireballs
After taking a certain amount of damage, the L. Vampire will start incorporating more aerial attacks and will occasionally throw fireballs. This is where the fight gets more challenging.
- Fireball Dodge: He'll jump into the air and launch one or two fireballs in an arc. These are relatively slow and easy to dodge by simply moving under them or jumping over them. This is a good opportunity to use your sub-weapon.
- Jump Attack: He'll also perform a high jump, attempting to land on Richter. Move out of the way and try to get a whip hit in as he descends or lands.
- Sub-Weapon Focus: This phase is where your sub-weapon truly shines.
- The Axe is incredibly effective here, as its upward trajectory can hit him mid-jump or as he's launching fireballs.
- If you have the Holy Water, throwing it where he's about to land can deal significant damage.
- Aggressive Whipping: When he's on the ground between jumps and fireballs, be aggressive with your whip, but always be ready to dodge. Don't get greedy; one or two hits then reposition.
General Tips
- Don't Panic: The L. Vampire is fast, but his patterns are predictable. Stay calm and focus on dodging.
- Heart Management: Keep an eye on your heart count. If you're running low on sub-weapon ammo, prioritize whipping and dodging.
- Item Crash (if available): If you have enough hearts and are in a pinch, an Item Crash with the Axe or Holy Water can deal massive damage and potentially end the fight quickly. However, it consumes a large number of hearts, so use it wisely.
- Practice Makes Perfect: If you're struggling, don't be afraid to restart the stage and practice the fight. Learning his tells and attack timings is key to victory.
Defeating the L. Vampire will open the path forward, and you'll be one step closer to rescuing your beloved Annette!
