Shaft — Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Guide
Shaft, the dark priest and orchestrator of Richter Belmont's corruption, stands as a sificant obstacle before the final confrontation. This boss fight requires Alucard to navigate a treacherous arena while dealing with Shaft's magical assaults and the possessed Richter. Master this encounter to progress towards the true ending.
Shaft is encountered in the Clock Tower, acting as a gatekeeper to the final stages of the castle. He is not a direct combatant in the traditional sense; instead, he manipulates the possessed Richter Belmont to fight Alucard. The arena is a large, open space with platforms, and the fight is a multi-phase encounter.
Phase 1: Shaft's Influence
In the initial phase, you will be fighting a possessed Richter Belmont. He uses his sature whip attacks and sub-weapons. Shaft himself remains in the background, occasionally casting spells or taunting Alucard.
- Richter's Attacks: Richter wields his whip with incredible speed and range. He can perform rapid combos, throw daggers, and use his super jump attack.
- Shaft's Interference: Shaft will periodically cast dark magic, such as summoning spectral enemies or creating damaging zones on the floor.
Strategies for Phase 1
The goal here is to survive Richter's onslaught while chipping away at his health. Shaft is invulnerable during this phase.
- Dodging Richter: Richter's attacks are fast but predictable. Learn his patterns and use Alucard's backdash and jump to evade. The Shield Rod with a strong shield can block some of his attacks, but it's generally better to dodge.
- Sub-Weapon Usage: The Cross sub-weapon is excellent for dealing damage to Richter from a distance, especially when he's on the ground. The Axe can also be effective if timed well.
- Familiar Support: If you have a strong familiar like the Sword Familiar or the Bat Familiar, they can contribute sificant damage while you focus on evasion.
- Patience is Key: This phase is about endurance. Don't get greedy; focus on staying alive and landing hits when safe.
Phase 2: Shaft's True Form (Sort Of)
Once Richter's health is depleted, he will collapse, and Shaft will reveal his true intentions. He will attempt to fully drain Alucard's power. This phase is more about survival and reaching the objective.
- Shaft's Attacks: Shaft will now directly attack Alucard with dark energy blasts and summon spectral figures. He also attempts to drain Alucard's life force.
- The Objective: Your goal is not to defeat Shaft directly in this phase. Instead, you need to reach the Holy Glasses that Maria drops after the fight and equip them. This is crucial for the next part of the game.
Strategies for Phase 2
This phase is less about combat and more about evasion and reaching the objective.
- Evade and Survive: Focus on dodging Shaft's attacks. His energy blasts can be dodged with well-timed jumps and backdashes.
- Retrieve the Holy Glasses: After a short cutscene, Maria will drop the Holy Glasses. Immediately move to pick them up.
- Equip the Holy Glasses: Once you have the Holy Glasses, equip them. This is essential for seeing through Shaft's illusions and eventually confronting the true final boss.
Recommended Gear
For the fight against Richter, high defense is beneficial. Any armor that increases your attack power or provides resistance to physical attacks will help. For Shaft's direct assault, focus on evasion. Accessories that boost your Luck can increase the drop rate of useful items from Richter.
Successfully navigating the Shaft encounter and obtaining the Holy Glasses is a critical step in Symphony of the Night, paving the way for the game's ultimate conclusion.
