Boss: Lesser Demon
The Lesser Demon is one of the more straightforward early-game bosses, primarily relying on melee attacks and a single projectile. Your goal is to exploit its predictable patterns and relatively low HP.
Preparation
- Weapons: Any strong sword you've acquired is suitable. The Broadsword or Scimitar found in the Outer Wall are excellent choices for this stage of the game.
- Armor: Equip the best defense you have. The Leather Shield (if you found it) can block some of its attacks, though dodging is generally more effective.
- Sub-Weapon: The Axe is highly recommended for its arc, allowing you to hit the Lesser Demon even when it's slightly above you. The Cross can also be effective if you have good timing.
- Healing Items: Bring a few Potions or High Potions if you're concerned about taking damage. You can find Potions dropped by various enemies in the Marble Gallery or purchase them from the Master Librarian.
Location
The Lesser Demon is encountered in the Marble Gallery, specifically in a large, open chamber located to the right of the Warp Room and directly above the room where you likely fought the Warg. You'll know you're approaching when you see the boss door.
Battle Strategy
The Lesser Demon has a simple attack pattern that makes it easy to predict and counter.
Phase 1: Melee and Fireball
- Initial Engagement: As soon as the fight begins, the Lesser Demon will likely charge at you. Be ready to jump over it or slide under it to get behind it.
- Melee Combo: Its primary attack is a three-hit claw combo. These attacks are telegraphed, and you can usually jump over the first two and then slide under the third, or simply backdash away.
- Fireball Projectile: After a few melee attacks, or if you maintain distance, the Lesser Demon will occasionally stop and cast a slow-moving fireball. This fireball travels in a straight line and is easily dodged by jumping or ducking.
- Attack Windows:
- After it completes its three-hit melee combo, there's a brief recovery period where you can get a few hits in.
- When it's casting its fireball, it's stationary and vulnerable. This is an excellent opportunity to unleash your attacks.
- If you have the Axe sub-weapon, throw it when the Lesser Demon is jumping or slightly above you to catch it in the arc.
- Stay Mobile: Continuously move around the arena. Don't get cornered. Use Alucard's backdash (L1 or R1) to quickly reposition yourself.
Advanced Tactics
- Sub-Weapon Spam: If you have a good supply of Hearts, continuously throwing Axes or Crosses can make this fight trivial, especially if you aim for its head.
- Shield Usage: While not essential, if you have the Leather Shield equipped, you can block the fireball projectile, though it's often more efficient to dodge and counter-attack.
- Magic: If you've unlocked any early magic spells, such as Hellfire (Down, Down-Forward, Forward + Attack), they can deal significant damage, but conserve your MP for later if you're low.
Post-Battle Reward
Upon defeating the Lesser Demon, you will receive a significant amount of experience points. More importantly, the path forward will open, allowing you to progress deeper into the Marble Gallery and eventually reach the Long Library.
