Boss: Medusa
The Medusa boss fight is encountered early in your adventure, typically after acquiring the Soul of Bat relic. She guards the passage to the Olrox's Quarters and can be a tricky encounter if you're not prepared. Her primary threat comes from her ability to petrify Alucard, leaving him vulnerable to follow-up attacks.
Recommended Preparation
- Level: Aim for at least Level 10-12. While possible at lower levels, higher stats make the fight significantly more manageable.
- Equipment:
- Weapon: A fast-hitting weapon like the Short Sword or Combat Knife is ideal for consistent damage. If you've found the Alucard Sword in the Alchemy Laboratory (requires the Leap Stone to reach), it's an excellent choice.
- Armor: Equip the best defensive gear you have. The Leather Plate or Bronze Cuirass are good options if you've explored enough.
- Accessory: The Medal (found in the Outer Wall) offers a slight defense boost. More importantly, consider equipping a Stone Mask or Mystic Pendant if you have them, as they offer resistance to petrification.
- Sub-Weapon: The Axe is highly effective against Medusa due to its arcing trajectory, allowing you to hit her even when she's slightly above you. The Cross can also be useful for its wide area of effect.
- Consumables: Bring a few Potions or High Potions for emergency healing. A Uncurse potion might be useful if you get petrified and need to break free quickly, though avoiding the attack is preferable.
Medusa's Attacks and How to Counter Them
Medusa has a limited but dangerous set of attacks:
- Gaze Attack (Petrification): Medusa will periodically stop moving and emit a green gaze from her eyes. If Alucard is caught in this gaze, he will be petrified, turning to stone and becoming immobile.
- Counter: This is her most dangerous attack. As soon as you see her stop and prepare the gaze, immediately jump over her or use your Backdash to get behind her. If you have the Soul of Bat, transforming into a bat and flying above her is the safest evasion. If petrified, rapidly mash directional buttons and attack to break free.
- Snake Hair Attack: Medusa's snake hair will lash out, dealing moderate physical damage. This usually happens when Alucard is close to her.
- Counter: This attack is less frequent and easier to avoid. Stay slightly out of melee range when not attacking, or simply jump over her as she approaches.
Battle Strategy
The key to defeating Medusa lies in aggressive, well-timed attacks and consistent evasion of her petrifying gaze.
- Initial Engagement: As the fight begins, Medusa will typically float towards you. Get in a few quick hits with your primary weapon.
- Prioritize Evasion: Your absolute top priority is to avoid her petrifying gaze. Watch her movements carefully. The moment she pauses and her eyes begin to glow green, react immediately.
- Without Soul of Bat: Jump over her or use Backdash to get behind her. You can often get a few hits in from behind while she's still gazing.
- With Soul of Bat: Transform into a bat (Up, Up-Left, Left, Left-Down, Down, Down-Right, Right + Jump/Attack) and fly directly over her head. This is the safest method.
- Offensive Windows:
- After she completes a gaze attack, she'll be vulnerable for a short period as she resumes her normal movement. This is your primary window for attack.
- If you manage to get behind her during a gaze, you can land several hits before she turns around.
- Use your Axe sub-weapon when she's slightly above you or moving away, as its arc can still connect.
- Maintain Distance (Mostly): While you want to be aggressive, don't linger too close for too long, especially if you're not actively attacking. Give yourself room to react to her gaze.
- Repeat and Conquer: Continue this pattern of attacking during her vulnerable moments and strictly avoiding her gaze. Medusa has a moderate amount of HP, so persistence is key.
Post-Fight Rewards
Upon defeating Medusa, she will drop a significant amount of EXP and often a valuable item. You will also gain access to the next area, Olrox's Quarters, allowing you to progress further into Dracula's Castle.
