Boss: Death (Stage 4)
Death, Dracula's grim reaper and most loyal lieutenant, stands as a formidable barrier in Stage 4. This encounter is a true test of your mastery over movement, sub-weapon management, and pattern recognition. While Death's core attack patterns remain consistent across both Richter Belmont and Maria Renard, the strategies for each character differ significantly due to their unique abilities and sub-weapon arsenals.
Before entering the boss chamber, ensure you are adequately prepared. For Richter, the Cross sub-weapon is overwhelmingly effective. For Maria, the Dragon or Turtle sub-weapons can be highly beneficial. Stock up on hearts, as Item Crashes will be crucial for burst damage and clearing the screen of smaller scythes.
Death's Attack Patterns
Death employs a terrifying array of scythe-based attacks. Understanding and predicting these patterns is key to survival:
- Scythe Toss: Death throws his large scythe horizontally across the screen. This is usually followed by him teleporting to the opposite side. The scythe travels at a moderate speed and can be ducked under or jumped over.
- Homing Scythes: Death summons several smaller, spectral scythes that slowly home in on your position. These are a nuisance and can quickly overwhelm you if not dealt with.
- Giant Scythe Sweep (Phase 2): Once Death takes significant damage (approximately 50% health), he will introduce a devastating new attack. He summons a massive scythe that sweeps across the entire screen, either from top to bottom or bottom to top. This attack is telegraphed by Death raising his hands.
- Teleportation: Death frequently teleports around the arena, often after an attack or to reposition himself. This makes landing consistent hits challenging.
Strategy: Richter Belmont
Richter's fight against Death is heavily reliant on precise movement and optimal sub-weapon usage, particularly the Cross.
Recommended Loadout:
- Primary Weapon: Vampire Killer (standard whip)
- Sub-Weapon: Cross (essential)
- Item Crash: Grand Cross (requires 20 hearts)
Step-by-Step Strategy:
- Opening: As the fight begins, Death will typically teleport to one side and throw his scythe. Immediately jump over or duck under it.
- Cross Spam: The Cross sub-weapon is your best friend. When Death is on screen, throw crosses continuously. The Cross travels a short distance, hits multiple times on its return, and can even hit Death as he teleports away or arrives. Its multi-hit property makes it incredibly efficient against Death's large hitbox.
- Dealing with Homing Scythes:
- If you have ample hearts, use your Grand Cross Item Crash. This will clear all small scythes on screen and deal massive damage to Death.
- Alternatively, use your whip to destroy them. Prioritize destroying the ones closest to you.
- Dodging the Giant Scythe (Phase 2):
- Top-to-Bottom Sweep: When Death summons the giant scythe from the top, position yourself at the very edge of the screen (either left or right) and duck. The scythe will pass over you.
- Bottom-to-Top Sweep: When the scythe comes from the bottom, you must jump over it. A well-timed double jump can give you extra air time if needed. Be mindful of Death's position after this attack, as he might teleport.
- Aggression and Patience: Be aggressive with your Cross throws, but don't rush into Death. His teleportation can lead you into his scythe attacks. Maintain a safe distance, throw crosses, and react to his movements.
- Item Crash Usage: Save your Item Crash (Grand Cross) for when Death is vulnerable and you need to clear the screen of homing scythes, or to deliver a final burst of damage. It's especially useful in Phase 2 when the screen can get chaotic.
Strategy: Maria Renard
Maria's agility and unique sub-weapons offer a different approach to the Death encounter. Her double jump and slide are invaluable for evasion.
Recommended Loadout:
- Primary Weapon: Dove attacks (standard)
- Sub-Weapon: Dragon (for sustained damage) or Turtle (for defense/stunning)
- Item Crash: Divine Wrath (requires 20 hearts)
Step-by-Step Strategy:
- Opening: Similar to Richter, dodge Death's initial scythe toss.
- Dragon Strategy:
- Summon the Dragon and let it attack Death. The Dragon's fireballs deal consistent damage, allowing you to focus more on dodging.
- Keep the Dragon active as much as possible.
- Turtle Strategy (Alternative):
- The Turtle sub-weapon can create a temporary shield that blocks projectiles, including the smaller homing scythes. It can also stun Death briefly if he touches it.
- Use the Turtle defensively to create openings or protect yourself from the homing scythes.
- Maria's Attacks: While your sub-weapons are doing work, use Maria's regular dove attacks. Her charged dove attack (holding the attack button) can deal significant damage.
- Dealing with Homing Scythes:
- Maria's double jump and slide are excellent for dodging these.
- Her Item Crash, Divine Wrath, is incredibly effective at clearing the screen of all projectiles and dealing heavy damage to Death. Use it when overwhelmed.
- Dodging the Giant Scythe (Phase 2):
- Top-to-Bottom Sweep: Duck at the edge of the screen.
- Bottom-to-Top Sweep: Use Maria's double jump to gain enough height to clear the scythe. Her higher jump makes this slightly easier than Richter.
- Agility is Key: Maria's speed and double jump allow for more flexible evasion. Use these to your advantage to stay out of harm's way while your sub-weapons or charged attacks chip away at Death's health.
Common Pitfalls & Tips:
- Heart Management: Don't be stingy with hearts if you have a powerful sub-weapon. Item Crashes can turn the tide of the battle.
- Patience: Death's fight is a marathon, not a sprint. Don't get frustrated if you take damage. Focus on learning his patterns.
- Sub-Weapon Priority: Always prioritize picking up the recommended sub-weapon if you lose it.
- Health Management: If you're low on health, consider using a healing item if you have one, but be aware of the animation time.
- Know Your Character: Understand the strengths and weaknesses of Richter and Maria. Richter excels with the Cross, Maria with her agility and unique sub-weapons.
Defeating Death in Stage 4 is a significant accomplishment, marking your progress towards Dracula's Castle. Master these strategies, and the Grim Reaper will fall before you.
