Boss: Death (Inverted Castle)
Death, Dracula's loyal servant, awaits you in the Inverted Castle's Anti-Chapel. This battle is a significant challenge, testing your mastery of Alucard's abilities and equipment. Come prepared!
Recommended Equipment & Preparation
- Weapon: The Crissaegrim (dropped by Schmoos in the Forbidden Library) is overwhelmingly powerful for this fight due to its multi-hit, rapid-fire nature. If you don't have it, the Valmanway (dropped by Lesser Demons in the Reverse Caverns) is an excellent alternative. Failing that, a strong sword like the Mourneblade or Alucard Sword will suffice, but the fight will be tougher.
- Shield: The Alucard Shield (found in the Reverse Caverns) combined with the Shield Rod (found in the Olrox's Quarters) creates the incredibly potent Alucard Shield spell. This is highly recommended for massive damage output.
- Armor: Equip the best defensive gear you have. The Dracula Tunic (dropped by Dracula in the Inverted Castle Keep) or Alucard Mail (found in the Reverse Caverns) are top choices.
- Accessory: The Duplicator (purchased from the Master Librarian after obtaining the Gold Ring and Silver Ring) is invaluable for spamming healing items and powerful sub-weapons. If you don't have it, equip the Necklace of J (dropped by the Galamoth) for defense or a Chaos Ring for MP regeneration.
- Sub-Weapon: The Cross is excellent for its screen-clearing ability, especially during Death's second phase. The Holy Water can also be effective if you can position it well.
- Consumables: Stock up on Potions, High Potions, and Elixirs. If you have the Duplicator, bring a few Attack Potions and Shield Potions to boost your stats.
Battle Strategy
Phase 1: Death's Scythes
Death begins by summoning a large, spinning scythe and several smaller, homing scythes. Your primary goal here is to deal as much damage as possible while avoiding his attacks.
- Initial Assault: As soon as the fight begins, activate the Alucard Shield spell (Shield Rod + Alucard Shield). This will consume 30 MP but deals continuous, high damage to Death as long as he's within range.
- Dodge the Scythes:
- The large spinning scythe moves in predictable patterns. Watch its trajectory and use Alucard's backdash or double jump to avoid it.
- The smaller homing scythes are more troublesome. They track your movement. Try to lure them together and then quickly move away. If you have the Cross sub-weapon, a well-timed throw can clear them out.
- Maintain Offense: Continue attacking with your chosen weapon. If using the Crissaegrim, simply stand close and unleash a barrage. If using the Alucard Shield spell, try to stay near Death, but prioritize avoiding damage.
- Healing: Don't hesitate to use Potions if your health drops significantly. If you have the Duplicator, you can spam them without worry.
Phase 2: Death's True Form
Once you've dealt enough damage, Death will transform, revealing a more skeletal, menacing form. He will gain new, more aggressive attacks.
- Soul Steal: Death will attempt to steal your soul, which drains a significant amount of health. This attack has a slight wind-up animation. When you see him preparing it, immediately backdash or double jump away to avoid the grab.
- Bone Pillars: He will summon bone pillars from the ground. These are relatively easy to avoid by staying airborne or moving between them.
- Scythe Barrage: Death will throw multiple scythes in various patterns. These can be tricky to dodge. Again, your backdash is your best friend here. If you have the Cross sub-weapon and Duplicator, you can continuously throw Crosses to clear the screen and damage Death simultaneously.
- Aggressive Offense: This phase is about maintaining aggression while carefully dodging. If you still have MP, reactivate the Alucard Shield spell for continuous damage. Otherwise, rely on your main weapon. The Crissaegrim shines here, allowing you to attack while focusing on movement.
- Prioritize Survival: Death's attacks hit hard in this phase. Do not be afraid to use your healing items liberally, especially if you have the Duplicator.
With persistence and careful dodging, Death will eventually fall, clearing your path to the next challenges of the Inverted Castle.
