Game Story/Lore
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood plunges players into a classic tale of good versus evil, set in the year 1792. The legendary vampire hunter Richter Belmont, a direct descendant of Simon Belmont, finds himself thrust into a new battle against the resurrected Count Dracula.
The Abduction and Dracula's Return
The game's narrative begins with the peaceful village of Aljiba being attacked by dark forces. Dracula, resurrected once again by the dark priest Shaft, seeks to plunge the world into eternal night. As a cruel act of defiance and to lure Richter into his trap, Dracula's minions abduct several innocent women from the village. Among them are Richter's beloved Annette, her younger sister Maria Renard, and two other villagers, Tera and Iris.
Richter, driven by love and duty, sets out immediately for Dracula's newly manifested castle to rescue the captives and once again defeat the Lord of Darkness. His quest takes him through treacherous lands and into the heart of Castlevania, where he will face hordes of monsters and powerful bosses.
Richter's Path and Maria's Intervention
As Richter progresses, he will encounter Maria Renard, a young girl with an unusual affinity for animals and powerful magical abilities. Maria, despite her age, is determined to help Richter and avenge her family. Players have the option to rescue Maria early in the game, which unlocks her as a playable character. Her unique abilities, such as her double jump and animal-based attacks, offer a significantly different gameplay experience compared to Richter's whip-focused combat.
To unlock Maria:
- In Stage 2: The Haunted Graveyard, proceed until you reach the area with the large, crumbling bridge.
- Instead of crossing the bridge, drop down into the pit below.
- Navigate through the hidden passage filled with Bone Pillars and Flea Men.
- You will eventually reach a room where Maria is being held captive by a Minotaur. Defeat the Minotaur to free her.
Rescuing Maria is crucial for experiencing the full story and for players who prefer a faster, more agile character. Her presence also adds depth to the narrative, as she actively participates in the fight against Dracula's forces.
The Captives and Their Significance
The four abducted women serve as key objectives throughout Richter's journey. Each rescue not only progresses the narrative but can also provide hints or aid in Richter's quest.
- Annette: Richter's beloved. Her rescue is the ultimate personal goal for Richter, and her fate is tied to the game's ending.
- Maria Renard: Annette's younger sister and a powerful magic-user. Rescuing her unlocks her as a playable character.
- Tera: A nun from the village. She can be found in a hidden area of the castle.
- Iris: The mayor's daughter. Her rescue is also tied to a specific hidden path.
The order in which you rescue these characters, and whether you rescue them at all, can influence the game's ending, particularly regarding Annette's fate. For the best ending, all captives must be rescued.
The Final Confrontation
Richter's journey culminates in a showdown with Dracula himself. The final battle takes place in the castle's highest chambers, where Dracula, empowered by the dark rituals of Shaft, awaits. The outcome of this battle will determine the fate of the Belmont lineage and the world.
The lore of Rondo of Blood also sets the stage for future Castlevania titles, most notably Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, where Richter's story takes an unexpected turn. Understanding the events and character motivations in Rondo of Blood provides crucial context for the broader Castlevania universe.
